Rallies Mark Iraq War Anniversary
BBC

Saturday 20 March 2004

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Australia, beginning a day of protests around the world to mark the first anniversary of the Iraq war.

Rallies are expected later in Britain, Italy and Spain - whose governments supported the US-led invasion of Iraq.

More than 250 demonstrations are being organised across the United States.

Speaking on the eve of the anniversary, US President George W Bush described the war on terror as "an inescapable calling of our
generation".

Several thousand Australians took part in rallies across the country, addressed by community and church leaders.

They planned to bring down a fake statue of Prime Minister John Howard - mocking the toppling last year of the statue of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

8. HeyHey!
I'm going to the one in Edmonton. Last year in February and March we had the largest turnouts for any protest ever held in the city's history - 12,000 and 18,000! We even had more people attend than Calgary did, LOL.

I'm sure we'll all be out there again, and will perhaps drag along a few more participants this year.

Edmonton is a liberal haven in this god-forsaken conservative province!

Will report back on it tomorrow.

7. Knowing we are part of something so much bigger...
than just ourselves feels so amazing. I'm gonna sleep sweet tonight knowing that our brothers and sisters already have the ball rolling. And when I wake up it'll be our turn.

11. Tomorrow 12:30 MST
ALBUQUERQUE!

The Taos group (Rummy has 4 houses not in but near) changed their venue from the main Plaza to nearby because a State repgu senator said there would be violence. The protest committee issued a very nice letter of protest. Was on our local NPR KUNM.
