All I'm saying is at the concert he didn't seem to give ex-gay views. What else has he said?

10. well, he was talking about child molesters specifically, not gays per se... |
|
McClurkin was molested as a child, and is apparently struggling with it.

11. No, he's not. He's replying to the protests of the gay community. McClurkin believes |
|
that homosexuality and child molestation are the same paradigm.
"I was sexually abused and raped by this uncle, and it caused great hurt and confusion in my life for many years to follow... a seed had been planted--a seed of homosexuality...but it wasn't long before I discovered that there were many more in the church with these problems who wanted to be free but had to remain silent because this was a taboo issue. They came to church week after week, looking and yearning for deliverance from this desire. They, like myself, were thrust into this before they had a choice in the matter by someone who took advantage of them...They were thrust into homosexuality by neglect, abuse and molestation...there are many more things that need to be done to break the curse of homosexuality. "

14. yes, he believes that his molestation affected the course of his sexual development... |
|
And yes, he obviously surmises that there are others like him. But please note that he doesn't say that gay = child molester.
Look, McClurkin is/was gay himself. He knows that being gay is not the same thing as wanting to sexually abuse children!

17. wouldn't the "pedophiles" in his fevered imagination be the teachers? |
|
Remember -- we're talking about a guy whose molestation is the lense through which he views the world.

18. Even if it were, it would seem rather homophobic to assume the teachers at the school were... |
|
pedophiles. To be honest, I don't understand why you defend him, he's a sick son of a bitch who is using a childhood trauma to further his own homophobic ends. There is nothing admirable about that.

I don't claim to be an expert on McClurkin, by the way. To me, he's just some gospel singer I'd hadn't even heard of until recently.

8. "We don't believe in discrimination" -- that's what splits evangelical Dems from evangelical GOPers |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 11:35 AM by NorthernSpy
And that's the critical element that got lost in the McClurkin flap. I've tried repeatedly to get this point across, to no avail.
Evangelicals can be split, and this fact is to our advantage. Some of them go to the religious hard right. They're the ones who oppose anti-discrimination laws, and who want to change the Constitution to reflect their views of marriage.
Evangelicals like McClurkin tend to favor broad-based anti-discrimination laws, even to protect those whose lifestyle their religion would deem sinful, and they are especially leery of any kind of statute that would limit protection under law. We progressives gain absolutely nothing by getting in a snit and pushing these people away just because they can't rewrite their Bible.

9. McClurkin wanted the Harvey Milk school for GLBT teens closed... |
|
so he's apparently against discrimination, but not against harassment. I don't see what is gained by coddling to homophobes, regardless of what they use to justify their hatred, its still wrong.

by a right wing evangelical, born again, christian coalition type? And he tried to use the "twinky defense" to get out of it. Does anyone remember that?
