How low will Hillary's camp go?
TRULY SHAMEFUL | They say they had nothing to do with distributing photo -- but I don't buy it

February 26, 2008
BY MARY MITCHELL marym@suntimes.com

Why would a 2006 photograph of Sen. Barack Obama wearing African tribal garments suddenly show up on the Internet?

Think about it.

What is the point of circulating a photograph of Obama wearing a white turban days before critical primaries, if not to inflame an anti-Muslim sentiment?

snip//

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who ran for the Democratic Primary in 1984 and 1988, cautioned that Obama's camp can't succumb to the temptation of responding to these negative attacks.

"Sometimes a champion has to play with pain and choose to get ahead rather than to get even," he said.

Having lost her tight grip on college-educated, middle-class, white and black voters, and with Obama racking up endorsements from several large labor unions, Clinton is desperate to hold on to working-class and blue collar workers.

There is obviously a belief that the sight of Obama's participation in a tribal ritual in Kenya will be enough to drive a lot of those voters into Clinton's camp.

That's truly shameful.

Because instead of bridging the divide, Clinton is counting on it.

12. It was in a nationaly distributed newspaper a few weeks ago. They distributed it.
And anyone with google/images and some spare time can find silly pics of the candidates.
Hillary making faces, looking manic, wearing a witches hat - all "distributed" here on DU by Obama's surrogates.

9. I think it all depends on her showing in TX & OH next Tuesday.
IF she has a decent win in BOTH States, I think she'll stick around until Pa. If she loses or squeeks by in one or both States next Tuesday, my guess is that she'll bow out very soon thereafter.

I think everyone calling for Clinton to leave the race are wrong! Remember, no matter what she throws at Obama right now is EXTREMELY MILD compared to what the Pubs will throw out there! You got all excited about that pic yesterday! WHY? It's MUCH better to have it released NOW than it would have been to have the Pubs release it on October 29th!!!!

I was listening to Thom Hartmann yesterday, but he makes a lot of sense! Along with what I posted above, he said "If I were a Pub operative, I'd be quietly collecting damaging pictures, quotes, etc. on the Dem candidate, and save them for release in late October or very early November when there wouldn't be enough time for the candidate to completely refute them before the November voting! Think about that!!!!

11. The theme becomes all too transparent today with Tubbs-Jones stating over and
over that he is "dressed in his native garb". Knowing full well he is an American and he was over there in official capacity as a United States Senator. This is where they were going all along with it. Its NOT the picture.. its the intention they had when they put it out there. They WANTED to open up the discourse to get this False Meme out there. Tubbs sealed the deal today and was NOT called on it.

The relevant sentences:

"Let me say this: I, I, I have no shame or no problem in people looking at Barack Obama in his, ah native clothing, in, in, in the clothing, the clothing of his country."

"If we're supporting a woman or an African-American, we should be supporting their ability to wear the clothing of, of their nation."

Note: Barack Obama is not actually a native of Somalia. His nation is not Somalia. His country is not Somalia.

No. This is the wrong tactic. When the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth started airing those ads and smearing John Kerry's service in the Vietnam War, Kerry decided to take the high road and not respond. He got eaten alive.

Obama's approach is far better. Respond to the attacks. Put the record straight. Make sure the truth is on the airwaves as soon as possible after the smear comes out. But don't sink to their level. Call the opposition out on their sleazy tactics, but don't stoop to using smears. Don't waste too much time dealing with the smears - make sure you can get your own message out there.

Hey, she could always follow in Holy Joe Lieberman's footsteps.

Or she could act like a responsible Democrat, support Obama against McCain, and then help vote with a Dem Senate majority and pass reforms that Obama will sign. And we need a lot of reforming just to start to undo the damage the GOP has wrought.
