Obama Encourages Parents to Love their Children - Tweety Calls Him a Conservative
Okay.. I'm watching the 7 pm rerun, begrudgingly. I caught the end of the 5 pm broadcast and there was a snippet of Obama speaking off the cuff, telling parents to turn off the video games, feed their children (lol) and help them with their homework (paraphrased). Well, Tweety gets his face all scrunched up and has this furrowed brow, concerned look.. and tells Katrina V. that he sounds like he's pushing conservative themes. Katrina seems shocked. I was too ! Since when is encouraging parents to be responsible something the government is supposed to do? He ended the segment obviously quite concerned that Obama is, indeed, a conservative.

I may have missed something, but this is just odd, so I'm going to try to catch it again. Did anyone see this and find it odd?

I am of the opinion that the influx of savvy, young, new voters may be turning Tweety into the Fossil we know he has always been. He can't stay caught up. He is behind from every angle. Obama responds to an attack before Tweety has a chance to weigh in.. he is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Many of the frothing punditry are becoming irrelevant. By the time we have fully discussed, dissected and disarmed topics here on DU and in the blogosphere, the MSM is just catching up.

We may do more this time than change America. Stay tuned.. :-) :hi:

They cry, whine, take up space, you have to feed them, take them to school and cost a fortune. Should have stuck with the cat.

They criticized it first, then they praised it when their candidate did it.

I never crticized it, therefore I am not inconsistent in my thinking.

Obama supporters want it both ways - scream "TRIANGULATION BILL" - then do that very same thing.

It is. To Laugh.

18. This wasn't triangulating.
Triangulating is trying to play left against right, liberals against conservatives. That's not what Obama was doing.

What he said -- that parents have to act to fight childhood obesity and reduce the influence of video games -- is neither liberal nor conservative. It certainly doesn't pit one group against the other. His words are just plain old common sense.

infuriating. How dare he? I mean, really? Isn't it time, haven't the Bush boys proven beyond any sort of doubt, that conservatism as practiced in the US has absolutely nothing to do with personal responsibility?

Tweety isn't capable of nuanced thought. He wants everything is easy to digest soundbites, regardless of whether they make any real sense or not. Everything must be distilled to some very simplistic notion. Which he then spends the entire show flogging his guests with, interrupting them to sell his latest "brilliant" thought.

Ugh.

42. That's why mommy's a democrat and
daddy, too.

"Last November, I published a children's book called Why Mommy is a Democrat. As described on my website, the book "brings to life the core values of the Democratic party in ways that young children will easily understand," such as the Democratic principles of fairness, tolerance, peace, and concern for the well-being of others. It also contains a few satirical jabs at the Republican party and the Bush Administration, which are intended to be too subtle for young children to notice or understand.

This is a genuine grassroots effort. Why Mommy is a Democrat is self-published and 100% self-funded, and no political organization played any role in its creation. Its primary goal is to encourage Democratic parents to discuss their political beliefs with their children in an open, honest, and positive way. It also serves to remind adult Democrats what it means to be a Democrat, i.e., what our party truly stands for. Finally, the book is a fundraising tool, with at least 5% of the profits going to Democratic candidates and party organizations."

"Yes, we can." It's all a part of that. People can take things on themselves and by doing those things, they can help improve their own lives and the lives of others. Tweety and the commentators just don't get that it's still all a part of the same message he's been giving from the beginning.

47. Here's what I got on Re-Run, badly and sparsely transcribed:
It was truly disgusting and insulting to me as a parent and grandparent.

Obama in video clip: "Turn off the tv, put the video game away, watch them do their homework, help them, call their teacher if you don't know how to do it, make them go to bed at a reasonable time, keep them off the streets, give em some breakfast.. C'mon ! Can I get an Amen here?" Crowd goes wild.

Tweety: "Why that message of self reliance?"

Some other guy: "This is from the church of Obama. He was speaking to voters in suburbia."

Tweety: "Was he talking to whites or blacks ? Why would this tough love message sell between now and Tuesday?"

(rather disgusting discussion about whether low class whites or blacks would respond to this message)

Tweety: "This is an unusual message to unveil right before a primary. Not about a government program, but about self-help."

Katrina: "He speaks to the unfinished business of this country."

Tweety: "He's not saying the govt is on the way with help. He's telling the people to get their act together. Its what YOU GOTTA DO!

(Comparison to Bill Cosby. What is the public policy implication??)

Tweety: "I think he is saying to voters, more conservative dems, I share your bourgeois values. He's not pushing more government. I'm just asking about that part. I'm asking you to respond to that part.. its SELF HELP. (berating and interrupting katrina here) He's talking about what the people have to do for themselves, not what the government can do for them."

watched the stream from TX on CNN, and loved EVERY minute of it!!!! It's about time that someone told parents what they need to hear. I was curious after that if he was going to bring nutrition into the mix when the next question had to do with diabetes. He did. I thought it was great!

It's logical, true and refreshing. Not conservative. Keeping your kids off of the street, not blaming the teacher if they misbehave and having responsibility for them and their behavior is paramount. This was to me, the moment that I really, really got on the Obama train. Considering I got out my Master-card at this point, I'd say he scored big with this Mama of 4.

only PART of what he said, and it was NOT a conservative message, he just kept disagreeing with her. He gave Obama NO credit for ANYTHING-not even Obama's response to Hillary's scary ad, saying he doesn't understand why BOTH of them are using fear tactics. As if he didn't GET that Obama was RESPONDING to HER fear-card ad. Very strange comments by Matthews tonight! Not even ONE comment on how confident and relaxed Obama seemed in the speech.

horribly race-tinged and demeaning to huge segments of people. I'm hoping the transcript is up soon. He needs to be called on this crap.

By the tens of millions of voters who are voting Obama and turning this country around. No room for Tweety in THIS big House we're building, LOL.

66. It's called American Values.....
or did the conservatives think they monopolized that value?

68. This is easy to explain
First, parents loving their children and telling them to do their homework needs no encouragement from St. Obama -- he is stating the obvious and it is quite silly, really.

And since their is no real substantive message being put forth, it is then a simple matter of examining affect -- and this is no doubt what Matthews was driving at.

Republicans put forth just such drivel -- as if to say THEY alone posses those values. And there is your parallel. I've seen the commercial/spot -- Matthews makes the good observation here.

70. Gee......maybe if there is a debate as to what candidate has the
best parenting skills then all the voters need do is look at the remarkable Chelsea Clinton. Bill and Hillary would win hands down.....Obama and michelle have a lot of time left to raise their kids up proper, but for now The Clintons win the parents contest....
