Kerry needs to go on the Daily Show (and others) to get younger voters |
|
Apparently there was a poll that said Nader is doing much better among youths than other age groups. Dean also did well among this group. The main thing younger voters want is some entusiasm. Kerry is actually pretty funny at times, and it baffles me why he hasn't been on the Daily Show (or any other show other than Leno a while back). Many college age students get their new from that (and that's a good thing considering it's more real than anything coming from Fox).
It's true that this age group isn't very consistent regarding voting but Kerry can and probably beat Bush here, but I think he can do a better job loosening up.

1. voters who base it on leno letterman are swing voters, not young voters |
|
younger voters tend to be more into the issues. and kerry already has his own GOTV effort for younger voters.

2. Swing voters will often vote for the more "likable" candidate, |
|
and appearances on these talk shows can help to establish him as the more personable candidate.
I wish a candidate could run just on issues and win on that, but those damn swing voters...

is true in many cases, but I also think that seeing Kerry on these shows will (hopefully) leave them with a positive impression causing them to want to go research his stance on the issues.
So, I think that it can help either 1) pique their interest causing them to want to learn more about Kerry or 2) sway some apolitical young voters who may go more on gut feeling than issues...
In any case, I think it can only help. :)

and perhaps also Franken's show. I don't know about Howard's.
Howard's show has a bad rep that the Bushistas can use against Kerry.
MTV is good too. :P

6. he can get his kids or brother to go on stern's show |
|
that's what happened when bill clinton ran. bill clinton's brothe roger often talked with or went on stern's show. and there are other democrats from more liberal areas who go on stern's show or talk to him which can help kerry also.

70 - 80 percent of the people watching it are probably already going to vote for Kerry, and 95 percent are probably going to vote.
Kerry's higher priority among youths is getting the disengaged, or more acurately, a sliver of the disengaged. Generation Y(my generation) for the most part thinks politics and interest in it is uncool and uninteresting.
The only thing that would get their attention is for Kerry to gueststar on the OC or Newlyweds.
Although Kerry should not try to pretend what he's not(a regular guy of regular beginnings) he should go about trying to increase his relatability in any event. I think he should show less of the windsurfing and more of the casual stuff. He should play up being a redsox fan the same way Giuliani does being a Yankees fan. He should also hold town meetings at highschools in important metros(Miami, Phoenix, Pittsburg) and make sure his people contrast that with Bush's shutting out of the public
