17. The point will have to wait until tomorrow...exhausted here but |
|
in the meantime, discuss your thoughts about all the money spent to obtain a $400,000 a year job...
Why, besides power would anyone or any group of people want to spend so much for a job that pays little in comparison? How much money did Halliburton make from all the no bid contracts? How much money has been spent on the war? Where did the money go? Do you think some candidates just run in order to have the left over campaign money? Do they keep it? How would they hide money they were given by lobbyists? If you were President and you wanted to take money for political favors, what types of things could you do so it would be under the radar (for the most part)? If you were given money lets say from insurance companies what could you do to repay them? What motivation would there be besides the power to become President? Yes, we are considered the ethical party, that should be running to make our country better for our people. While some candidates are ethical, others are not. Also, how many programs could be funded with the money spent on elections?
Do you think the largest problems with our process are:
Lobbyists in general Oil companies? Insurance Companies? Drug Companies? Weapons Manufacturers? Defense Contractors? Large Corporations?

It is the reason Edwards, Kucinich and others don't stand a chance. Public financing of elections is long over due.

Only one person can be President, limited supply. The demand for it is not based at all on the salary. The salary could be 50k a year and the demand would still be as high. The perceived utility of the Presidency is based on the authority it has, which is greater than any other position in the world. Even if you wanted to put a monetary value on it, you would have to take into account on the perks of the job like travel, as well of the post-Presidency lobbying advantages. So long as someone else is willing to spend more to win it, one will have to match the spending or risk losing the election.
