Let's face it: the FL / MI situation is an absolute fiasco |
|
There's not a "right" solution as things stand: there is no way to go forward that avoids pissing off a large number of people.
Seat the delegates? Hmm... seating Michigan is a non-starter: there was one name on the ballot. Florida, well, that's a starter, but seating that is going to piss off Obama supporters (and they're not wrong to be pissed off about the idea). Having a caucus is going to piss off Clinton supporters (and they're not wrong to be pissed off about that idea, either). Re-doing the primaries is going to piss off people in the state because it will cost them a metric shitload of money.
People talk like "well obviously this solution is best", but no solution is obviously best. It's various degrees and directions of suckage. Lots and lots of people are to blame here.
I hope, I really really hope, that this will stir the party to stop kowtowing to New Hampshire and Iowa.

1. Least painful/cheapest solution: re-do MI as caucus, seat FL as is. nt |

18. At least that way both HC and BO would have been on the ballot. I said it was the minimalist |

3. They could imitate the Republicans |
|
and only seat 50 percent of the Florida delegates. Not ideal, but nothing is.
Not fair to Obama, considering H's high name recognition at a time when Obama was less known than now. But better than giving her the whole 50 percent of 100 percent.

You can fit the population of those two states in the Miami-Ft.Lauderale metropolitan area...

The DNC thought they could assert their authority, and that MI and FL wouldn't really matter in determining the nomination. They were wrong.
Now it needs to be fixed.

6. Dean has the authority to reapportion Floridas delegates |
|
He could split Florida 50/50, and Michigan could caucus to get a fair representation.
If I was Dean that would be my only solution, telling the two states (Mi has already approved a caucus I beleve) to take it or leave your delegates unseated.
Any doubts that that plan wouldnt be acceptable to Clinton?
Again, if I was Dean I would tell her tough shit, live with it.

The votes and delegates need to be counted, you can't count out two completely American states yet count Puerto Rico. Very Un-American. Yes they broke the rules but they didn't think things would turn out the way they have at this point. The states violated rules and that is not the fault of neither the candidates or the voters and they should not be held accountable for stupid decisions. The race has come down to such a tight situation that it validates those states being re-evaluated because they could make an impact. The Republicans did their part by only counting half of the delegates, but it's all water under the bridge for them since they had a run-away candidate. With the Dem race in the state that it is in, you cannot just erase two states from choosing the candidate because officials decided on their own that it was a good idea to make up their own rules with the primary dates. It violates the rights of the people and the fairness to the candidates. I lived in Florida for two years. I have family there. If I still lived there, I would be LIVID and would be clamoring myself to the idiots who decided it would be a fun idea to move up the primary to either re-do the primary or work something out to get our votes counted. Figure it out Dean, git 'er done.

8. Why should Dean git 'er done? |
|
FL was warned they were breaking rules and all but told National to kiss off. Dean told them if it passed and the FL Dems voted against it then he would try to work something out. I might be remembering wrong but wasn't there only 1 Dem in FL that voted no to moving up the primary? I say let them have another primary and let the FL State Dems pay for it. They KNEW they were breaking rules and were told what the cost was.
I also lived in FL for a couple decades and I also have family still there and they are livid, but not at national, at the FL Dems that brought this on themselves. Still have quite a few friends there that feel the same. FL got greedy like a lot of other states and wanted to be relevant with an early vote and screwed everyone in the state that cared about this election.

9. I think that both states should just do mail in ballots for the registered Dems. |
|
It seems like it would be the cheapest way to go.
We need those states in the GE. Especially Florida - it seems like they really got screwed over by their governor. Now his mug is all over the news, he must be hearing it from his constituents.

NO ONE is to blame other than Hillary. This pisses me off to no end and though only months ago I admired both candidates, I will now NEVER vote for a candidate so blatantly Rovian. If she had one SHRED of integrity, she would not be creating this nightmare. Those states were FAIRLY given the rules JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER STATE and THEY CHOSE to break them! Therefore they MUST pay the consequences!
It really is as simple as that. If you were playing football, would you suddenly decide that the other team was unfair because they tackled you? FUCK NO YOU WOULDN'T, NOT IF YOU WERE SANE! If you were a judge in a court of law, would you sentence someone to life in prison for a minor traffic ticket? FUCK NO YOU WOULDN'T, NOT IF YOU WERE SANE! Who needs sexism when Hillary is living out the ridiculous negative stereotype of the power mad woman by applying unfair double standards and breaking the rules SHE HERSELF AGREED TO?
She is just demonstrating to the world once and for all what an arrogant, Machiavellian asshole she really is.

14. The most short sided failure of the party ever. FL Rethugs moved the primary up |
|
and the Dem's couldn't do anything about it. They tried to get Dean to help them, work it out somehow, and he failed to do it.
No matter how much you feel FL was at fault, this is an enormous failure of Dean.
Now, we all pay for it.

15. Errr.. A FL Democrat introduced the bill... |
|
...and the Democratic delegation to the state legislature voted overwhelmingly for it.
Dean offered to have the DNC pay for a later caucus, and the Florida Democratic party said no.
Pointing one finger here is really simplifying things.

17. Is kow-towing to FL / MI the solution? |
|
The states knew the rules.
The states ignored them.
(cue florida complaint)
Well, if florida was actually a (D) state, that wouldn't have been a problem, now, would it?
Give each state two weeks to do their thing, paid for by the party in each state, and it's done.
