Gay supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said they believe strong backing from gay voters in Texas and Ohio contributed to her primary victories in both states on Tuesday, helping to lift her campaign from near collapse and giving her a fighting chance of winning her party’s nomination.

Supporters of rival presidential hopeful Barack Obama challenged that assessment, saying the gay vote appears to have split evenly between the two candidates in both states, while acknowledging that Clinton received endorsements from more high-profile gay leaders in Texas and Ohio than Obama.

Clinton received endorsements from the Stonewall Democrats gay political clubs in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Sue Lovell, the openly lesbian member of Houston City Council, and Annise Parker, the open lesbian who recently won election as Houston’s city auditor, endorsed Clinton.

But the Houston GLBT Political Caucus, the city’s largest and oldest gay political group, endorsed Obama. The endorsement came after both Obama and Clinton agreed to comply with the group’s stringent rules, which require all candidates seeking an endorsement to return a signed questionnaire answering gay rights questions and meet or speak directly with the organization’s board.

1. The gay people I know

...seem to be primarily for Hillary with the exception of the younger men who are able to overlook the obama ick factor and buy the hope juice.
Older gay men seem to just like Hillary.
That's just my acquaintances. Not generalizations.
Personally I have way more hope and faith in Hillary as doing and trying to do the right thing.
I am not at all convinced that "our time" includes older women, older people, gays and lesbians in the pronoun "our".

But for sure Obama will get my support if he wins the nomination.

2. I am gay and work actively in the gay community

I work as a gay nightclub performer at warehouse 29. www.w29.com and have my own variety show that travels between clubs www.myspace.com/thedavidbryantvarietyshow as a result I interact with a LOT of gay people. I have yet to come across anyone who is supporting Obama. Not to say he doesn't have those supporters, just to state that they are probably few and far between OR they may be less vocal about it in the gay community. I talk about politics a lot... but am baised because people I associate with are more likely to agree with my points of view.

I would be very interested to see a national poll on the attitudes of gay individuals in our culture.

Yea, most of the people I know are not supporting Obama.

And the few that are, don't have a problem with the McClurkin fiasco.

They're very timid folks who allow homophobes to stomp all over them, instead of speaking out. It's tragic. That's why I talk about self esteem issues, which unfortunately, make some gay people around here go ballistic.

BTW, for the record, some of the people I know who aren't voting for Obama don't necessarily like Hillary a lot either.

They like Kucinich. (I do too).

I ended up voting for Edwards in the California Primary.

4. You know what's interesting is that I donated money to Edwards and

and am now supporting Hillary. I always supported Hillary AND Edwards both. Now I only have one person left in the race. I personally do not hate Obama. Kucinich would be nice as well, though I do realize he is more of a pipe dream. I care a lot about health care, and I feel like Edwards and Hillary are on the right side of that.

McClurkin is a deal for me. But you know what? I WOULD be okay for the most part if he'd just apologize... none of this apology in advance stuff that he put out, but a real apology after the fact. I worry that Barack doesn't really MEAN it when he talks about gay rights, and civil unions (though I would prefer gay marriage). I also had worries, though I like Edwards a LOT, that Edwards didn't really "mean" it either. I think he wife did. I felt like Elizabeth was very in tune with the needs of the gay community and that meant a lot to me. I still think Edwards is such a good candidate. I feel like Hillary means it as well. I know her husband inacted some laws that didn't turn out just right. Don't Ask Don't Tell wasn't what we wanted, but I feel like they WANTED to do better than Don't Ask Don't Tell but that was all they were able to actually get by with :( ... I believe Hillary when she says she is unsatisified with DADT and wants to change it. I think she also sees mistakes in the DOMA even if she can't admit how gross those mistakes are while on the campaign trail. I know it sounds weird, but I feel like I can just "tell" if a person means it when they talk about gay rights issues.

Again, I'll state, I do not think Obama is a bad person, just not the right person for me. I can just feel it, when I hear Hillary speak, she connects to me and believes in gay rights. The same way I just felt like Elizabeth Edwards meant it when she said she supported gay marriage even if her husband did not.

Are you a big Hillary supporter or just a so-so supporter?

I doubt anyone on DU would be in the south east area wanting to go see a traveling gay circus* I just run into a lot of people who do not believe me when I try to explain that I head up a traveling gay variety and circus event. They either think I am lying or crazy.

5. No, I'm not a big Hillary supporter actually.

I'd say "so-so," but I want her to win now that Edwards is out, and I have her supporter's backs.

You know how you can criticize your own brother (or sister) to no end, but when someone else does it, you're like, "oh hell no," and come to his/her defense?

That's how I am with Hillary now.

I absolutely don't think Obama is trustworthy. I think his lack of apology is an indication he's not as sorry as he wants people to believe.

And I think he would change his mind about some of the "promises" he's made (such as DADT, DOMA)in a heartbeat, if it became politically disadvantageous.

The bottom line is I don't trust him, and that's a total deal breaker.

But I like all of your points. You sound really smart

And OMG, I LOVE Elizabeth Edwards!!
