I think Obama supporters are upset that their guy didn't think of the 3 AM phone call first
Wow was that the ad ever effective!

Then again, a commercial like that wouldn't have worked for Obama. It only works for candidates who have attained real-life experience and know-how.

Anyway, the ad worked for her. In one week, Hillary went from being behind Obama in the national Democratic polls to ahead of him among all Democrats across the nation.

The other good thing about the ad is that McCain will never be able to use a similar ad against Hillary when he runs against her in the General Election because she has already gotten word out there that she can handle those calls, and she convinced the American people that she is competent when it comes to national security. The lady is always thinking ahead. :smoke:

1. Nope. He would never have used it.
It is the old politics of fear.
That is NOT what he about - from the beginning of his campaign he has decried people who use 911 for political gain.

So many people JUST MAKE STUFF up.

Aren't we sick enough of Bush/Cheney fearmongering? It may work in the short run now, but it is a long way to the nomination. It is despicable and it will backfire.

"Fear mongering" is just how Obama supporters are defining it. The real world calls it "reality"
that she is ready to be Commander in Chief. Why the heck SHOULDN'T she take advantage of her competence? Anyone in her position would do the same.

51. What competence? What experience. Josh Marshall agrees...
Bringing It On Herself

The ChiTrib looks at Clinton's claims of foreign policy experience. And the verdict is not a good one. I refer back to my point from yesterday -- she doesn't need to be a seasoned foreign policy hand. But she's setting herself up for a fall when she claims to be.

This is the issue of our times. On March 20, vote as if the future of the world is at stake. Mondale. This president will know what he's doing, and that's the difference between Gary Hart and Walter Mondale."

That makes no sense. Just because she put out a ad doesn't make it true. Some people may believe it now but McCain can use that ad to make a mockery of her claim, just like many of the editorial cartoons have already done.

Because, as you know, there has already been a poll that has said that McCain wins the "who do you want answering the phone" poll among all 3 candidates. It was just as stupid when Mondale made the argument in the Spring and voters said Reagan in November of 1984.

It is always upsetting to find out people are not what they pretend to be-

McCain would bury Hillary on experience and you and she know it. That is one of her weakest points.
Experience that is less than favorable is not something people use to their favor unless they have nothing else to work with.

44. No. Based on her real-life experiences in Iraq, such as this one:
Senators Bayh and Clinton, Congressman McHugh Visit Iraq and Afghanistan

Our Congressional delegation trip provided me with an invaluable opportunity to evaluate the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan first hand. As I take these experiences back to my work in the Senate, my thoughts will also remain with the service members who we met on this trip, from the men and women in uniform fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan to the wounded servicemembers we saw in Landstuhl. As Americans, we should be proud of these brave young men and women and continue to offer them our full support. I am sure that my work on the Senate Armed Services Committee and in the Senate more generally will reflect the experiences that I had on this Congressional delegation.

37. Uhhhhh, one of Obama's aides says he isn't ready for a 3am call...
Susan Rice, a foreign policy adviser to Senator Barack Obama, discusses the foreign policy credentials of both Democrats against the tableau of Mrs. Clinton’s 3 a.m. phone call advertisement about who would be best prepared for an international crisis. (While your children are safely asleep.)

“Clinton hasn’t had to answer the phone at three o’clock in the morning and yet she attacked Barack Obama for not being ready,'’ Ms. Rice said. “They’re both not ready to have that 3 a.m. phone call.”

More and video at the link: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/06/obama-aide-neither-candidate-ready-for-3-am-call/

That is the best response the Obama team
could come up with? They are both not ready?
Why is he talking up the 3am call in his speeches
when his own advisers tell him he is not ready
either?

42. Correct. One of the TV analysts even said that Obama's response to her ad wasn't effective
and that he needs to do better.

38. See, I disagree.
I think the reason many Obama supporters are upset is because for the past 7 years, we've watched the bush administration use bullshit fear-mongering to justify atrocities and strip us of our rights. And then a democratic presidential candidate runs a fear mongering ad in order to boost her support. I think that's why the majority of us are upset.

39. This is what's wrong with the 3AM ad
If Hillary should be picked over Obama because she has more experience, shouldn't McCain be picked over Hillary because HE has more experience? Indeed, Keith reported last night that the McCain camp has made "a tongue-in-cheek request" that Hillary KEEP running the commercial!

40. Nope
If Hillary should be picked over Obama because she has more experience, shouldn't McCain be picked over Hillary because HE has more experience?

No. McCain might have more experience than her, but not by much. Having more experience doesn't mean that she doesn't have enough.

OTOH, Obama has little to none when it comes to foreign experience, so the ad is valid and effective from her veiwpoint, and McCain won't be able to touch her in a similar ad, just because you think that he has "more".

Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 01:03 PM by rocknation
Seeing that McCain is has been "tested" under actual combat conditions, I think that beats her in quality as well as in quantity of experience. Put another way, would you be impressed with McCain's experience if it involved looking over HIS presidential spouse's shoulder?

104. it can be qualify however anyone trying to defend it wants.........
but in simple terms it was wrong.
bad for the party.
bad for reinforcing the idea that democrats are soft of security.
bad for suggesting there is something to fear from a black man in a power position.
wrong for scarring voters rather than inspiring them.
wrong for turning away potential voters.
wrong for reinforcing negative onions about her.
she didn't think this through.
is winning at these costs so attractive?

There just isn't very much that come out anymore that ISN'T 100% original, this being just one of many. So Hillary made it work for her in her own way. Kudos to her for taking advantage.

55. He's running a positive campaign.. why would he want to run a negative ad?
and he's also not trying to use the Bush-Rove Fear Machine tactics.

he gives the public credit for being able to realize that a president does not dress up in a suit & pearls, put glasses on, and sit in the dark all night, waiting for a phone to ring.

There ARE other people in the WH..they answer the phone, and then awaken the president if there is a crisis...probably AFTER they have called in the other necessary people who will consult on the "crisis"..

62. Ad
It wasn't effective. Hillary barely squeaked out a win in Ohio, where she had been massively ahead not long before. She lost in Texas, a fact that doesn't seem to have penetrated the thick skulls of her supporters. She became a national laughing-stock for recycling a tired old ad that only pointed-up how utterly UNprepared she is to be CIC. She revealed the depths to which she is prepared to sink in her campaign, and how much she is willing to damage the party. The result? She is being abandoned in droves by the SDs, her only hope for taking the nomination.

Only the most deluded, fanatical supporter could possibly see that ad as anything less than a disaster for her, and a complete embarrasment.

I expect you to support McCain if Hillary becomes the nominee when he starts making jokes and running smear ads about Hillary's military experience and how the Democrats are too wimpy to handle national security.

We all seemed to hate it when B*sh & the GOP were scaring us to win elections, but it's OK when your candidate of choice does it? Obama promised to change those shitty politics and that mind-set that got us into Iraq (Fear & terra 24/7)... that's a MAJOR reason I suport him. That you condone or even feel proud of a Democrat using a B*sh taic to "scare" up votes is really really sad.

95. The 3 am call ad was very effective ...
There are a lot of various issues that a 3 am call could entail, terrorism at home or abroad, international crisis elsewhere in the world, national fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, bridge collapses or a break in a levy . Just the other day, some weirdo decided to bomb a military recruiting station in New York while on a bike (I bet Hillary got a call about this early that morning). The 3 am call is pertinent in today's world (thanks to George Bush), I didn't find anything offensive or alarmist about it but just realistic.

Report: Girl "Safe And Asleep" In Hillary's 3 A.M. Ad Is Supporting...Obama!

It turns out that one of the kids who was "safe and asleep" in Hillary's controversial red phone ad would prefer that Barack Obama answer that 3 A.M. phone call in the White House.

A new report from King5, an NBC affiliate in Washington State, says that the first sleeping girl shown in the ad is a young local resident named Casey Knowles. King5 adds that the footage of her asleep is eight-year-old stock footage -- and that she turns voting age next month.

And according to the report, she is supporting Obama...
