OBAMA Says He Will "Review Every Executive Order Issued By Bush"

Candidates rouse crowds in Wyoming

By David Olinger
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 03/08/2008 08:26:59 AM MST

CASPER — Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton crisscrossed Wyoming on Friday, campaigning for every available vote in a state that last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1964.

Saturday's prizes: 12 delegates in the Wyoming caucuses and precious momentum in a seesaw primary race.

Obama told a cheering crowd at a town-hall meeting in Casper that he would restore respect for law in the White House by reviewing every executive order issued by President Bush and discarding any deemed unconstitutional.

Obama's comments came in response to a question from a man in the audience who said he worried that presidents sometimes consider themselves above the law.

I may be wrong but it should go a step further by Possibly ( I am not sure on the constitutionality) rescinding all signing statements. They were given as way the shrub laying groundwork to circumvent the law.

148. Well, knowing nothing else, this alone would clinch it for me.
That's ABSOLUTELY one of the things OUR new president simply MUST do. A total and across-the-board ESSENTIAL. Priority ONE.

Hopefully that includes the sneaky-ass decision to lock up all the presidential papers from reagan on up. Funny enough, including bush's daddy's papers. I WANNA SEE THOSE MOST OF ALL!!!!!!! (Well, besides junior's, that is.)

This is VERY good to hear. Go, O!

75. Professor is a rank

Professor is an academic rank. It's like being a "made man" in academia. You're tenured and you can pretty much teach how you like from that point on. You still have to report to the bosses (department head, dean, president) though and they can make your life difficult (more classes, lower level) if you piss them off.

137. goes like this
with a PhD and an appt to teach at a U. the first level is Assistant Professor, if you get tenure, you are moved to Associate Professor. You then have another review in X amt. of years and you are then appointed to Full Professor status. Each level has salary minimums for that U. and that discipline. If you do amazing work and get nominated for a Pulitzer, etc. you can then be the "XX Professor of XX. The first is the name of someone who has endowed a dept. or U. with funds to reward work.

Just as anyone who works in a library is not a librarian (and there are all sorts of diff. kinds of librarians, too, some whose work involves tenure, just like Profs, and whose specialities do not overlap, anyone who teaches at a U. is not a professor. Someone who is a professor in one discipline is not a professor in another simply b/c of a PhD. Someone who is not a professor who teaches classes because of his/her expertise is generally called a Lecturer or a Visiting Scholar, etc.

I probably missed some of it, too. LostinVA makes a good point. No need to get upset with that. It doesn't detract from Obama's credentials because he would not teach at a well-regarded U. if he didn't have the chops.

That's like calling my mother who is a nurse a doctor because she is teaching a medical class. No one would ever extend that to my mother. Unless of course this women,my mother, had her doctorate.

What you never had a foreign TA? Your college experience is obviously incomplete.

Professors really aren't teachers per se. Their primary function is the generation of knowledge. Teaching is something that is done on the side. Teaching low level classes (especially remedial stuff) is often relegated to Limited Term Lecturers and Graduate Aids (me).

I've never been taught by anyone who wasn't a professor. There are schools out there that do not use TAs. So please don't assume if someone is unfamiliar with TAs that it means their college experience is obviously incomplete. I am familiar with them, but I've got a couple of alumni friends who wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about if you used the term.

This is my most important issue also. Well, the occupations are pretty important, too.

But our system is based on checks and balances, as laid out in the constitution. All the treasonous crap Bush has been allowed to get away with has to be wiped out like Polio or the Plague.

Like Frank Zappa, I am also a Constitutional Fundamentalist. With a fully restored Constitution, we could have a government of the people once again.

93. She said it in Oct.2007
Hillary Clinton blasted the Bush administration's expansion of executive power today, pledging to conduct a review of Bush's abuses if elected to the White House. She explained her general thoughts in a substantive interview with The Guardian's Michael Tomasky:

I think it is clear that the power grab undertaken by the Bush-Cheney administration has gone much further than any other president and has been sustained for longer. Other presidents, like Lincoln, have had to take on extraordinary powers but would later go to the Congress for either ratification or rejection. But when you take the view that they're not extraordinary powers, but they're inherent powers that reside in the office and therefore you have neither obligation to request permission nor to ask for ratification, we're in a new territory here. And I think that I'm gonna have to review everything they've done because I've been on the receiving end of that. There were a lot of actions which they took that were clearly beyond any power the Congress would have granted or that in my view that was inherent in the constitution. There were other actions they've taken which could have obtained congressional authorization but they deliberately chose not to pursue it as a matter of principle.

133. Yup. NYT: Obama followed the Hillary model....
"He met with nearly one-third of the Senate, from both sides of the aisle, including his future rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, to learn about the institution and solicit advice on how to succeed. That shaped a strategy: work hard, tend to your constituents, and, above all, get along with others. He spent many weekends traveling across Illinois for town-hall-style meetings.

‘The Hillary model’
Mr. Obama’s advisers referred to it as “the Hillary model,” patterned after Mrs. Clinton’s approach when she joined the Senate in 2001. But while Mr. Obama expressed admiration for her at the time, he dissuaded reporters from making too close a comparison.

And just getting bu$h out of the Blight House won't fix it.
We need a President who respects laws, treaties and human life, that would be a good start anyway.

He is a cooperator and a listener, as opposed to being an arrogant know-it-all like Bush-Cheney. I fear Hillary is a bit more like Bush-Cheney. I also note that Obama's campaign is better organized. Why did Hillary not plan her campaign beyond Super Tuesday? Hmmm. Bush did not plan his Iraq campaign beyond the initial invasion.

Had he pushed the investigations in place we may have avoided the divisiveness of the whole Clinton presidency as well as the entire Bush debacle.

64. Rule of Law is my number one issue also, But why not go further?
Why not ask Congress for a law that would preclude any future executive orders based on the legality of the order reviewable for interpretation by the Courts? This would give a balance to the executive order bussiness that it currently does not have. There is a HUGE problem when Congress passes a law and the President signs an order stating that he is above the law.

she will continue to expand the powers of the presidency in the same way that bush has. We saw that even while first lady, she took a dim view of our Constitution and abused what little power she had. The FBI files for instance. The thought of Hillary have the tools that bush put in place is truly frightening. She has an obvious lust for power and no matter what she says, we all know that she will never give up anything, constitutional or not, if it increases that power.

And who gets to "deem" which are unconstitutional? He is part of this Congress that has already allowed them to take effect. How do you reverse that damage? Empty words from another Congressional enabler is all I see. And that goes for Clinton and McCain too. If you can't stand up to Bush in Congress, don't expect me to believe you will at any other time just because you say it to get votes.

He worked with Project Vote as well, which is another group that protects civil rights.

123. Hillary Clinton's reply to question asked her at National Town Hall meeting
prior to the March 4th primaries, addressed this. She was asked what she would do the very first day she was in office as President. The first answer Hillary gave was that she would take the Constitution out of Cold Storage. She then said she would reverse many of George W. Bush's exectutive orders. That was the first time I heard either candidate discuss overturning Bush's executive orders. She followed that by saying she would convene her military and security advisors to begin implementing withdrawal from Iraq.

129. Well done. Signing statements too, though.
Every bill Bush used a signing statement on should be cleansed. Maybe just write one bill that makes signing statements null and void.

140. a question for ppl here
when did Hillary start the chant, "Yes We Will."

I thought the "Yes We Can" was Obama's thing. Did I miss it before in her campaigns (before Ohio, that is).

144. No. "Yes we can" was the Farm Workers Union thing, their slogan...
then he 'borrowed it', then after a lot of back and forth btwn obama and hil camp talking about the difference btwn talk and action people started say 'yes she *will*' to illustrate a difference. That was about 4 weeks ago maybe. i could be off by a week or 2.

What if we nominate someone who really understands the Constitution? Couldn`t that be problematic?
