Let's just flip a goddamn coin or something and get this nonsense over with. |
|
At this point I'm ceasing to give a rat's ass who wins, just as long as we can end this game of Mutually Assured Destruction, stop the bleeding, field a candidate who is still relatively free of campaign-induced brain damage and capable of standing under his/her own power, and start stomping some Republicans for a change. The longer this insanity goes on, the poorer our chances are gonna be in November. I have a growing fear that we are in the process of blowing the best chance we've had since about 1932, and the stakes are at least as great as they were back then.

9. OK, truth to tell, I have a lukewarm preference |

that I suspect on the basis of available evidence is somewhat like yours. Sure, I'd prefer that candidate, but I'm getting really concerned that we're gonna blow the whole thing with all the dirty infighting. I want a Democrat much more than I want a specific candidate. I probly wouldn't be going on like this is Edwards were still in the race, but he isn't.

8. Jackpine Radical is correct. There is nothing left on the Democratic |
|
ticket except middle-of-the-road democrats. And as Molly Ivins used to say, IIRC, There ain't nothing in the middle of the road except yellow stripes and dead armadilloes.

but we can't expect the candidates to stop trying until the winner is declared. WE, hoever, don't need to try so hard. Flipping is coin is as good as any other method... as long as it's a Dem in the WH next January.

4. Democrats always fight because of disagreements over policy. It's old-hat. |

The problem with being a wide-base party is that you invite conflict. You've got right wing Democrats and left wing Democrats trying to set the agenda. I'm speaking, of course, in a macroscopic sense, not necessarily about this contest in general.
We haven't really elected a left wing Democrat in a very long time. LBJ would be seen as far left in today's Congress. FDR and Truman would be considered extreme.

10. Those who favor leftist policies are usually handicapped. |

If you look at US history for the last 100 years, the only time left wing ideas truly set the agenda was in the aftermath of the Great Depression. It was then that the establishment relented in its resistance. Otherwise, they feared they'd get their heads chopped off by the radicals. In such situations, better to accept pink left wing reforms instead of blood-red revolution.
Since then, you have laws passed like the Taft-Hartley Act which are total assaults against labor in this country, and from that law was born the "right-to-work" laws which are just another way to sink labor unions and further break the power of labor. Then, you get anti-left propaganda from corporate news outlets like supply-side economics as the best solution to our ills and deregulation. Now, we have this free trade nonsense which simply pits workers against each other in a race to the bottom, while the boss is the only victor in that struggle and corporate welfare whenever big business gets in trouble because of its own shenanigans.
