Why were "low level" employees allowed to access his files? There is some
thing wrong there.

Controls should have been built in for dignitaries above a certain level such as U.S. Senators, and the like that there records could only be accessed by supervisors at a high level. I smell a rat.

2. Were they employees or independent private contractors?

My understanding is that some functions have been privatized in the State Department and that non-government personnel accessed the file who were working under contract.

5. Contractors -- CSC according to another thread
I thought that civil servants had to take an oath or something -- that they were more "culpable" if they
made a mistake -- and maybe contractors do the same but I wonder ...

6. this happens at the IRS and phone companies and such. Famous
people are always getting their stuff looked at by idiots doing computer work. You hear about it now and then. But never like this at this level unless its attached to a group seeking information for scandal.

11. People being curious?!!
Hey!! I wonder where did senator Obama go, let me log in and get this info, knowing that everything done on a secured network is being logged, and that I can possibly lose my Job, but I am curious.

8. You'd be surprised how many people have access to your personal information.
Really it's just a matter of being at the right computer terminal or having the right password.

This is *not* the same as Clinton's situation.

10. If they were data entry temps, they SHOULD NOT have been anywhere near...
...the main database. They should've been working on a seperate database (to be later merged with the main database by State Dept IT personnel).

12. My husband was a consultant on a huge payroll project and only employees
at a very high level were allowed to view, say, the CEO's salary.

In the government the "alert" that was triggered should have been sent directly to the Inspector General's office.

Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:50 PM by rocknation
I'm just not buying into the idea of three different single-digit-wage peons each having such a crush on Obama that they just HAD to look in his passport file. Also, keep in mind this is George Bush's Department of State. Imprudent curiosity, my donkey.

Maybe put there to mine Obama's files. They could be disposed of quickly, by firing, without a hearing, then simply dissappear. I smell a Rat.

17. We don't want contractors securing our ports or screening people at airports.
We feel that the responsibility of the task requires they be government employees.

Why the hell is the upkeep of passport records for citizens of the United States contracted out?

Why are these not government employees, subject to federal employee regulations when dealing with high-ranking/high level citizens?
