BREAKING: AP: NM Gov. Bill Richardson Endorsing Obama

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president, calling him a "once-in-a- lifetime leader" who can unite the nation and restore America's international leadership.

Richardson, who dropped out of the Democratic race in January, is to appear with Obama on Friday at a campaign event in Portland, Ore., The Associated Press has learned.

The governor's endorsement comes as Obama leads among delegates selected at primaries and caucuses but with national public opinion polling showing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton pulling ahead of him amid controversy over statements by his former pastor.

Richardson has been relentlessly wooed by Obama and Clinton for his endorsement. As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also has been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap in time Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination.

"I believe he is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America's moral leadership in the world," Richardson said in a statement obtained by the AP. "As a presidential candidate, I know full well Sen. Obama's unique moral ability to inspire the American people to confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad in a spirit of bipartisanship and reconciliation."

Richardson's endorsement also could help Obama pick up support among Hispanics, who are the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority.

Clinton has been the favorite of Hispanics in primaries and caucuses, according to exit polls. She won the New Mexico caucus in early February with a nearly 2-to-1 advantage among Hispanics.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. He served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line. He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has show it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally," Richardson said.

Obama said he was "deeply honored" to have Richardson's support.

"Whether it's fighting to end the Iraq war or stop the genocide in Darfur or prevent nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists, Gov. Richardson has been a powerful voice on issues of global security, peace and justice, earning five Nobel Peace Prize nominations," Obama said in a statement.

And no, I don't think it will ever happen. That doesn't mean it is impossible, or illegal for it to happen.

7. Thursday Morning
This morning Hillary had to be feeling pretty good. She was up 7 points in Gallup and for the first time in the campaign she had gathered control of the news cycle.

Now she is in Michigan and her "let them vote" spin is catching a little traction. The cable shows are going from that to Wright. Obama has trouble piercing the news cycle with his third speech. His speech on race is admired but it is difficult for the media to deal with it. Easier to start up another cycle of Wright

By evening all of the stories are gone. Passportgate has sucked all of the air out of the atmosphere.

Here we have a mystery oh and the reporters can smell the blood- they can see their awards being polished.

Who knew what, what happened with the information, why was their no investigation, who was the bad guys.

Could be 5-6 news cycles and now instead of showing Wright they are showing Obama as he gives his big speeches while they do the voice over.

Just as we go to bed Passportgate is developing 3-4 storylines pictures of a state department Kennedy shleping over to Obama to explain what has and what has not happened.

One more check on the computer and Richardson endorses Obama.

Obama campaign is going to have a week of favorable news cycles.

No wonder they call it Good Friday.

10. Let's not forget Gallup released a poll Thursday showing Clinton's lead down 2 points.
I love how the media goes with this story of Clinton taking a 7 point lead on Obama and the poll is already outdated within an hour of the news being released, since he cut the lead to 5.

Gotta love the media.

27. This is Huuuuuuuuuuuuge!!!
Richardson makes the choice of his heart over the fear of political retribution of the Clintons, despite serving as Bill's Energy Secretary. This will send a powerful message to others that might be afraid of Clinton vengeance that it is alright to vote with your heart.

Beyond that, Richardson can serve as a strong advocate in the Hispanic community after the race comes down to the choice between Obama and McCain. This election will be determined not by poll numbers, bu by turnout and we need Hispanics to turnout.

Richardson talks about "a spirit of bipartisanship and reconciliation" from the Obama camp. This is precisely the tone we have all waited for since 9/11. Not the bipartisanship where GOP neo-cons do whatever they want and Democrats play lapdogs and authorize whatever they say, but a true spririt of coming together and finding a common purpose.

33. Richardson said a while back
that he paid President Clinton back for his generosity by doing a good job in the appointments he gave him.

Still, I'm a bit stunned that he's come out & endorsed Obama. That's going to make some Hillary people locally go all  .

quid-pro-quo in there, that's perfectly okay with me as
well.

29. BusinessWeek: Hillary Targets the Credit Crisis as only candidate
I dont understand Richardson. HRC is on the ball when it comes to hispanic issues, and especially the economic sector.

When news of Bear Stearns fire sale hit on 17, it didn't take long for reaction to come in from the campaign trail. All three candidates—Republican John McCain and Democratic rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama—made statements that day supporting the need for swift action to ensure financial stability.

But only one mentioned she had talked that morning with Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. and the head of the New York Federal Reserve to get an update and pass along her views on the government-engineered deal. It was a small but telling move designed to highlight Clinton's contacts and knowledge of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

It won't be the last of such moves. On Mar. 20, Clinton called on Congress and the Bush Administration to pass a second stimulus bill targeted more directly toward helping struggling homeowners. She pledged a renewed push for an earlier plan that would provide $30 billion in funding to help blighted towns buy foreclosed or abandoned properties and counsel homeowners, and proposed an additional $10 billion to assist state agencies that refinance mortgages

37. "on the ball" with hispanic issues
:spray:  Don't make me laugh. The only thing she knows about hispanic issues is that when you need votes in McAllen, tell 'em the old saw about getting them a veteran's hospital. See, the thing is, the folks there haven't yet figured out they're never going to get a veteran's hospital because the machines don't want people to get any ideas about what else they might be needing down there (like a law school, a med school, running water in the colonias, etc). And the machines support Hillary because they know she'll say all the right things, & then do nothing once elected.
