Edited on Sun Mar-23-08 12:11 PM by blogslut
Nevertheless, he still gives lectures, speeches and does consulting.

Wright retired as the official pastor of that particular church. That does not mean he is through with giving sermons.

EDIT ADD: I have no idea if Wright is giving a sermon @ Trinity today. I do know the pastor that replaced him will be giving and Easter Sunday sermon.

Born on September 22, 1941, in Philadelphia

Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. is one of the most widely acclaimed black preachers in the United States. Combining social concern, spiritual growth, and political activism, Wright, who preaches in a black traditional style, brings a message of hope, redemption, and renewal. In 1972 he became pastor of a small United Church of Christ congregation in the inner city of Chicago. After over 30 years in the pulpit, his congregation has grown to 10,000 and is the largest United Church of Christ congregation in the United States.

In 1959 Wright enrolled at Virginia Union University, in Richmond, where he remained until 1961. That year he left school to join the military. He served in the Second Marine Division of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961 to 1963, achieving the rank of private first class. In 1963 he graduated as valedictorian from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, and from 1964 to 1967, he served as a cardio pulmonary technician at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. During 1965 and 1966, he was awarded with three Presidential Commendations from President Lyndon B. Johnson.

After his discharge from the military, Wright continued his education. He enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1967, and was awarded a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master's degree in 1969. He then entered the University of Chicago Divinity School, receiving a master of arts degree in 1975. He ended his formal education in 1990 when he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree in black sacred music from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
----------------------------------------------
When Wright joined the staff of Trinity United Church of Christ as senior pastor, the inner city church boasted just 87 active members, most of whom came from the neighborhood surrounding the church. Wright embraced his new congregation and took up the phrase coined by his predecessor Rev. Dr. Reuben Sheares, "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian." Within months the church had adopted the phrase as its motto and vision. Under Wright's leadership, fueled by his passion, and motivated by his preaching, the congregation began to grow by leaps and bounds. By 2004 there were over 10,000 members, with people coming from across the metro area. The congregation, which proudly notes its diverse socio-economic mix, dedicated a new 2,700 worship center in 1997.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Wright has authored several books, including Africans Who Shaped Our Faith, Good News! Sermons of Hope for Today's Families, and What Makes You So Strong? Sermons of Joy and Strength from Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. According to Cleophus J. LaRue in The Heart of Black Preaching, in his title sermon of What Makes You So Strong, Wright "demonstrates the power of the mighty sovereign at work in the lives of black people in twentieth century America. This sermon focuses on the root of black strength and survivability. Wright makes it clear throughout the sermon that the source of all strength, and especially black strength, is none other than the Spirit of God." As in his preaching, in his writing Wright focuses on the dual issues of corporate concern and spiritual suste nance. His latest publication, What Can Happen When We Pray: A Daily Devotional, was published in 2002.

In recognition of his contributions, Wright has been awarded seven honorary doctoral degrees. He has also served on a number of boards and commissions, including serving on the board of trustees for Virginia Union University and Chicago Theological Seminary. He continues to be a highly sought after preacher, teacher, and lecturer.

14. Yes, I saw that on the TUCC web site earlier
And I just want to mention Rev Moss already had his Easter sermon and it's already hit the MSM. His focus or theme was on Obama. It was basically the MSM's lynching of a black man. I find that odd considering Jesus rose from the dead today which should have been Moss' focus. Moss also went on to call out different outlets. He called NPR National Publican Radio, Republican News Media, Jerusalem Republican Outlet as they are Lynching Obama much like the way Jesus was Lynched/crucified. And there were a few other media outlets but can't remember them. This attention is NOT helping Obama in trying to distance himself from the race label. I hope no one calls me names by posting this but I'm merely posting what happened. In my opinion, Rev Moss is merely keeping the race issue alive and growing.

22. The whole thing stinks to me
I'm support Obama and voted for him but any church that injects themselves into the political process offends me. The right wing churches do it much more often and more blatantly with tv shows and media preachers but I can't be critical of one without being critical of the other and the calling someone the Jerusalem news is not going to go over well at all. I don't see how any of this is helping at all, I thought the church was about healing wounds not opening them up.

29. Calling people names doesn't address that
Calling news organizations names is not being real, I believe in Obama and what he is about and his church is not helping. When they call news outlets names or say he is being lynched they just come off as petty and that doesn't address the larger issues. One man is not the issue hear, the issue is bigger than one man.

31. When the news organizations deserve it...
then yes it's right. They lied to all of us, and took those 15-30 secs out of context. I choose to judge this Church based on more than that, just like I choose to judge anyone in my life, on more than the sum of a few sec meeting.

At any rate, while I appreciate your objection, this is Easter, and I am going to continue listening to this beautiful sermon.

Happy Easter. if you celebrate it. If not, then have a good day :)

and trying to smear Rev. Wright. The NYT wrote about Obama's pastor last April, and evidenced by the letter he wrote to them in response to the article, they misrepresented what he said.

It's okay to do a human interest story, but the media has intentionally engaged in a campaign to try to destroy a man who by all accounts is a revered and well-respected minister.

It's shameful and despicable.

55. I just love this church. Really, if anything, this scandal has restored my faith.
God really can take the worst and make something good out of it.

More people are hearing God's word.

More people are seeing how true Christians conduct themselves, and it's not like "Jesus Camp."

Instead of shutting things down and being secretive, Trinity has opened it's doors and said "come, all." They've incurred extra costs because of all the additional personnel hired to accommodate the increased "visitors" to the church.

But they aren't complaining. They are still praising God and helping those poor southsiders.

It's enough to make you weep.

69. Prayer: "We can feel that you are doing something so amazing.. people from around the country are
getting a glimpse of your Son. We will tell our children that we stood on the right side of history. When forces came against us, we stood steadfast upon Your Word. We will tell them we are not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will tell our children, at one moment in time when the spotlight was on us, we used that moment to glorify You, to bless those who are on the margins. We give you thanks, Yes We Do. We thank our enemies who are confused friends. We thank you for hundreds of emails of people apologizing because they were manipulated. We thank you for the prayers of those around the country. We don't know what you are about to do, but you are about to break down some barriers, about to loose some chains. We don't know what you are going to do, but someone is about to be set free. Let your anointing fall in this place, that even when people drive by, they just have to say Thank You, because they can feel the Spirit emanating from this House. It is in your name we pray, the name above all other names. You've already been through this Lord. This is no comparison to what you did on Calvalry. We lift up your name and offer this prayer right now, in the name of Jesus, that the people of God may say, Amen !

(some sentences/words skipped, but this were the main parts.. beautiful Easter prayer)

This is the church that the media tried to demonize and trash?

The church that preached we all have value, no matter what we've been through?

I firmly believe Trinity will be vindicated and that process of vindication has begun. The reporters sitting in that audience digging for dirt are going to experience an internal conflict between their mission of slander and their conscience. I don't think they can continue to sit through these sermons and not be moved.
