Advisers to Both Fault Obama Camp
Sunday, March 23, 2008 2:43 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prominent supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama on Sunday both faulted Obama's campaign for allowing a retired general and backer of the Illinois senator to equate comments by Clinton's husband to McCarthyism.

"I don't believe President Clinton was implying that," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a former presidential candidate who endorsed Obama last week. …….

Asked whether Obama's campaign was being too negative in accusing former President Clinton of McCarthyism, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton supporter, said, "Of course ... the Obama campaign tries to have it both ways," he said.

Rendell said Bill Clinton was saying what many people think, that the campaign should focus on the economy, health care and the candidates' experience, for example, and not on race and other distractions.

"And instead they launch this all-out attack trying to take an inference out of President Clinton's words that no fair person could take," Rendell said. "It's an example of the negativity that Governor Richardson is talking about.

"If they want to tone it down, don't accuse someone of McCarthyism," Rendell said.

Both governors commented on "Fox News Sunday."

In Charlotte, N.C., last Friday and speculating about a general election matchup pitting his wife against Republican John McCain, Bill Clinton told a group of veterans: "I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country. And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."

Retired Gen. Merrill "Tony" McPeak, a co-chairman of Obama's campaign, took offense and accused Clinton of being divisive and trying to question Obama's patriotism. Standing with Obama at a campaign stop in southern Oregon, McPeak repeated Bill Clinton's comments for the audience, then said:

135. *sigh* Another completely fabricated Clinton quote?
Where, oh where, did Cliton call Obama unAmerican? Let me guess, the same time he said he was just like Jesse Jackson or that a black president was a fairy tale. It bookends in there quite nicely with the other fake quotes.

but IIRC Senator Clinton's campaign is just making things up or are walking around trying to point out Senator Obama's flaws with their collective feet in their mouths. Can we trust her not to do that to us as Americans? Will she change?

42. Rocknation Faults AdelphiaNet Camp for Piss-Poor Journalism
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 12:01 PM by rocknation
Never mind the original poster's headline--the STORY'S original headline doesn't have anything to do with the story, either! How come the reporter didn't notice that the Obama camp's negativity was IN RESPONSE to the Clinton camp's--because then the story would have no reason for being?

...Bill Clinton told a group of veterans: "I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country"...Retired Gen. Merrill "Tony" McPeak, a co-chairman of Obama's campaign, took offense and accused Clinton of being divisive and trying to question Obama's patriotism.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton supporter...said Bill Clinton was saying what many people think..."And...they launch this all-out attack trying to take an inference out of President Clinton's words that no fair person could take..."

Oh, so I should have inferred that it was HILLARY who Bill was accusing of being unpatriotic!

...New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a former presidential candidate who endorsed Obama last week...(said) "(T)he campaign has gotten too negative — too many personal attacks, too much negativity that is not resounding with the public."
How does that translate into "Supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama BOTH faulted Obama's campaign...?" If I may "take an inference" as a "fair person," I believe Richardson is faulting BOTH camps.

"If they want to tone it down, don't accuse someone of McCarthyism," Rendell said.
And if THEY don't want be accused of McCarthyism, they shouldn't accuse someone of not loving their country!

Leading Obama Adviser Attacks Ex-President for Remarks

<...>

In response to reporters in Oregon on Friday, General McPeak compared the former president to Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, who aggressively pursued those he believed to be communists in the 1950s. “I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I’ve had enough of it,” General McPeak said.

The bitter exchange between the surrogates for Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama highlighted the rising tensions between the two Democratic presidential candidates in their prolonged fight for the party’s nomination.

“To liken these comments to McCarthyism is absurd,” said Phil Singer, a Clinton campaign spokesman. He said General McPeak was misinterpreting the remarks, suggesting it was an intentional effort to divert attention from a controversy involving inflammatory statements by Mr. Obama’s former pastor.

Never mind the NYT's biased headline: "attacks"?

Singer is continuing to push the phony smear against Wright.

CLINTON: Ross gave a good answer but I've got to respond directly to Mr. Bush. You have questioned my patriotism.

BUSH: (Inaudible).

CLINTON: You even brought some right-wing congressman into the White House to plot how to attack me for going to Russia in 1969-70, when over 50,000 other Americans did. Now, I honor your service in World War II, I honor Mr. Perot's service in uniform and the service of every man and woman who ever served, including Admiral Crowe, who was your Chairman of the joint Chiefs and who's supporting me. But when Joe McCarthy went around this country attacking people's patriotism he was wrong. He was wrong. And a senator from Connecticut stood up to him named Prescott Bush. Your father was right to stand up to Joe McCarthy, you were wrong to attack my patriotism. I was opposed to the war but I loved my country and we need a president who will bring this country together, not divide it. We've had enough division. I want to lead a unified country.

Bill 1992, meet Bill 2008!

Not only did Bill question Obama's patriotism, he like Hilary also despicably lavished praise on McCain in the video.

He knew exactly what he was implying!

Obama Campaign Attacks Clinton’s Ties to Lobbyists, Defends McPeak

Campaign topper Plouffe says Clinton has been “wallowing” in support from lobbyists during campaign, says she’s gotten $900,000 in contributions.

Also says Obama probably wouldn’t have used same words as supporter Gen. McPeak, but thinks general had a “fair reading” of B. Clinton’s quote. Says questioning people’s patriotism has “no place.”

58. This is a good example of disingenuous comments made by HRC supporters.
One person, Gen. McPeak, makes an unfortunate comment, and suddenly the whole Obama campaign has gone negative. Wasn't it HRC herself who said that both campaigns cannot control everything said by their vociferous supporters?

To accuse the whole Obama campaign of negativity based upon the comments of one person, and then to ignore the entire "kitchen sink" strategy of the Clinton campaign which has thrown one negative barb after another at Obama, is the height of hypocrisy.

Then we have Carville calling Richardson a "Judas." If that's not negative, then I'd like to know what is, but you don't even mention that. This shows how one sided your argument is. Yes, Carville is only one man too, but if you are going to cherry pick one comment from an Obama supporter then I can do the same thing about a Clinton supporter.

89. Another example of Hillary Bush campaign tactics
I just posted about this particular Bush Jr dirty tactic that Hillary Clinton has embraced. In that case, the tactic was calling for Obama to leave the race when, obviously, since he is the winner and has the momentum, it is Hillary Clinton who should leave the race.

This is the way this particular tactic works: Bush Jr/Clinton campaign would accuse the Gore or Kerry/Obama campaign of doing something that the Bush Jr/Clinton campaign is actually guilty of doing (but we just haven't found out yet) but Gore or Kerry/Obama is not guilty of doing.

The tactic in this folder is applied to the accusation of Clinton and their minions that Obama is "negative" when, in fact, it his HRC who has been negative for months. Carville's crack about Judas is just another example of the filth spewing from the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Hillary Clinton voted for Bush's most heinous policies. She sent American jobs to India. She has ignored the pleas from the very people who put her into office and instead did the bidding of the neocons in Congress.

And Hillary Clinton uses Bush/Rove tactics in the campaign. This latter is a slap in the face to Democratic Party voters who hated it when Bush/Rove did it. Either she is clueless about this, or doesn't care because, damn it, "HILLARY WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT!"

So if you want four more years of Bush Jr, be sure to vote for Hillary Clinton. Not only will you get Bush Jr policies and secrecy, but you'll also have the added shame that it is a Democrat who is doing it.

92. 'Senator Obama, where is your sense of decency?'

Leave it to Barack Obama, in a further sign that his campaign realizes they are in deep trouble, to unleash the ghost of Joseph McCarthy, a red-baiting Republican who smeared honest Americans by accusing them of being communists. As a side note, does anyone remember who worked for McCarthy besides Roy Cohn? Yep, Robert F. Kennedy. So, since Obama has been compared to RFK are we to assume that, like RFK, he is the one who would work with someone like McCarthy in order to further his political career? Just asking.

97. This Doesn’t Help
Barack Obama declares that Reverend Wright does not preside over a “crackpot church” and that had Obama personally heard “the most offensive remarks that had come up . . . we probably would have a more intense conversation.” Bluntly, the issue is not whether the church is “crackpot,” but whether the stated positions of its preacher are. And if so, why at worst would these “probably” would have provoked only an “intense conversation”?

Obama seems to be an intelligent and decent person. Yet when he says this sort of thing, you wonder what in heaven’s name is wrong with him. What would it have taken for Obama to leave Wright’s church? Or speak out publicly against these statements? It is growing painfully obvious that Obama is drawing some distinction, which he doesn’t want to or can’t possibly explain, between “controversial” statements which he was familiar with (and sat through) and these “most offensive” comments. Isn’t it time to come clean about what that distinction is and what he did hear so we can assess what type of comments he thinks don’t even warrant “an intense conversation”?

146. What in heavens name is wrong
with people who act like hearing a few snips repeated over and over represent decades of sermons?

I am glad Obama said more in defense of the church and hope that we will be hearing more from many. Does the media think him saying it isn't a crackpot church is a controversial thing to say? Good, let them investigate this church thoroughly.
The clips the media repeated did sound racist and anti-American. Kudos to them for a gotcha on Obama. They demeaned the life work of a Pastor. The HistoryMakers describe some of Rev. Dr. Wright's history here including his 3 Presidential Commendations.

They demeaned a church that was one of the only ones that refused to move to the suburbs, that has an amazing number of outreach programs and trashed a congregation that worship and serve there. They get threats and hate mail, the divinity school set to honor Rev Wright had to move the location for security reasons due to threats and they handily trashed a candidate as someone who listens to hate speech- all on the basis of a few minutes of words they found in hours of sermons. Hate? Racist?

The problem has never been Wright nor Obama listening to Wright nor the church...
It is the media intentionally distorting and misrepresenting knowing they will fuel hate and widen divisions.

"America's Chickens are coming home to roost" We all saw that rant that we kept hearing "that was just days after 9/11" and "oh my God he was saying they deserved to die" and horrors.
The clip is from this sermon
Wright talks about how he was caught far from home with no flights and wondering about what our response should be after reading a horrible verse in a psalm about bashing the heads of children of your enemies and he heard Ambassador Edward Peck,Former Chief of Mission in Iraq (on Fox news ironically) and Ambassador Peck said it was "America's Chickens are coming home to roost"
Then after his rant we all heard he points out
The ambassador said that the people we have wounded don't have the military capability we have, but they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them, and we need to come to grips with that.

He talks about the horror of what happened...the issue of violence begetting violence and how each of us need to look at our own relationship with God. It's still got those words in it that offend but it sure isn't what was presented.
His sermons are not offensive unless you work to excerpt a few lines from a few sermons and play them constantly.

The full text of Jeremiah Wright's "Audacity To Hope" sermon in 1990 is here:
That's the speech Obama got book title from and you understand why TV pundits mention that in hushed tones. Yes, how horrid for Obama to pretend to be a person of unity when he can be inspired bt a sermon that says things as bad as:
"The real lesson Hannah gives us from this chapter—the most important word God would have us hear—is how to hope when the love of God is not plainly evident. It's easy to hope when there are evidences all around of how good God is. But to have the audacity to hope when that love is not evident—you don't know where that somewhere is that my grandmother sang about, or if there will ever be that brighter day—that is a true test of a Hannah-type faith. To take the one string you have left and to have the audacity to hope—make music and praise God on and with whatever it is you've got left, even though you can't see what God is going to do"

and end with words as hateful as
"And that's why I say to you, hope is what saves us. Keep on hoping; keep on praying. God does hear and answer prayer"

A reporter on a Sunday show said that most reporters he knew had been poring through every speech and haven't been able to find more similar comments though certainly there will be a few in the great number to go through. It made me wonder why they don't feel a responsibility to report on what they have heard after destroying the reputation of the man and his whole church, let alone a presidential candidate. They are looking for things to attack with only and not simply the truth, any balance?
On almost every show thus week someone on the panel had even been to the church or knew someone close to them that did that said the clips did not represent him, the hosts seemed surprised. One said her brother reports that they are more conservative than most churches, focusing on self responsibility and family. Some said a lot more should come out about the church because the impression given was so far off.

I understand the truth would spoil the fun of being able to make cutting, false comments-but Truth is a good thing for heaven's sake?

91. Come on People!
I do not reply or post on an OP I do not check out. I actually watched as much of the speech that was available online.
If the repugs haven't taught us to educate ourselves before we vote yea or nay on something I don't know what will.

I read an OP based on this "McCarthyism" crap, and asked if anyone had actually seen the speech. Crickets.
I don't know if it's that I'm just on all of their ignore lists or if they're just refusing to answer any questions.
I've posted rebuttals of many statements and again, Crickets! None of my rebuttals have received a reply.

This is no longer a discussion board.
I say this because of the "let it sink" and "Ignore" campaigns.
Sen. Obama's supporters post an OP and the thread becomes a "yes we can" fest. Anyone who rebuts the OP gets ignored either by button or by LOL smileys.
There is no longer debate on this board. It has become more like a celebrity rag. Defamation, name calling, Photo Shopped pics and a total lack of respect for the opinion OR feelings of "others".
There are many posts that state that supporters of Sen. Obama can barely wait until they can start hitting the ALERT button instead of the IGNORE button. So the approximately 48% of Democrats on this board who do not or did not support Sen. Obama will not be welcome. And, as so many of us here believe, DU is a microcosm of the Party, that 48% will be ALERTED and IGNORED by the Democratic Nominee and the PARTY too.

I wonder what will happen to those of us who do not support Sen. Obama in the primary. It bothers me that the Democratic Party has followed the repugs lead campaign toward a 51% solution.

So when and IF Sen. Obama becomes the Democratic nominee for POTUS, this board becomes irrelivent to the Democratic Party.
IMHO we do not need cheerleaders. We need thoughtful cogent arguments in support of our candidate and from what I have seen on DU lately, that is no longer important.
We have become what we so abhor about the repugs, flag waving, rabidly blind followers of a candidate who WE do not feel should be held responsible to US for the answers to important questions.
Being a member of more than one minority, it disheartens me to see MY party turn it's back on me so thoroughly. I understand that DU isn't THE PARTY, but it WAS a place were divergent positions within the party WERE respected.
NO MORE!

I find these quotes poignant.
"The majority, oppressing an individual, is guilty of a crime, abuses its strength, and by acting on the law of the strongest breaks up the foundations of society." --Thomas Jefferson
" know too well the texture of the human mind, and the slipperiness of human reason, to consider differences of opinion otherwise than differences of form or feature. Integrity of views more than their soundness, is the basis of esteem." --Thomas Jefferson
And my favorite...
"The voice of the majority is no proof of justice." – Johann von Schiller

128. Hillary supporters obviously haven't been paying attention for the last month.
It's called the "kitchen sink" strategy.

140. Hypocritical crap...

Hill admit to throwing the kitchen sink at Obama, and you hill supporters cry that it is a great move, political cunning at it's best and you are proud to have someone like her representing you with her attacks and snide snarky comments.

Yet if someone connected to the obama campaign dares to say that hill is throwing the kitchen sink at obama, you cry foul that it is damn dirty slander and dirty campaigning for them to mention what hill has openly admitted she's doing.

Your idea of Obama's negative campaigning is him saying, "hillary is attacking me."

Very very hypocritical.... and it is that type of two faced BS that is why Hillary is losing.

Or is this just more stuff she made up?

138. So let me get this straight....

Clinton infers that obama is unamerican or does not love America... and that's fine.

But calling that type of snide attack on Obama's patriotism out for what it is... that's over the line?

"Both governors commented on "Fox News Sunday.""

Yep.... pretty much says it all.
