I even started a thread asking the "I'll never vote for _____" people to confess, told them I would ignore them if they confessed, and the HillHaters lined up to get ignored!
'Ignored' and 'post removed' were common responders to my posts after that.

I don't understand why people use ignore lists. I'm too curious to know what people have to say, I guess. And I have this thing called an open mind. Even if every post from certain DUers seem to be obnoxious as hell, there's always a chance they might say something worthwhile.

You can always just not click on the thread, if it's someone you figure only has another shitty comment to make.

76. A couple of days maybe
I've had two or maybe three people on for a few days when they really go over the top, spamming the same super long lists to multiple threads making it difficult or annoying to read the rest of the thread, but never for more than days and I'd doubt ever two at a time. I'd doubt more than three ever.

None now, or most of the time.

Sometimes it's that what we find most offensive we tend to cast away but in the end it's only a part of ourselves that we cannot come to acknowledge, the ignore list holds a key to wholeness.

94. I no longer use the ignore list, but I may be abusing the Hide Thread link
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 09:43 PM by RichardRay
I was using Ignore for awhile, but I emptied the list each Sunday evening. Now I've adopted the practice of reading each new post and making a snap decison on first inspection as to whether it is ever likely to amount to anything more than another food fight. If it has promise it stays, otherwise it gets hidden right away. As a result I have a relatively manageable number of posts to follow, I don't peremptorily discount anyone’s opinion and I have more time to devote to the conversations that have promise.

My concern is with the load the Hide Thread function was designed to carry. At this point I must have several hundred threads hidden in there and I add dozens more each day (each hour?). There has to be some processing load on the board software as it decides what to display to me and what not to. If the level of discourse around here continues to improve it may not be an issue; if it stays the way it has been I could have beaucoup threads in there in the next six weeks!

Anybody know how the software might react to that? I posted a question to admin@democraticunderground.com but haven’t heard back from them.

I have someone on my ignore list, but I don't remember who. I know they posted something that got me really annoyed and I decided to 'teach them a lesson'. I guess I can take them off as I haven't seen any posts that say "ignored" on them since I did that. I must have been in a really bad mood. Usually I just ignore posts that offend me.

on edit: I took him/her off, but I did notice that they had disabled their profile feature.....

127. I don't know how to put someone on ignore
Not on this website or any other.

In that regard, isn't the time allotment or second guessing ever a consideration? I read posts about emptying ignore lists, or criteria for ignore. Hell, the laughable aspect is knowing exactly how many DUers you have on ignore. What, is there a meter, like views of an eBay auction? Perhaps there is. But seems to me it's exponentially more simple to ignore the possibility of ignore. I always prioritize value and ease of mind. A subjective variable like ignore doesn't threaten to qualify.

On sports sites I post on, the debate is year long, vicious and insulting. Almost no one supports the same team I do. Yet the word ignore is used so seldom I'd hate to identify the last time the subject came up.

It screams as a parody to me. Daily multiple threads in the Lounge, petrified of entry into GDP. Then so many ignore based threads in this forum I can skip over them, like the copycat threads in the Lounge.

It reminds me of the silly paranoia in Election Reform. There are dozens of regular posters there who condemn any result other than a landslide in favor of the most progressive candidate as proof of massive fraud. Anyone who doesn't fit is taunted with ignore. That's been going on for years.

128. never have, never will
There is something weird about the concept of putting people on ignore. There is too much great stuff posted here and great posters to keep up with. Who has time to worry about whom to ignore? Ignoring people - well, if they are not saying anything interesting, why not just not read their posts? Putting them on an ignore list seems to me to be self-contradictory. Obviously what the ignored person is saying must be interesting enough to the ignorer if they bother putting them on ignore.

Is it a fear of hearing contrary opinions? What does that say about a person's convictions and sense of confidence in themselves?

Seems to me it is a petty little thing that serves as an emotional outlet for those who have a hankering to silence opposition and suppress freedom of speech.

Even someone who's been generally unhelpful and uninformative might, tomorrow, post something worthwhile. I've preferred to save time through skimming rather than ignoring.

If I were to start using the ignore list, I don't know who'd have more spots on it -- those of the Clinton supporters who infuriate me, or those of my fellow Obama supporters who embarrass me.

On edit: I forgot to credit my subject line -- it's by Gore Vidal, from his novel ''Julian''.
