so, which woman WOULD you vote for?
so many on these boards have announced, loudly, that they would vote for a woman for president, just not Sen. Clinton.

so, my question to all of you is, which woman WOULD you vote for? and why?

edit to say - I'm not one who would refuse to vote for Hillary - just don't buy the "it's suddenly time for a woman and she's the only choice and now or never" thing. It's been overdue for a woman for a long time. She's a peculiar choice if your goal is to promote women for women's sake.

45. I don't think so
If Boxer were the woman running at this moment instead of Clinton, people would be going after her just as viciously as they are Clinton. There are a lot of people here, women too, who are terrified of having a woman for president. That is why so many have jumped on the Obama bandwagon and slimed Hillary unnecessarily and unfairly. He solves a couple of problems for those feeling guilty, he's ethnic and male, and unfortunately for those so deeply misguided, one of those characteristics will hurt him, should he be the nominee, during a general election. He cannot beat that cranky old white man. Hillary can.

74. You say that only because the question is strictly theoretical
I think that any woman, short of the Virgin Mary, would get a raw deal in trying to run for president. And I'm not even sure she would get by without being slimed. The sexism is rampant here, and a year ago, I never would have thought it possible to read the horrible things I have read on this board about Hillary Clinton. If Boxer were running against Obama, she would get it in the face just as much as Clinton has.

69. Please enlighten me...
Why are people terrified of a woman president?

Secondly, after making that statement, you basically say people are afraid of an 'ethnic' candidate. Why is terrible to fear a woman president, but OK to fear an ethnic one?

77. We are a country awash in sexism & racism
Secretly and deep down, many in this country still want a white male in the White House to protect us. They've always been in charge and in my opinion, your average voter is terrified of change. Women are perceived as emotional and/or weak and not possessing the ability to stand up to leaders in other countries when it counts. It's stereotyping, it's wrong and it's sexist, plain and simple, and even those who loudly proclaim themselves as progressives still have a secret fear that anyone but an old white man will fail us and in the end we'll get nuked into oblivion. As for a the problems with a black man, just substitute that where I typed "woman" and it's the same thing. But, if the pair of them teamed up, enough women and non-white voters, and enlightened white male voters ready for change, would propel that ticket into the White House, I'm absolutely convinced of it. If Hillary is the nominee, she as a caucasian woman would stand a much better chance of defeating the McMoron, but I have no faith that Obama as the nominee would be able to win over enough white voters to beat McIdiot. White people are still the majority and the biggest class that turn out to vote. A candidate must be able to get those people out to vote for him/her or they cannot win. This mess is splitting the party, and the only way to get a Democrat into the White House this year is for this white woman to run for president with the black man as her running mate. He's rather young and will have another opportunity to become president, especially if you give people 8 years to get used to the idea. He will win then.

There are hundreds of brilliant, worthwhile women candidates. A few months ago, I'd have said Clinton would have done nicely, though she's way too conservative for my tastes (I didn't support her husband in the primaries either). Now, I'm afraid I have a very different opinion -- still, I'll vote for the Democrat in the GE regardless.

Not a common trait for a Louisiana pol. I lived in NOLA when she was state treasurer, and she did a tremendous job rooting out corruption in the state's finances. It's a shame she didn't win the 1995 governor's race.

I tend to be a bit hawkish by DU standards, so Harman's proclivities aren't as big an issue. On most issues, she's in the Democratic mainstream, and she has a wealth on knowledge on intelligence matters.
