Thousands of Kentuckians won't be able to vote in the Democratic primary.
Thousands of Kentuckians lose right to vote in Democratic primary
By ROGER ALFORD
Associated Press Writer

FRANKFORT, Ky. --Thousands of Kentuckians who have switched political affiliations over the past three months in hopes of voting in May's Democratic presidential primary will instead be barred from casting ballots.

Secretary of State Trey Grayson alerted Kentuckians on Wednesday to a little-known state law that forbids people who change their party registration after December 31 to vote in the May 20 primary.

"We're getting a lot of reports of folks who are either independents or Republicans who are trying to become Democrats in order to vote in the primary," Grayson said. "In the presidential primary, they will not be eligible to vote."

Some 9,000 people have switched parties since Jan. 1. Grayson said voter registration drives by supporters of Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton could inadvertently cause the number of ineligible voters to grow.

Grayson said Obama's campaign requested 5,000 Kentucky voter registration cards earlier this week.

"They're obviously going to do a big push over the next three week to register voters," Grayson said. "I'm sure the Clinton campaign will do the same thing."

Grayson said he wants to let the campaigns know that under Kentucky law, recruiting independents and Republicans to the Democratic Party will be of no benefit in the presidential primary. People registering for the first time, however, will be eligible to vote in the Democratic primary if they register with that party.

2. It seems as though each State has its ways
of making it difficult for its citizens to vote.

13. Actually, most independents in southern states vote for Hillary
Many of these "independents" are conservative white voters.

6. Well I guess Rush Limpballs' idea of getting
repukes to cross over to vote for Hillary to keep the Democratic party from voting in a definitive candidate ain't going to work out so well for the repukes in Kentucky.

8. This should not be a surprise

This actually sounds fishy to me. THis would all have been laid out in the state's Delegate Selection Plan.

On edit: it is in KY's Delegate Selection Plan. This should not be a surprise to anyone.

Participation in Kentucky’s delegate selection process is open to all voters who wish to
participate as Democrats.
A person wishing to register to vote in the state of Kentucky must be a US citizen and
Kentucky resident for at least 28 day; be at least 18 years of age by the next general
election; not be a convicted felon, or if so have their civil rights restored; not have been
judged “mentally incompetent in a court of law; not claim the right to vote anywhere
outside the state of Kentucky; and must register with the Secretary of State by December
31st to vote in the primary
or 28 days before the election if resident has moved.

Shows that the press doesn't do their homework either.
