Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 11:15 PM by Connie_Corleone
I was of voting age when Bill Clinton ran for president. Without the black vote, Clinton wouldn't have been elected president....twice.

Black people have been the most loyal voting bloc in the Democratic Party for over 40 years, even though we have been taken for granted until an election comes up.

There are black people, including my aunts and grandparents, who were living through Jim Crow and assassinations of civil rights leaders.

If some of you have a problem with some black people still having grievances from the not so long ago past (like less than 50 years ago), too friggin' bad.

That's it. I'm done!

77. "Some people say?"
That's always a good argument.

There has been some discussion about the crossover vote, if that is what you mean. But no Clinton supporter has ever said that about the AA vote. We all know perfectly well that the AA vote is a reliable part of our base. Traditionally, the union vote is too. So is the GLBT vote.

No Clinton supporter has said that AA voters are not real Democrats. You are full of shit.

130. NO I have not heard that crap - But should seniors -loyal Dems all - be ignored because young &black
want control of the party?

Is there some sort of entitlement or affirmative action that is being demanded? Is "not racist" the only cause of the party or does "not sexist" have equal standing?

154. Obama has never run AGAINST seniors.
There is no reason why seniors couldn't vote for him. His record on senior issues is just as good as HRC's.

And it's racist to say that "young & black"(?) want control of the party".

They don't want CONTROL, and they have nothing against seniors. They just want an equal say within the party, as they are entitled to have. There's no reason for anyone to find that idea frightening.

178. Let It Die
I loved the thread not long ago where we all agreed to "let it die". To let the issue of Rev Wright die, because it was harmful, a distraction, and a field day for the MSM.
This week's MSM featured flavor is "divided dems will lose election". They want us divided.
So-
Let It Die.

I am an Obama supporter, too. Obama has spoken about the need to be united against the Republicans. He has spoken in clear terms about disagreements within our party. He wants us to Let It Die. We are all on the same team. We are not helping Obama by continuing to hate on each other. We are only helping McCain.

Besides that, it is one thing to hate Hillary. She has done some odious things. But, it igoes too far to hate voters who believe that she is the best choice. Evidently, the choice is less obvious than it appears to some of us, because Obama has been unable to convince a commanding majority and does not currently have the delegates needed to put him over the top. This contest has been many things, but it has not been a route! So, we are hating a lot of people, no matter which camp we choose to hate.

I sometimes think that some of my fellow Obama supporters miss the point of his campaign entirely. He wants to unite us, and focus our energies on repairing this country. I welcome his efforts to restore a higher level of civility and maturity to our national dialogue. He is not interested in hating Hillary supporters. He needs their support. We work against ourselves, as Obama supporters, when we attack those with whom we disagree.

171. Melissa Harris-Lacewell is fanatastic -- !!! Thank you for bringing this ...
to my attention --

Many disappointments with Gloria Steinem --- and this is the worst I've ever heard her.

Harris-Lacewell is a phenomenally sharp thinker --- very interesting --- !!!

Love Amy Goodman, as always ---

Granted, there will be people who will vote against someone's skin color ---
and people who will vote specifically against a female holding office ---

But, I can only hope that MOST of us have judged the two candidates on legitimate issues
-- and found them NOT equal in their merits -- and thereby we found our candidate.

In my case, HRC is a DLC member and that immediately lost her my vote ---

It's just a name. And the only reason people mention it is to invoke some insane and completely unjustified fears.

Obama isn't a Muslim. He isn't a jihadi. And his middle name doesn't freaking matter.

Is that so hard for you to accept?

'just be people and not put themselves in a category'?

'You act as though no one has treated you equally ever.'

No one's saying that white people have not treated non-white people 'equally ever'. Just not all that often. And you expect that non-white people should totally ignore this, and be quite happy with it?

(I'm white by the way).

35. It's like some DU posters have...
"misremembered" the whole Civil Rights era, why that struggle was necessary, hundreds of years of systematic racism, and the lingering yet powerful vestiges of institutional racism in society today. I've really been stunned at the proudly obtuse and arrogantly ignorant posting about race issues from some quarters at DU.

Maybe tomorrow some of these folks will say they "misspoke"? It IS certifiably crazy in here.

the attitude that he enjoys some sort of advantage because he's black. Hello? For how many years have whites enjoyed EVERY advantage BECAUSE THEY'RE WHITE? 51. Exactly.
Hillbots want to make the case that black people are "only voting for Obama because he's black." My response is, no, did it ever occur to you that maybe, JUST MAYBE, black voters might be gravitating toward Obama because the Clintons insulted and demeaned them?

An example of that old "white privilege" is that I'll never have to have an ex-president tell my entire community that we're not smart enough to vote based on issues and that we only vote based on race, as evidenced by the fact that "Jesse Jackson won here (aka 'this black state') in '84 and '88."

Newsflash, Clintons: You take black people (or any people, for that matter) for granted, you exploit the goodwill you earned from them before and show that you never REALLY gave a shit about them in the first place, and yes, they will turn on you. You were NOT the "first black president," Bill. Don't you forget it.

Obama, on the other hand, is already my president. If he's the first black president, that's fine too. But much more important to me is that he's the first president in my lifetime who I can actually believe in and be proud of.

58. YES.
"My response is, no, did it ever occur to you that maybe, JUST MAYBE, black voters might be gravitating toward Obama because the Clintons insulted and demeaned them?"

I refused to choose between them until SC. Yes, I cried when Obama gave that speech in IA, but I was HAPPY for her when she won NH, because yes, the media was belittling her, and I was sick of it. Yay Hillary! And up until that point, I defended her on this board. But then came SC, and that was the beginning of the end. The worse it got, the more I leaned towards Obama. The mocking and the "skies opening" and the "shame on you!" was the last straw.

And people call that "cultish" and "Kool-Aid" drinking. Uh-huh.

195. I am a little tired of the double standard
If White people vote for Clinton, its assumed its because they are looking at two candidates, and see one is better.

If black people Vote for Obama, its assumed because they look at two candidates, and see one is black.

to be fair, if women vote for Clinton its assumed its because she is a woman.

Its all BS.

It is extremely difficult to participate and not use words that would be close to rage sometimes.

A big hug to those that have taken the time to walk in the shoes of someone of another race.

As I've said many times, I'm not voting for Obama because he is Black ,I am voting for Obama because he is reaching out to everyone.
He doesn't seek to be "the first Black President." He seeks to be President for ALL the people.

40. and I am a white Jew who is doing my best to get Obama elected
I lived through the 50's and 60's, and saw first hand what you described. I also experienced prejudice first hand from being labeled a "Christ killer", or "Jew Boy", or "How people got Jewed".

My parents lived through Charles Coughlin's anti-Semitic radio rants, and Linbergh blaming the Jews for WWII. My Father was the victim of Jewish quotas from getting into medical school.

My parents were excluded from jobs, private clubs, and living in certain neighborhoods.

They experienced hotels which had signs "no dogs or Jews allowed", and because of THESE experience I was brought up to respect ALL PEOPLE

I would venture that 99.9% of the people here at DU recognize what the black experience in America is all about. I would also venture that most here on DU that are old enough, white or black were PART OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, whose birth came when a woman named Rosa Parks refused to be treated like a second class citizen

177. Both Clinton and Obama are corporatists.
And as usual in our debased system, it's a question of which poison one can tolerate.

The Clinton brew is too toxic for consideration.

Regardless of what starry-eyed little Polyannas think, Obama may not be markedly different. But she's beyond the pale -- pro-empire, anti-worker. That's enough to rule her out.

In short, we're back to 2000: Nader's by far the best choice.

Oprah pushed Obama on the country. No one would know who the hell he is without Oprah.

All I'm saying and all I've ever said about Obama is that he is NOT a liberal. Oprah is preferable even though she's a closet rethuglican too.

Excuse me if I'd like to see this country run by an actual liberal/progressive candidate who will make some real and lasting changes and kick some rethuglican a$$!

Instead with Obama & Hillary too we will see more a$$ kissing of the corporate powers that be in order to keep it all status quo.

well fucking said! One of my good friends from junior high and high school is black. Any time we'd hang out together at the mall or restaurants, he'd get treated differently. Waitress refills my drink without me even asking but my friend would have to ask several times before finally getting a refill. Go into a clothing store and the sales person would immediately start asking me if I need any help and not even address my friend. I've called people out on this behavior before because it's pretty damn clear what's going on. But then the shit really hit the fan for me when he got kicked out of the Air Force Academy simply because a white girl accused him and several other black football players of hurting her. She fell down some stairs at a house party. My friend was not even in the same damn room as her when it happened. She blamed them and they all got kicked out of the school no questions asked. That was by the government itself. Talk about a load of shit. Oh, BTW...I'm only 22 so the stuff I'm talking about is very recent in our nation's history.

Ah, it's just swell that we have that settled now.

And if some of you have a problem with some women having grievances from the not so long ago past (like, less than 5 minutes ago), then too friggin' bad.

You got problems, I got problems, the "retards" that some Obama supporter referred to got problems, the Jews got problems, the gays got problems.

What we need is a black, female, Jewish, gay, "retard" to run for president. Then we can all feel good about ourselves for voting for someone we really just don't like and who probably doesn't like us either. We're all so cool like that.

97. "even though we have been taken for granted until an election comes up"
Is your point that all white Democrats are two faced liars or that all black Democrats are ignorant suckers? Because when you make broad statements like "even though we have been taken for granted until an election comes up" those are the only two conclusions we can draw.

I'd have a heaping plate of anger and hatred if I were in your shoes. I can't understand how anyone can think it would be easy to just "get over it" when your whole race has been treated as practically sub-human for centuries. It's actually only been a few decades that there hasn't been widespread government-sanctioned racism in this country and it still exists in pockets today. I want things to change, but until they do, I don't blame you for your anger at all.

106. Don't quit or give up Connie_Corleone...
One thing I read recently made sense -- the article said one reason this campaign is so emotional and at times caustic is because it pits two oppressed groups against each other. Each group has a lot at stake in this. You can see this in the fact that about 90% of blacks are voting for Obama -- who can blame them? Not me.

But I am a woman who has witnessed decades of discrimination and violence perpetrated against women. Progress has been made to change this but there is still a long way to go. That's not the reason I hope Senator Clinton will become the nominee, things in this country need to change and policies that reflect our entire population, not just the male half. As Sally Field said, "If women ran the country there wouldn't be anymore Goddamn wars." I'd be just as enthusiastic if she had said "black women".

Don't quit! Keep posting, people will listen to what you say.

while insisting that others should not. One day people will wake up and see that there really is no difference. I'm sorry if you find that verity disagreeable. And it depends on how you deal with the grievances you mention. When that anger is directed at those who had nothing to do with Jim Crow, etc, then that's a problem. I'm no more responsible than you are.

Pretending there is no difference solves nothing. There is a difference. Incarceration statistics show it, economic indicators show it, this primary is making it impossible to miss. Anyone that pretends otherwise is only fooling themselves.

It's a subtle kind of racism that allows you to continue believing that the race you belong to is somehow superior to other races. What you're actually referring to is the arbitrary, man-made, perceived differences between races. Though the examples you give are good examples of this misperception, notice that their implications are one sided, the victimization of some African Americans by whites. For example, instead of using "incarceration statistics" as an example of systematic racism, it'd be more appropriate to discuss why crime rates in African American communities tend to be higher than in other communities and the importance of education, jobs, and economic independence. Then you can more accurately get to how these misconceptions about race hurt us all. It is us who create the illusion of differences that cause people to treat those of another race differently from those of their own race. You can find the same sort of dynamics in parts of Africa. It's not because people are black or white. It's because they're people, like it or not.

120. I admit, I was very appalled when I first heard Rev. Wright's remarks but then I was mostly just sad
I do see where AA can still have a lot of issues, especially the older ones. Personally, I have found that when I was angry with somebody, if I forgave them and moved on, it set me free. I really have tried to do my best toward the AA community and I think at least some other WA's are confused about how to proceed to make things better. Just because I'm not wild about this AA candidate doesn't mean I wouldn't be wild about another one. Heck, I caucused for Jesse Jackson as long as we're telling who we voted for. I truly think that the problems I have with Obama are the same I would have with someone with the same qualifications and background irregardless of their color. I don't feel like he has been very good to the AA community and may be "using" them for his own purposes now. I hope that I am wrong in that regard.

Were you able to see his wife on Larry King? She is from a very middle income background and I don't think she will ever be able to forget what it is like to grow up in that community.
Especially if when you step out of that community, you are in trouble for your skin being dark.

I also have a tremendous sense that she is haunted abt what might happen to her husband if he does get nominated. there was a certain wistfulness in her eyes when Larry King mentioned "the real reason" that Colin Powell's wife didn't let him run.
I really think that Oback is risking his neck running in this race.

Hillary is played off as being a "middle class" American. However her daddy was an executive. They lived in a very exclusive neighborhood. She had anything she wanted as a kid, and her family never had to worry.

Obama's wording in his speeches is always "We - us -we" Senator Clinton is much more fond of "I -me -I."

To me, she smacks of the same elitism that Mitt Romney has. Teh same psychic vibe - I came from the right place, and I did the right things, now understand that unless you are my better you cannot stop me.

In my life span, I've volunteered and voted for Mondale/Ferraro, Dukakis, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Harry Reid, Russ Feingold, Paul Wellstone, Herb Kohl, Mark Dayton - the list goes on.

This country and DU too still struggle to engage in a robust dialogue about racial identity in American society. We walk on eggshells and lack a willingness to sustain that conversation. The campaign has brought these issues to the front in a healthy way.

I'll work in my community to elect progressive candidates that have an open mind. As Obama says, it takes personal action to address the issues successfully.

Thanks for your post, Connie.

Telling black people to "get over it"

I remember when my lily white neighborhood in Chicago integrated. (circa late '60's) I was talking to the African American woman who moved in next door. My parents were buying a home in the suburbs - interest rate 8%.

She had just signed off on a 14 per cent mortgage. It meant that both she and her husband worked, and they considered themselves to be lucky if they were only working one job a piece.

Meanwhile my family did nicely on Dad's salary.

Not having a profile doesn't really mean much. I almost didn't make one myself as I'm a very private person. Maybe he is a troll, but the lack of a profile is no real indicator.

Also, as I said, I feel the same way he does, only about Hillary. Exact same feeling otherwise. With your logic that could simply be reduced to being an Obama talking point about Hillary. But it's not, it's how I feel. I'd love to see a woman in office, just not her. Both points are totally valid.

With all the blatant trolling going on I just have a hard time jumping to that conclusion based on the post you were responding to. Just saying something we don't like doesn't make one a troll, and I haven't seen this poster doing anything close to what many others are doing, on both sides.
