Slogans you can Xerox - Why is everyone stealing Obama's fire??? |
|
Now, I know Obama used a few lines from Deval Patrick's speeches, and I know how stole "Yes we can" from Cesar Chavez and Bob the Builder, and yes, "Fire it up! Ready to go!" comes from an experience he had at an event.
But these are all signature lines from his campaign, which he has put to exceptional use, and I'm totally fired up about them. I swear the other day I finished painting my living room and added some accents, and when I was done I stood back, looked at it and said "Yes we can!"
So What the hell is with everyone else stealing his thunder?
McCain and Clinton are using "We're fired up and ready to go!"
Clinton's new chant is "Yes we will"
And now McCain is saying that he's "The American President Americans have been waiting for", using Obama's "We are the ones we have been waiting for." (which granted was inspirted by a line Maria Shriver used at one of his rallies.
What is Obama the freaking field tester for slogans other people just lift like there's no tomorrow?
"Yes we can" seems to be working for Obama, so why don't we change it a little "Yes we will" and run with it.

1. The chant thing isn't good for Hillary. |
|
She always does it with an angry edge, so I sounds more like a threat than an empowering slogan.

3. I honestly can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not. |
|
It really annoyed me when he was using (in Spanish) Si Se Puede, AFTER the farm workers had endorsed Hillary.
There actually is such a thing as a phrase being in the public domain, too.
And if you want to talk truly annoying, those "Got Hope?" stickers where he is stealing the "Got Milk" line are obnoxious.

14. Of course not. But since the UFW has been using the slogan since the 1970s |
|
and they endorsed Hillary, it's hardly fair to accuse her of stealing her slogan from Obama!

8. I'm not being sarcastic, though I can definitely see the post being read that way. |
|
There's using public domain and there's stealing, IMO. It's one thing to use a slogan, but when it's already in use by another active candidate, it just seems like you're trying to ride on his/her coattails, and makes you seem *very* unoriginal, IMO
Got Hope is kinda funny, though the whole "got milk" campaign being used by everyone makes it kinda old and tired, agreed.

9. Yeah, but from an *active* campaign? |

I can understand using something already out there, but something that your opponent is using? Seems tacky.
But maybe it's just me.
