7. Better question is, why is he quoting an obvious wingnut
source? Did you even bother to read any of the rest of the articles?

9. Are you kidding!!
Langston Hughes is widely recognized as one the great American poets.

He could not have picked a better man to quote from.

14. Guts up, baby
You guys want a fight, but when JK gives it to you, whaaa!!!

We are fighting the same fight today that Langston Hughes fought. It's beautiful. Use his words as fuel, every day, to take the fight to those who would destroy our country.

2. Their critique is so devoid of thinking
it's pathetic. For them t's all about what kind of evil association they can concoct. Their premise is a stretch and a half, and no one will bother to wait around for them to make the idiotic arguement.

3. Figured they would
But what this slogan and poet really bring to light is the dangers of a government out of control. Langston Hughes was wrongly accused during the McCarthy years, just like so many are being stifled, accused and labeled today. This slogan works on so many levels, I hope the campaign has the guts to stick to it.

22. Good point. If this gets flogged, Kerry could point out that this type of
McCarthyism is exactly the fear and paranoia destroying this country. Sowed courtesy of the Republican Party.

8. No one will care that would otherwise support Kerry under any conditions.
So who cares? This is just fodder for them. "Commie" is lot less of an insult than "Nazi": and there is a certain Republican family with ties to Nazism in the past. Perhaps Michael Moore should make a movie about that alone.

10. McCarthyism at work in the GOP. I love the slogan. I printed out
the whole poem and made 20 copies to share at our May 22 Kerry Fundraising party. It is time for us to throw this bigotry back in their slimy, bigoted faces.

13. Laura Bush lauds Stalinist poet!
:wow:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/firstlady/initiatives/harlemrenaissanceremarks.html

Langston Hughes lamented the inequalities around him in "I, Too, Sing America;" and in "Harlem (2)", he asked, "What happens to a dream deferred?"

The words of these writers opened us to the truth at a time when it most needed to be heard. For instance, in Hughes' poem "Freedom", he writes:

Some folks think
By burning churches
They burn
Freedom.
Some folks think
By imprisoning me
They imprison
Freedom.
Some folks think
By killing a man
They kill
Freedom.
But Freedom
Stands up and laughs
In their faces
And says,
No -
Not so!
No!

15. Thanks! -- my letter to the editor
Subject : The Insider -- Hughes as a Commie
Email : bailesj@mindspring.com
Letter : I guess we should consider Laura Bush a nut to as she as well as everyone in the entire literary universe lauds Langston Hughes as a Great American Poet.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/firstlady/initiatives/harlemrenaissanceremarks.html

She did not just pick up one phrase in the message as a slogan that commie-loving woman actually posted the entire poem -- from the site:

Langston Hughes lamented the inequalities around him in "I, Too, Sing America;" and in "Harlem (2)", he asked, "What happens to a dream deferred?"

The words of these writers opened us to the truth at a time when it most needed to be heard. For instance, in Hughes' poem "Freedom", he writes:

Tell me ain't so! Is she a crazy first lady who love commies, Laura Bush?

23. more...
so far this is still only in far-out RW rags. I have the feeling it would be in the mainstream media by now if they didn't know we were paying attention.

http://www.mensnewsdaily.com/archive/m-n/mariani/2004/mariani052304.htm

Yes, Langston Hughes was a Communist, and his poetry strongly reflected that belief system. He is described by James Smethurst in his 1999 book The New Red Negro: The Literary Left and African American Poetry, 1930-1946 <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/019512054X/qid=1085323644/sr=8-5/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i5_xgl14/103-8468320-7690235?v=glance&s=books&n=507846> as the author of "revolutionary or militant poems aimed at an audience defined largely by the cultural institutions of the CPUSA and the Comintern." Hughes was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953 to account for his membership in the Communist Party USA, but managed to convince the members <http://www.galegroup.com/free_resources/bhm/bio/hughes_l.htm> that "the pro-Communist works he had published no longer represented his thinking." Unfortunately for his social life, "Communists bitterly resented the way he abandoned professed members of the party, including W. E. B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson, whom Hughes had lauded in earlier decades." Hughes had coldly abandoned his principles to save his writing career. This is the theme for the Kerry campaign? These are the values that "people think makes this country strong" -- anger, bitterness, cynicism and Communism? If we ask, "what people think that?" would we be told that it's none of our business <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4531796>?

Well, at least it does express the attitude of the anti-war activists Kerry once represented as a leader of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War <http://www.wintersoldier.com/>, and those who still oppose freedom and democracy for the Iraqi people <http://users.lmi.net/zombie/sf_rally_march_20_2004/idiots/>, while advocating Communism for all <http://users.lmi.net/zombie/sf_rally_march_20_2004/communism/>.

25. No one is going to care where the slogan came from any more than they
care that the pledge of allegience was written by a socialist. Besides, who is going to take Moony Times Insight magazine's word for it as to the origin of the slogan? The fact that the Moonys are groping around for "silver bullet winning issues" like this tells you all you need to know about what they think about the Shrub's chances in November.
