Tonight my brother, the republican, informed me he's voting for Obama.
I was truly stunned.

He's always identified as a republican, but he's no lucianne ditto-head type. He teaches his Sunday School class. He calls 'em like he sees 'em, and he listens to all sides--for the most part--before making up his mind on things.

We can disagree and debate politics without either of us feeling like we were 'attacked' so that's always nice.

He's always voted for the R's, but he wasn't pulling my leg about voting for Obama.

I was kind of :wow: so I had to tell someone!

11. He said he didn't like what McCain was saying on the issues
but I didn't pry further (not yet). I was trying to be somewhat nonchalant because I didn't want him to think I was as stunned as I was.

I'm wondering if it's McCain's 100 more years in Iraq statement. I'm going to ask him more about it later.

17. If you do discuss it with him, please let us know what he says. I find this very interesting
and heartening, as well, and would love to know his reasons.

5. Republicans that I've argued with for decades are telling me the same thing.
Obama is transcending politics. Americans like him. He's our new start.

Thanks for your message, Lex.

It's happening a lot now.

19. My one and only Republican friend (dates back to 8th grade) called Obama "brilliant."
I was stunned. She was defending Dumbass Dubya as recently as last year.

8. This is a great thing. Yeah for you and your brother!
I have great hopes that under an Obama presidency this country will make great progress and people will align on issues and work together on this instead of remaining polarized by labels.

Did you offer him a latte?

9. Thanks! There are many like him. I know many personally.
I think such people as well as the independents going for Obama are
going to be the decisive votes in the GE. Most of these people, according
to all I hear and read, would not vote for Hillary. I don't understand how
there is any question about Obama being more electable.

16. I really don't think he's going to change his party affiliation
yet and I do think it's mainly about the General Election. At this point anyway.

14. Thank you for sharing that :)
My Bro and I have argued over Bush for years. He has voted Republican all his life. I think alot of his stance has came from the fact that he is Career Navy. Over the last few years all he will say is, he has to support him because GW is his CIC. Now that he is on his way out the door, he has admitted to me things that he did not like about him. Shocking, these were things that he argued about with me intensely. I guess the Military is the last to speak out, I don't know.

He told me that he will be voting for Obama this time around. At first he wasn't sure, he said that he didn't know Obama's stances on the Military. I pointed him in the right direction to reassure him, what his opinions and policies were. He says he has his vote now.

22. I'm in the same boat
I'm a Casey Democrat who has generally supported the Republicans over the last few elections, as I was completely turned off by Bill's escapades during his tenure as POTUS. However, I feel Obama will return a sense of decency and decorum to the White House.

24. Glad to hear it
I am the only democrat among my cousins. Even my neocon cousin and I can talk politics although she does get upset when I call Cheney evil. I don't know who most of them are voting for with the one exception who will vote for McCain.

I trust my republican family but I have such a mistrust for the rest of them since 2000. I am one of the nay sayers when it comes to crossing over and I am glad to hear an example of a republican making the right choice for once.:)

25. So are my brother and his wife
The ironic thing is that a few years ago we had quite a "discussion" about Bush vs. Kerry during the holidays. (I was a little heated that anyone could still support that idiot.) We had to agree not to discuss politics at our family gatherings anymore.

So last month he calls me up and out of the blue tells me that he is voting for Obama and is surprised at himself for actually being pumped up about a candidate. My jaw about hit the ground.

Now here's the irony: he complained that when he goes to visit his wife's family, it's really difficult biting his tongue because they support McCain and/or Clinton. I found that quite amusing and satisfying at several levels.}(

26. I'm hammering on my whole family to GOBAMA! Many are GOP, none are dittoheads.

I think I've gotten through to many of them.

And, it's not just voting for Obama that's the main factor. It's that they're beginning to realize they've been totally had.

32. I know how you feel.
I had this same shock several months ago when my conservative brother-in-law declared he's voting Obama. He's fed up with the Republicans and thinks we need a Democrat to get things "back in balance." Although he's not a hardline conservative, he normally votes Republican or Independent. This is the first time I've ever heard of him voting Democratic. My liberal sister (his wife) says she's been working on him for years and he's finally starting to see the light.
