Libertarians: Bush's Nader?
Party hopes to have impact on fall election

By MATTHEW C. QUINN

Published on: 05/26/04

Georgians may never hear much about Allen Buckley, even though he's a candidate for one of the state's top offices.

Buckley, 43, a Smyrna attorney, freely acknowledges that his campaign as the Libertarian Party's candidate for U.S. Senate is a long shot.

"The problem is that a lot of people think Libertarians are off-the-wall," he says.

But as more than 800 delegates gather in downtown Atlanta today for a five-day national convention that will nominate Libertarian presidential and vice presidential candidates, there's talk that the 33-year-old party may be coming into its own.

1. I could see something like that happening in N.H.
N.H. votes strongly Republican, but it also has some strong libertarian leanings.

To those moderate conservatives who read the papers, Bush's non-conservatism is really shaking up the GOP foundation. Who knew that the party of small gov't was also for fat, bloated gov't spending, size, and scope?

Kerry is relatively well known in N.H., and he has a shot at winning it this year, because Bush's single-mindedness has cost him among his own party. A third party like the Libertarians could shake a few shakable voters.

2. N.H. is very Libertarian leaning...
Which makes little sense as to why they vote Republican. I'd think that a libertarian state would take somebody who supports social liberties over somebody who's only libertarian position is a tax cut for the rich. But anyway, I think that NH is going Kerry this time.
