10. the other good thing
is that Dr. King inspired a nation to move toward racial equality.

And even right wing blow hard politicians that might have fought or do fight us on it, at least have to recognize that it is no longer acceptable to be against civil rights for all Americans. (at least not in obvious ways for them....)

He actually was honest enough to admit he voted against it. Of course I only think it's good he got booed, not that he decided to be honest about something. In my book, he'd have to do much more than tell a truth in order to make up for the mountain of lies he's told in his career.

31. Sadly, no, but it's got a twisted history
South Carolina finally made it a state holiday in 2000.

Arizona's legislature refused to make it a state holiday, but Governor Bruce Babbit signed an executive order creating a holiday. When Evan Mecham took over the next year, he canceled the holiday, telling--and I promise I'm not making this up--African Americans in the state "You people don't need another holiday. What you need are jobs."

After boycotts, Mecham finally agreed to sign the holiday as an unpaid holiday. There was a legal issue involved--since the legislature had not passed it, no state funds could go to pay for it, meaning state employees could not be paid for it.

Some states call it something else, like Civil Rights Day, and some used to combine it with Robert E Lee's birthday, for some unfathomable reason. Well, some racist reason, anyway.

Once Reagan signed the holiday into federal law, all federal agencies had to observe it--the delays were in states making it a state holiday. State and federal holidays don't have to agree with each other, and frequently don't. For instance, George Washington's birthday is a federal holiday, but many states call it "Presidents' Day" instead.

And don't think too well of Reagan for signing it. He opposed the bill and swore he would veto it, but Congress passed it with a veto-proof majority. For some reason he signed it after that.

More than you needed to know, and more than I usually know, but I did some research on MLK and Washington days recently.

27. McCain's problematic race record

McCain's problematic race record

by kos
Fri Apr 04, 2008 at 11:10:37 AM PDT
John McCain voted against the Martin Luther King holiday in 1983. Asked about today, he made a startling revelation:

(Video)

<...>

McCain was 32 when King died. He was 47 when he voted against the holiday. He claims he didn't know about MLK that entire time? That it was merely "an issue"? The reporter is right, this wasn't an issue, it was basic knowledge of American history.

Yet even at 47, McCain still had a lot of "learning" to do before he'd change his mind on MLK, as Steve Benen notes:

If McCain "began to learn" and "studied" after his opposition to the King holiday in ‘83, he was a very slow learner. Four years later, he didn’t fight against a governor or his own party; he endorsed the governor’s move to eliminate a King holiday.

Six years after his House vote he began supporting a state holiday, but still opposed a federal King holiday. Eleven years after his vote, he tried to strip federal funding from the MLK Federal Holiday Commission. Seventeen years after his vote, McCain publicly endorsed South Carolina’s right to fly the confederate flag over its statehouse.

Now, in the interest of fairness, it’s worth noting that McCain ended up, years after the fact, in the right place, and reversed himself on practically all of his previous positions. Better late than never, I suppose.

Now McCain claims he fought his own governor, Benen (who I trust more), says he didn't. So does ABC News' Jake Tapper:

In Arizona, a bill to recognize a holiday honoring MLK failed in the legislature, so then-Gov. Bruce Babbitt, a Democrat, declared one through executive order.

In January 1987, the first act of Arizona's new governor, Republican Evan Mecham, was to rescind the executive order by his predecessor to create an MLK holiday. Arizona's stance became a national controversy.

McCain backed the decision at the time.

So he's a liar. And worse than that, it speaks volumes that he considers MLK not a giant of American (and world) history, but "an issue". I'm sure McCain, Trent Lott, and George Allen would all agree on that.
