Poll question: Should We Amputate GDP Already? It's Getting Gangrenous...
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 09:29 AM by Bonobo
If it were possible to get rid of GDP in such a way that the venom did not move to GD, would you be in favor of some way of reducing the huge amounts of in-fighting here?

There are bound to be those who still want to go at it tooth and nail, but I think if we put it into a Topic Forum or something, it would be a lot less rabid and brutal. I think that we could once again discuss politics in GD (this IS a political forum after all) and the ADMINS could simply get back in the practice of policing GD for flamebait.

We need to lower the volume here, I think, and it will have to start with the Admins recalibrating our understanding of what is acceptable discourse for THEIR PRIVATE WEBSITE CALLED DU.

So what do you all say?

3. Too early for a vote, until there's a plan for what to replace GD:P with.
But for now, GD:P has been amputated. Its very existence isolates it pretty well, and anyone who disagrees is perfectly able to avoid it.

Easy--right?

If it's good enough to obscure 9/11, I say it's good enough to obscure this.

15. I don't get it. You just want to change GD:P to a Topic forum?
What would this accomplish?

10. I know some people will flip out when I say this. But what the heck...
I think the reality of GDP is not as bad as the perception of GDP.

Yeah, I know, "Perception is reality," yada yada yada. Obviously, there is plenty of stupidity and venom. I don't need to be convinced of that.

But I think the truly surprising thing about GDP is how easy it is to find posts and discussions that are interesting, insightful, and informative. Even, dare I say it? Exciting. I'll admit it: Out of all the forums on DU, this is the one I visit most. Clearly I am not the only one. There's always something going on.

I don't know. Maybe the negative stuff doesn't bother me as much because I don't have a strong preference between the two candidates. It just seems like typical campaign hyperbole. Not personal -- just politics.

13. Yeah. I keep coming back, too, although I suspect it's sometimes like witnessing a train wreck.
You just can't turn away.

What bothers me most about the negative stuff is that I'm not a negative nor a confrontational person. I enjoy a debate on issues, but much prefer a civil conversation and reasoned arguments. I don't appreciate the name calling and flaming that some posters here seem to revel in and I've seen that type of behavior from supporters of both candidates. It has ruined a lot of good discussions.

16. Sure. People participate exactly as much as they want.
I have long suspected that some of the perception is manufactured just for the fun of complaining about GDP. Even that serves a purpose, though.

If this closes discussion will only go elsewhere. There are various sections to discuss politics in other, than this one. I don't really see any reason to limit debate in what is democracy. Democracy only works by the eoncouragement of debate.

14. I'd really rather network with my own kind, actually
instead of coming in here and getting pissed off

maybe I'll dig out some dough and join... haven't found a reason to yet

then I could participate in the candidate's groups

18. Oh please
GD:P is the best place on the web to get instant news, and an idea of what's happening with the campaigns. At least you don't have to wade through reams of disingenuous editorial bullshit to find out what's really going on.

I tell you, Igor, we can save it! If we wash the parts down with this special elixir then connect them to the lightning rods, take this decayed old brain (the one that says McCain) and wait for the lightning to strike!

Bwahahahahahahaha!!!
