George Washington would not have plunged the country that he fought so hard to keep together into a civil war.

always in a hurry. I foresee GWBushcorp wrapping themselves in the sepulchre of the Reagan legacy after a week or three of public mourning glorification. In which case the externals of the campaign will be significantly different than they have been for the last 5 weeks. It could very well be Kerry vs Reagan, if the media complies.

...after all, he's dead.
Cmon, Reagan vs Anybody is Reagan in a landslide, with the exception of FDR. I didn't like him any more than you did, but nationwide he was beloved and believed in.

Bill Clinton was more skilled as not only a campaigner but as a politcian. Clinton would have beaten him. And lest we not forget he left office with a higher approval rating, weathering the Whitewater-Starr report fiascos and ultimately an unjustified impeachment.

6. Kerry is a great debater |
|
John Kerry right now vs. the Reagan of 1980?
Kerry would take ol' Ronnie to the woodshed.
and unlike Carter in 1980, Kerry is a great closer. Carter choked down the stretch.

Clinton VS Reagan would be even better, but Kerry VS Reagan would still be good.

13. The near certainty of losing California = Reagan victory |
|
That's a massive electoral flop that would be almost impossible to overcome.
Realistically, I don't think we could have ever beaten Reagan, unless the nation's political leanings were 5 points, or thereabouts, tilted in our favor.
Clinton/Reagan would be an excruciating experience and campaign, superior on every issue and able to express that for a change, but the dimwits in the "middle" defaulting to the "there you go again" simpleton.

14. Actually, RR brought out the "worst" in us. |
|
It wasn't until Clinton that we were challenged to be the "best" that we could be. Some of us took the challenge, the dittoheads didn't even hear it.

17. Reagan in a landslide - |
|
Kerry would carry the Northeast but not New Hampshire. In today's political climate he'd have difficulty carrying much else aside from the Pacific Northwest. Reagan would probably take California. Given recent New Jersey numbers we've seen, Reagan might carry that state also. Kerry might hang on to Wisconsin and Minnesota, but Reagan would take Iowa, Missouri, the whole South, everything in the mid-west save for Illinois. A complete rout.

Reagan vs. Kerry?
Reagan
Reagan vs. Clinton?
Hmm, Reagan would appeal to people's baser instincts (like homophobia and racism). He'd probably win that way.
That would be a great match up though.
Also REagan vs. FDR would be something else too.
