Remember when *all* of us hated the use of wedge issues in elections? |
|
Remember when we would feel that facts and the issues were in the Democrats' favor, and then sure enough the republicans would flood the airwaves and cable channels with wedge issues for no other reason than to rile up voters to vote against rather than for a candidate, party, or ideology?
Remember?
Do the Democrats, and other fair-minded people on this board remember? Do you remember feeling the frustration because people who clearly were voting against their own self interest because of the unseemly use of wedge issues? Do you remember your anger at the media for neglecting the real issues that mattered to the public in order to pander to their deepest fears?
I remember. I think that Senator Obama remembers, too.
If you remember, recommend this thread.

2. I'm don't give a lot of props to the "bitter" controversy, |
|
but a "wedge issue," in my definition, is a divisive, emotionally-driven issue such as gay marriage and abortion. Something that appeals to a person's emotions and not his or her intellect.
I know this is emotional, but I think this is more of a red herring than a wedge issue... because it really isn't much of an issue, honestly.

4. But don't you feel as though |
|
it was these wedge issues that Senator Obama was eluding to that set off this latest "outrage"?

I think what he was referring to is the reason why poor whites tend to vote against their best interests by voting Republican. Consider what they see from their perspectives: they don't think "guns, gays, and God" are wedge issues at all; they earnestly believe that they are more important than, say, enhanced unemployment benefits. I think Obama was making a cultural observation.

16. I imagine that people of all ethnicities have voted on wedge issues |

I see it as a cultural observation only in as much as the principles that Al Gore laid out in 'The Assault On Reason' was a rumination of cultural observations.
edited for a silly spelling error.

3. So why doesn't Obama slam Hillary for apparently not knowing what wedge issues are? |
|
this pisses me off about Obama's campaign. They seem incapable of releasing inflammatory statements that would damage Hillary and get airplay.

6. I trust the campaign of Senator Obama |
|
I am very limited as to my ability as a writer. What I am suggesting is that it was the "typical" wedge issues that Obama was eluding to that is being blow-up into something that it is not.

7. So he should have killed this yesterday/today. All it'd take would be Obama asking Hillary |
|
why she doesn't know what Wedge Issues are and how the GOP use them to divide Americans.

9. There is a week and some change before the PA primary |
|
I would bet my bottom dollar that ads are being shot right now that will make her look quite foolish for taking this road. Okay, truth be told, my fingers are crossed that that is what is occurring. Stil, I'm letting my money ride on the winner. :)

15. Obama basically explained EXACTLY why Karl Rove was able to win in 2000 and 2004.... |
|
He exposed the Rove play book....
Maybe that is why Hillary and McCain are so outraged? They wanted to keep it under wraps.
