Clinton Campaign Hopes “Bitter” Comments Stick - CBS
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 11:40 AM by WillyT
<snip>

GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- Just hours after the now infamous “bitter” comments made by Barak Obama surfaced in news reports, Hillary Clinton’s campaign retooled their message from top to bottom. She slammed Obama on the stump and her campaign has been pushing Obama’s comments behind the scenes.

Her husband is getting in on the act as well. At a rally in rural North Carolina hosted by President Bill Clinton, a few dozen people were seen wearing stickers that read “I’m Not Bitter!” When asked about the stickers, a Clinton campaign spokesman said they were printed up by the campaign’s North Carolina team and distributed. Clinton staffers initially denied having printed them up.

Obama’s comments have attracted copious media attention, and they are being interpreted by many in political circles as a serious gaffe. Obama said today he regretted the comments, but stopped short of apologizing for them.

It is clear that the Clinton campaign sees Obama’s comments as an opportunity to make some headway in the race. A campaign aide said Obama’s comments are powerful because they came out of his own mouth. Similarly, the media attention given to Clinton’s Bosnia blunder hurt her in the polls in Pennsylvania, and with the primary now 10 days away, the Clinton campaign hopes the same will happen to their opponent.

It may be just a matter of time before the campaign starts mass producing “I’m Not Bitter!” signs to be handed out at rallies.

3. No one I know is insulted at the bitter comment.
They are mostly saying "hell yeah I'm bitter", followed with a diatribe about Washington politics the last 20 years. Obama addressed a real issue which goes hand in hand with the hope message.

19. Are you?
Why did you attach the word redneck? Do you associate guns with rednecks? You worried someone might think you are a redneck?

10. I've Never Despised Her So Much
If you wanted proof that Billary will do anything ... anything ... to destroy Obama, this is it.

Painting another U.S. Senator of the Democratic Party and a fellow contender for the presidency as an elitist and out-of-touch is a total capitulation to McCain/Bush.

To see old Hill slugging shots of whiskey, and talkin' up her commitment to guns and God, is pure Atwater/Rove. It is now clearly apparent that she and her husband are perfectly willing, even eager, to adopt McCain-Lieberman political tactics if that will get them what they want -- good of the country be damned.

Anyone who has read "Dreams From My Father" knows what gutter politics it is to take this line of attack against Obama.

How any true progressive can rationalize Billary's using the 'guns and God' wedge issues is just beyond me ... I thought that was exactly what we have been so sick of for the past 27 years.

If Billary is going to talk like Bush and Cheney, then really, she should just become a Republican.

11. I'm wondering how is this going to play out
in Washington on Monday. I think this may be the final straw for her in terms of Super Delegates and what not. I couldn't imagine the party elders are sitting around thinking that this crap is good for the party. I bet Nancy Pelosi is pissed off along with many others. I don't think she is doing herself any favors with this. You know those bumper stickers are going to be used by McCain when her tired ass is gone from this race. How is she going to show her face in the Senate? I could only imagine that a opponent for her Senate seat is frothing at the mouth with her talk about being pro-gun.

13. Here's the way I look at it:
The decent bitter folks are going to recognize and appreciate what BO said.

The hateful, bigoted, bitter folks who cling to their guns and despise anyone different from them, were not going to vote for BO anyway.

The decent, bitter folks are going to recognize that Clinton is bullshitting them and that she's as bad as George W. Bush telling them to go shopping.

15. She's the epitomy of bitter...
she's projecting I'm afraid...

I'm worried about Hillary. Throwing back shots of whiskey last night while chugging beer? She's come undone. And I used to feel sorry for her. Sad. Really pathetic.
