Yesterday Barack Obama called an elderly woman "sweetie"-
so he did it AGAIN. Was there a big hue and cry around here about it like the first time?

14. No, If you look at the video I don't think so
In fact Hill was just talking about Obama on the MSM and she put her finger to her face although it was not, the finger. But Obama is ALWAYS touching his face or his hair, it is the way he PAUSES before he makes his next statement.

And if he did . . . well it was just sweet, IMHO.

17. Just like with the word "cunt"... "sweetie" can be offensive!
Edited on Fri Apr-18-08 06:49 PM by redqueen
If my friend playfully calls me a cunt... that's one thing. If someone on this board calls me a cunt to be nasty... that's another.

If a candidate you support calls you "sweetie"... that's probably not gonna be viewed as being a Bad Thing. But a smarmy stranger hitting on you, or some jerk trying to be condescending? Uh, no.

Context...

I'm also a white woman of some years. 60 of them. I'm in no way offended when people call me dear, sweetie or m'am. I lived in the South for many years, and it's a common term of endearment, and respect used for us "old ladies". (Actually it's elitist to make fun of the way regular Southern folks talk! haha)

32. Women call men "sweetie"
down here in the South.

I was at the hardware store the other day for the 2 for 1 sale. Everything in the marked bucket was buy 1 get 1 free. They had Vienna sausages, shampoo and flyswatters all in the same bucket. I didn't know if you could mix and match items. I asked the woman behind the counter ringing me up if I could get 3 sausages and 1 flyswatter for the same price as 2 flyswatters and 2 shampoos.

She said "sure Sweetie"!

Standard vocabulary around the South...whats the big deal? It's just a kind word.

42. I think you meant to respond to the OP. Your screen name
makes me hungry. I have to check the current market price on pompano, whenever I caught one in the past I called it "a fifteen dollar fish." After seven years of * that is probably outdated. I have an old book around here that remarks about pompano being expensive at a dollar a pound.

We hardly ever see flies around here, they tell me it is because picking up the garbage twice a week breaks their life cycle. We do get them when there is red tide though, because of the dead fish.

46. Screen name?
I picked up that nickname back in the 70's. Living here along the Gulf Coast I have caught my share of pompano. It's the only fish I could ever catch with any regularity, thus the name. I did alot of deep sea fishing and would get skunked once in a while but I have never been skunked on pompano. As far back as I can remember they have had pretty liberal bag limits but I would catch 2 or 3 and go home.

They are expensive. It is such a mild tasting fish. The fish doesn't taste real fishy. Tourists and locals alike love pompano. Alot of times if one was to walk down the beach in late afternoon and catch a pompano fisherman 1/2 drunk and 1/2 sunburnt more times than not he'll/she'll give ya handful of pompano so he/she ain't got to go home and be bothered with cleaning them.

But, you are right. If you buy them in a fish market the price is high as a Georgia Pine.

:hi:

54. Yea
(Pensacola, FWB, Destin). Get ya a small sand flea net (bait stores have them) catch you some sandfleas, throw out past the first sand bars late afternoon or early morning. You'll catch them out there schooling up.

Also they have jigs that work pretty good but you'll have to work to work the jig. Anything white or light pink color (shrimp colored) small artificial bait will work.

The trick is finding them schooling around. Look for birds diving and interrupted water patterns.

Be sure and check your local bag limits.
Good luck! Good eating.

56. I have a sand flea rake, but I hear the nets are better- I will have
to pick one up and learn how to use it. At least around here the trouble with sand fleas as bait is that the ladyfish love 'em. The beach here is such that you can't "throw out past the first sandbar" without wading quite a distance. I think by the time I wade in with the first pompano (I am too much of a coward to have a stringer near me when I am in the water) the school has moved.

Thanks for the tip. I fished the beach today, it was wavy and windy, I didn't catch much. As I was leaving a guy caught a Redfish about 22 inches long in his cast net when he was trying to catch greenbacks for bait. Go figure.

57. I want to live in a world where people can use terms of endearment with strangers.
It's a better world, frankly.

The over intellectualized concept that it's pejorative creates a sterile, cold, heartless society.

I can tell the difference between affection and debasement, endearment and harassment.

58. The very idea is paradoxical: a term of endearment for those you're not endeared to?
Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 02:54 PM by CK dexter
A diminuitive can be debasing, even when used positively and affectionately. It indicates an adult-child relation, which really is demeaning, even if meant harmlessly. I think we make too big a deal about it sometimes--and this "sweetie" case is pretty trivial.

But we really are better off without this practice--I think it's a vestige of an outdated worldview, in which people are easily designated as fully vs. less fully responsible full-fledged human beings (so that, e.g., diminutives were used for children, the elderly, women, servants, and minorities--oh, and also pets).

62. You are completely wrong.
How sad.

When you use a term of endearment with a stranger you are expressing a HOPE and WISH that they will find you endearing. It is not paradoxical at all. It's beautiful and HUMAN.

It is only pejorative when intended to be pejorative. Can't you distinguish the two? Americans are obsessed with their fucked up language.

I am so glad I live in a world where people commonly call each other darling, love, dear, honey, doll, sugar, etc. with affection and respect, never considering it debasing.

Your logic suggests that talking to you like you're a child is an insult, when in reality, a child is the most valued thing in the universe. You are being put on a pedestal, being compared to something wonderful and precious.

Considering you have created a society where children have to be frisked for guns in order to go to school, I'd say you're doing a great job. Keep on fulfilling with your Orwellian dream.

Better off without this practice? Hardly.
