Airport runways and many highways, however, are visible from space, being much wider than the Great Wall.

The 'in space' phrase is rather nebulous here. First off, as a quick internet search will show, the "Great Wall of China is the only man made object visible from space" is, by itself, false. In fact, from low earth orbit many man made objects are visible from space. Cities, major highways, agriculture, numerous strip mines, etc. Beyond a few thousand miles, however, nothing is visible from space. From the Moon (which is often the alternate urban legend), no man made object is visible. In fact, according to the astronauts who were there, even the continents are sometimes hard to see. Thus, the movie was wrong, first because it would not be only one of two objects visible from space, and chances are (I haven't done the math), it wouldn't be visible from the moon, either. Of course, if it were to be visible from the moon, that would make it the only man made object visible from that distance.
