Barack is a 21st century candidate. Hilary is stuck in the 20th |
|
(This has probably been said before but...)
Her recent words against Move On support this conclusion. The Clinton machine is of the 1990s. Some things, of course, haven't changed. Getting elected in that era was dependent on fund-raising, just as it is now. But back then, the internet was just emerging. The press was restricted mostly to television, radio and newspapers, and fund raising was done the old-fashioned way. The Clintons did a great job in this milieu-- they knew how to stay on message, and they knew how to get the rich donors. But it's the twenty-first century now, and things have changed. The internet has leveled the playing field-- instead of a few individuals owning most of the media and therefore having control of what is reported as news, we have millions of people giving their opinions, creating their own commercials (whether videos or chain emails), and shaping the dialogue. It's akin to a person printing and passing out handbills 200 years ago: the rich are no longer the only ones who can broadcast their views to the world. Add to this the fact that it's easier than ever for ordinary people to donate to their candidate of choice-- a quick click and your candidate's coffer is richer. True, it's only by a tiny amount, but a slow and steady rain can create a flood more devastating than that created by a downpour.
Hillary's campaign is stuck in a twentieth century time warp. She has assumed that the way to win this time around is by using the tactics that brought victory in the past: using a small number of wealthy individuals to underwrite her campaign, and concentrating her message on traditional outlets, using traditional strategies. No wonder she was upset enough to comment on activist groups such as Move On. She never considered that the little people might want to play a larger part than they've been given in the past.

It's heartening that the people whose posts most inspire me are so active at DU, and that you haven't bowed to the constant criticism from the other side. It depresses me to even write "other side," as that should be referring to McCain, not Clinton, but there it is.
