Survey Shows US Muslim Voters Support Kerry
<A survey of American Muslim voters indicates a majority favor John Kerry in the coming presidential election - and that hardly any support President Bush.

A large U.S. Muslim group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, conducted the survey by sending out a questionnaire to subscribers of its own e-mail list.

Of those who responded, 54 percent said they would vote for Mr. Kerry if the election were held tomorrow.

Twenty-six percent said they would support independent candidate Ralph Nader, who is of Lebanese descent. Only two percent said they would vote for President Bush. >

1. Kerry needs to attack
the patriot act and repressive immigration laws more to garner the arab vote. His right winge stance on Israel probably hurts him too. I think the democrats can appeal to both jewish and arab voters.

5. Now hold on a minute, little Buckaroo
It is significant because Bush is claiming that Middle Easterners love him and are grateful that we are blowing the heads off their children. There are idiots out there who believe that. This poll shows that those in America most connected to the Middle East don't buy it.

That's no surprise to us, but it may just shock a few Bush Kool-aide sippers. Kind of like the woman in F-9/11, who suddenly had to face Lila, who disproved all her cozy fantasies about the invasion.

14. But
if we can knock the Kool-aide from their hands and show them what's in it, they'll vote for us. That's a good thing, isn't it?

3. Great. I suspect, though, with regard to Nader
that the 26% support who favor him is because Nader is the one speaking out completely against Bush's militarism against Muslim countries, not because of his Lebanese descent. I'm no Nader fan, but give him, and especially that 26% of Muslims, credit for being smart enough to decide on issues and not parentage.

Besides, isn't Nader an atheist? I'm sure he's not Muslim. Was his family Muslim? Is there any reason other than that he has ancestry with brownish skin that they would think his Lebanese heritage, rather than his positions, would affect Muslim votes?

4. The reason for the support
is because the Dems also kiss Israel's ass, just as the Republicans do.

7. That reason is undermined by the 56% who back Kerry
The Dems don't kiss Israel's ass "just as the Republicans do." The Dems kiss it way too much for my taste, but Dems are far more evenhanded in their efforts to arbitrate between the different factions. Repub ideas on how to bring peace is to allow Israel to wipe out all opposition. Dem ideas involve negotiations that give Palestineans some of what they want.

I won't go further than that in stating my opinions on what should be done, but I will say that the Dems don't do as much as I'd do, but they do more than the Repubs do. And that might help explain the 56% who support Kerry.

12. Fair enough
Dems are slightly better, but neither have taken a TRUE even handed approach and still support finanically, militarily, and ideologically the Israel government's oppression of the Palestinian people.

13. I think
that means we agree. :-)

Given the option, I'll always choose slightly better over much worse. I'd prefer perfect, but it ain't coming. Voting is too much like dating: the only way you get everything you want is if you have very low expectations or are very rich.

6. Nader always gets about this much support from Muslims
and it's mostly because of the palestinian issue.

8. Yeah, true. I wasn't claiming an inclusive answer
just pointing out that the implication that Muslim support of Nader was based only on some racial connection was insulting.

10. yup, in the primary Wes Clark was pretty popular among Muslims
because of what he did in kosovo which was about defending a mostly muslim population.

9. I am not 100%
on either side of the Israel issue. Both sides should be treated fairly though, and they are not being treated that way by the Dems or the Reps.
