I know some of you won't like this but what about Evan Bayh as Obama's running mate? |
|
The only reason I'm suggesting this is that the new Indiana poll indicates that Obama is leading in Indiana, a state the Dems have not won since 1964 (and before that 1936). Indiana has 12 electoral votes. If Obama is reasonably competitive then couldn't bringing Bayh on the ticket help seal the deal?
Other points to consider: 1) Bayh is a Clinton supporter and it might help bring the party together by teaming Obama up with a Clinton supporter.
2) Indiana is in a crucial part of the country--the industrial midwest. McCain will make a big deal about competing in Michigan and Ohio and with two midwesterners on the ticket (like Bill Clinton had two Southerners with Al Gore) it might help some in this region.
3) Where Obama is a liberal, Bayh is more of a moderate. For instance Jimmy Carter, a moderate southerner made Walter Mondale, a liberal midwesterner his running mate in '76, Kennedy-Johnson in '60, etc.
4) Experience--While still relatively young, Bayh has served as Governor of Indiana for two terms, and I think he's in his third term as a Senator.
On the other hand: I think that the Governor of Indiana is a Republican? and if so, if Obama/Bayh are elected we could lose a Democratic Senator.

during the primary.
The key is to find the Democratic lawmaker who knows best how to target and undermine McCain, as THAT is the biggest job the VP candidate has for four months.

14. This Hoosier says FUCK no |
|
The man WILL NOT deliver Indiana to the blue side. He is a spineless pure politician that determins which way the wind is blowing before saying anything.
His recent veiled threat about "not getting your friends crosswise" (something like that) to uncommitted Congressmen from the state has only deepened his sliminess.

Obama is already from the midwest, so Bayh makes no sense unless someone is hoping to coat tail him into a prez run in the future. such a sleazy tactic would fit right in with the DLC... try to insert a mole into a candidacy that has people inspired because it's NOT yet another DLC crap fest.
NO. NO. NO. NO.
Bill Richardson or Wesley Clark are the two logical short list names imo. Richardson is the west/southwest, Hispanics, and "white" enough to placate the white guy vote.
Clark covers the white guy vote and military issues.
Evan Bayh offers NOTHING. Not only that, he has come out and told other dems not to back Obama, while he has been kissing HRC's ass for years to get the v.p. nod. I love the irony of his ass-kissing that is now coming back to bite him... while the election was considered a shoo-in for Hillary, he couldn't be weasel enough.
Don't need him now. don't want him now. Like IAJSR, I live in IN now. All the manufacturing jobs that have gone the anti-union stations of the cross were done when Bayh had some say over the situation. What did he do? Wave as plants closed and moved to Mexico. Let me wave bye bye to Bayh as his v.p. hopes die... he'll have a much easier time finding a job what with his daddy's legacy. No wonder he was so hot to be Hillary's v.p. dynasties like dynasties.

18. Some of you might as well get used to the fact that we need a Clinton supporter as VP |
|
I don't think Obama will offer her VP, and I don't think she would accept if he offered it.
Have all the fun you want bashing Clinton *rolls eyes*
But when it comes down to it, Obama needs to show he is a uniter by choosing a Clinton supporter like Bayh or Clark.

26. I've met Bayh, spent some time with him, like him personally, and say no way!! |
|
He's fairly smart, and Susan is INCREDIBLY smart, but he's not what we need for our VP now, not for Obama, not for Hillary. Indiana would only be a weak maybe even with him on the ticket. Wes Clark would be a far better VP for either Obama or Hillary. Clark is BRILLIANT, already has contacts with many world leaders, brings real-life military experience without fanatical attachment to the military. Plus, he would run rings around any VP candidate McCain could come up with. Bayh would not. The radical right has only one active member with a real intellect, and he is not available for the position (it's Nino Scalia, and he's not leaving the Supreme Court until the Grim Reaper removes him by force).
There are other possibilities, many more for Obama than HRC, and I'm sure that if Obama is the nominee, as now looks likely, he will deliberate carefully and choose an ideal VP, or someone close to it.
