Can I get some DU love for the Secret Service protecting our candidates?
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 04:34 PM by bigtree

Secret Service During Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama campaign stop Saturday at Anderson High School Saturday

Security tight for town hall meeting

ANDERSON — Much like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s swing through Madison County, security was tight for Sen. Barack Obama’s primary campaign stop at Anderson High School on Saturday, with metal detectors, U.S Secret Service agents and bomb-detecting dogs.

Casey said an ISP bomb-detecting dog completed at last two sweeps of the school to make sure there were no explosive devices.

Sgt. Leonard Langland, an ISP bomb technician, said the school was cleared of everyone except for law enforcement officials Saturday morning. Then both canines and technicians swept the building in search of anything suspicious. Nothing unusual was found, he said.

Unlike the Clinton campaign stop, which had two bomb threats called in — including one made to The Herald Bulletin — no threats were made during Obama’s visit, Langland said.

“The Secret Service didn’t report any threats to us,” he said.

14 News Interview with Hillary Clinton April 26, 2008

Interviewer: "Last night, 14 news reported on a police investigation into a possible local threat against you. Do you worry about things like that?"

Clinton: "Well, I, uh, I have the utmost confidence in the Secret Service. And they've done a wonderful job taking care of me for a lot of years. So, I really don't think about it. I don't worry about it."

3. Have you ever seen these men and women in action?
I saw Bill Clinton speak when he was POTUS and they were truly something to watch. Unbelievable. That's who I would want watching over me if I were either of the candidates.

9. I remember watching the Reagan attempted hit live on TV as it happenned.
I was impressed by the way the Secret Service guys whipped those Uzi's out from under their jackets and took Hinkley down. Not before he got a bullet into Brady and into Ronnie, of course. But certainly before he had a chance to get anywhere.

I was at a Clinton "bus tour" event in 96, and it was pretty easy for me to spot the Secret Service guys in the crowd. Considering this was in one of the "reddest" counties in the state, I'm sure they were more cautious than usual that day.

13. heh, boy have I seen them in action.
Many years ago when I was young and at Jimmy Carter's inaugural ball, I got, well, more than a little tipsy, and tripped over George Wallace's wheel chair. One of the more humiliating moments of my life. I went sprawling and I was wearing a long black silk wrap around skirt. It revealed... much, and the SS surrounded me in about 2 seconds flat. Wallace was quite gracious. The SS guys were amused once they saw that I was simply a harmless drunk girl. I actually have another Secret Service Story that's so embarassing I'll refrain from telling it.

14. You were a little tipsy and tripped over George Wallace's wheelchair and exposed yourself?

You just can't make stuff like that up.

I can't even imagine what your other story is. Next time you are posting after a few drinks, maybe you will spill the beans.

18. well, I was wearing panty hose and underwear but
it was still damned embarassing. My dad thought it was funny, and he never stopped reminding me of it, but my Mom was furious, and sent me back to the Hay-Adam with one of my equally drunk and even younger sisters.

Very polite, and she (kinda counterproductively) insisted on introducing him everyplace they went.

20. Most;ly great guys, I'd imagine, and deserately needed for truly progressive
Democratic politicians, in particular. But fear one or two may be able to be got at.

An SAS specialist said that the agent closest to Reagan when he was shot was nowhere near close enough to him. Unprofessional? I doubt it. Then of course there were the massive anti-Kennedy conspiracies. But I don't want to make this a "wet blanket" post, when tribute is being paid to men who would seldom receive the public recognition they deserve.

28. You've got to be kidding me
Is this the same DU that goes nuts every time the Secret Service makes a little visit to anyone who even marginally threatens Bush?

Point is, its their job to protect, and they will do whats necessary to protect, and they do it very very well.

30. When Cheney comes to Jackson Hole...
his Secret Service guys work out at the same gym I use. I am NOT certain that they are human beings. There's one guy who makes the speed back sing and he looks like he's half asleep doing it. He goes from rhythm to rhythm and high tempo and higher tempo and back for 45 minutes or more and doesn't seem to break a sweat. Then he goes over to the Stair Mill (kind of like a really steep escalator), sets it on the highest speed and does the equivalent of running up about 200 stories - he actually gets a bit damp doing that. Then he goes over to the climbing wall (there's an indoor climbing facility, of course, this is Jackson Hole) and does laps on 5.10 thin face lines with his heels curled up to his butt.

In a town where physical accomplishment is recognized and appreciated, and where a majority of the people (certainly the ones who go to gyms and climb mountains) can't stand Dick Cheney, his Secret Service folks get nothing but respect.
