Dr. Wright gives a smackdown against division carried live by CNN LIVE ON CNN NOW*****
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 07:58 PM by grantcart
DR. Rev. Wright gave a lengthy address that was carried without break by CNN and FOX. It was to the Detroit Branch of the NAACP.

The theme was that difference does not mean deficient.

Some of the expression of the themese

a) Pedagogical differences - The difference between objective and subjective pedagogies that are typica between Europoean based and African based learning. Objective pedagogies are learning from identifying objects, symbols and books while African (and other cultures) from subjective experiences.

b) Musical Differences

c) Linguistic Differences

d) Historical Differences.

e) Hermeneutical Differences (Interpretattions of Sacred Scripture)

f) Homiletical Differences (Style of Worship)

Most of his points were based citing standard academic references many going back decades.

Parts of the explanations were illustrated by colorful mimicing of accents or singing styles or even dance steps of marching bands.

It was an impassioned thoughtful and clever attack on division and a remarkable speech explaining that reactions to idiocincracies between people that cause people to look down on other people.

His line that was repeated through out the speech was that "difference is not deficient" and that "change is about to happen".

It also included a tough part that criticized the Black Community about how it treats itself.

It included a litany of examples including how straights treated gay and how Christians treat Jews.

(It also included a very careful jab at Bill O'Reilly)

This is provided as a quick summary for people that missed the speech.

I recommend you to see the whole speech and not the excerpts.

If anybody has any additional notes to the speech that they got while he was giving it please add on below

Sure some will try to pick this apart and snipe at the Obama campaign with the pieces. But the fact that it was aired in it's entirety, live, bodes well for how this speech will play out.

Combined with Obama's Fox interview, I think this was a great day for camp Obama.

7. Does anyone know the name of
the African American woman with the short hair cut who anchors MSNBC in the afternoons (I never know the names of the people who do MSNBC during the day, except maybe Contessa, since it's an unusual name). I remember when the "controversy" over Wright first arose and pundits were on to comment, she said that she used to live in Chicago and had gone to Trinity to see Wright preach several times, and it was nothing like the sound bytes suggested.

3. Dr. Wright's speech
was quite interesting. His focus was Change, but he expressed how we must change how we treat each other and understand that our differences don't make us less.

To hear Mr. Rick Sanchez/CNN, however, you would have thought Rev. Wright was all hellfire & brimstone.

What an idiot!

just the mention of his name makes me cringe. He was an idiot when he was an anchor in Miami at a faux news affiliate in miami. that was the same one that weather dude got caught soliciting sex from young boys. Sanchez left Miami in a cloud of scandal. I know its off topic but that idiot stirs up quite a bit of anger everytime i see him on CNN.

29. Silly season or not...I watched and I liked his speech
very much. I'd love to go to his church to hear him. I would even start going regularly if he were near me. It's a little far from VA to go there on Sunday mornings. :-)

This is from a liberal, old white woman. I didn't think Sanchez was nearly as bad in his comments afterwards as Geraldo was on Fox. He tried to say that the reverend advocated a different standard of education for black children than for all others. I didn't hear that. I heard that we need to teach children different METHODS of learning based on their backgrounds. AND I, as a retired teacher of 32 years, know that in the area where I was teaching, we were doing that 40 years ago. Geraldo knew nothing about right brain and left brain activities yet he took it upon himself to try to analyze what Rev. Wright was saying and of course he was doing it all wrong.

Now we can get Mr. Hannity's take on all of this. I'll bet he didn't hear it like I did either. He always has to make something sinister out of everything.

9. This is going to put evangelical pastors in a spot there is nothing
in the speech that is different from what they are preaching.

Also in a very clever way it supports conservative Christians in how they get painted by the mainstream media.

Pentacostals for example will welcome the speech completely and the defence against mainline protestant churches.

This is going to give the responsible part of the MSM the hook they needed to get away from bashing Wright.

It was endearing and clever. Just when you thought he was going to jump off the cliff and make a fool out of himself

he is talking in a brilliant British accent and making a sublime point.

21. I liked the part near the end
To paraphrase, it was something like,
"If I were in a church, I would say a prayer to Jesus.
"If I were in a synagogue, I would say a prayer to {Hebrew word for God}
"If I were in a mosque, I would beseech {Arabic word for God}
"And if I were supporting a political candidate, I would say "Yes We Can."

(Sorry about my poor paraphrasing skills.)

Amazing that the whole speech was played in full.Rev. Wright is one awesome, intelligent man.

He wasn't mocking Irish people. He was talking about *our* experience as the different ones, the ones suffering from discrimination, the ones on the outside. Now we're no longer there... and are we closing the doors or welcoming others in?

I think you're looking for reasons to be insulted. Because that's easier than hearing the message.

Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 08:12 PM by pinto
Though I am leery of the blurring of political lines between church and state, he deftly addressed the oft cited connections to Sen. Obama and at the outset said his talk wasn't political. While he made some clear political references, I think he held a line fairly well.

I really liked his music tempo examples of people having a different framework - "different not deficient" was his theme - and his willingness to mimic those styles in the course of his speech.

And he made some pretty pointed comments about how we see and treat people who are different than ourselves.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with African American preachers, save for the most well known. He seemed a blend of professor and preacher in this delivery. I really liked it.

56. A brilliant speech...
delivered by a brilliant intellect. And no, I am not _____.

Only the very ignorant closed-minded people could not see many basic truths in his message.

The explanation of linguistics was spot on. Though some might take offense it was accurate...and very humorous. I would suspect that even the Kennedy's found it humorous.

I shall now await snippets of the speech presented by the bigoted MSM to prove that he is a "whackadoodle." And yes, the undedicated will snarf it up. Hopefully a minority...Hillary's uneducated demographic.

One of these days...

Please people, educate thy-selves.

In general, though maybe not FOX's intent, I think that Barack Obama had a fairly good day...so far.

I think there is pent up guilt in the MSM about how this has gotten blown out of proportion and how they picked on the guy.

My prediciton is that they will be falling over themselves to pick the best lines of this to show how 'normal and reasonable' he is.

The establishment should have left him alone. 40 years after they killed MLK a new leader has emerged.
They woke up a quiet sleeping giant who has paid his fugging dues over and over.

And yet children have usually been forced into a one-size-fits-all learning environment.

More's the pity, because how many children of all colors and cultures get left out when only one way of learning is presented to them?

you can get a lecture about music and then go to the piano and will you be able to play it?

there is a lot that we learn as a subjective muscular experience.

Math for example should be taught not as a concept in the begining but as an exercise. Later you teach the concepts. Kuson math centers teach this method and as a result any child will learn at twice the rate they normally do. After the foundation is established then the concepts can be taught.

Playing the piano right brain, learning math theory left brain.

Morally and ethically speaking, she's 180 degrees wrong.

Wright's a minister. He's be letting his ultimate boss down if he let them kick him without comment just to score political points.

Evil is what happens when good people keep silent and Wright has a God bound duty to speak out against the injustice done to him. It's in his job description.

The question is can Clinton or her team see the world through any other lens besides politics?

I want to be one of the people working hard to see and appreciate the differences in people, one of the people working hard to see that different does not mean deficient. That we can all understand each other if we try.

Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 10:43 PM by sfexpat2000
don't have the inclination to spend so much time listening to this speech. They will hear the bs media evaluations. And, they will wonder why so many people are making such a big fuss over something Obama's ex-pastor has to say.

They are caring about their mortgage, their grocery bill and gas prices and if they can afford to take any kind of vacation this year. That's my take, anyway.

/oops

131. you really are incapacitated above the shoulders

Every conservative religious group that has been put down because they are different - Pentacostals, Evangelicals, Protestants and conservative Catholics will see immediately that he has used theological arguments not only to defend the ignorant attacks on the African American Church but also all of them.

Tomorrow you are going to see a wide number of very conservative religious leaders endorse this speech - headed by Governor Huckabee.

Committment to secularism is not a defense of ignorance of the faith based communitites. If you don't understand the religious sensitivities that various groups in America face then it would probably be best to refrain from making statements of such overwhelming ignorance.

I admit that when I first heard the string of sound bytes from Wright last month, I was absolutely cringing, and thinking about how Obama would weather this storm. It was all I knew of Wright at the time. I felt Obama's speech on race was excellent and addressed a lot of important points.

But now, I feel like even more blanks were filled in for me. I had never listened to an entire speech by Wright. I hadn't experienced the depth of his skill or the way he weaves a narrative across so many fields of knowledge. It was a masterful speech, and assuming this level of talent has been his hallmark throughout his career, then I can completely understand how he became a leader of such a large congregation.

In light of this additional understanding, I find it sad that so many people will likely ignore or refuse to listen to anything else by Wright, based on initial impressions from a loop of his "lowlights." anyone who dismisses this man lightly is missing out on opportunities for greater understanding, and that is truly their own loss.

149. ummm.. it was racist and his assertions were based on outdated studies on biological differences
between the races.

It would have been one thing to say that it was black culture that encouraged object oriented learning, and quite another to say that it was genetics.

It would have been on thing to say that culture dictated musical preference rather than genetic.

It would have been one thing to say that hermaneutics were culturally based rather than genetic.

BUT he did not. He relegated them to the color of the skin, to genetic heritage, which is total and complete BULLSHIT... modern studies of FMRI and brain patterns PROVE that there is no difference in the functioning of AA brains and European brains.

This friggin idiot was quoting studies from 80 to 150 years ago!!!!!!!!!!

In the field of cognitive science, 5 years is old, 10 is ancient... and he was going back 80 years!!!!!!!

159. At no point was he saying that it was genetic,

the point was different cultures develop different pedagogies. He specifically spoke of how babies are taught differently from the

time in the crib. He never mentioned genetics. All of the academic sources he cited all speak to different pedagogical reflexes

based on cultural traditions and child rearing, and are considered fairly conventional. He cited no academic source for a genetic

understanding of different learning paradigms.

he is a brilliant man who speaks truth so powerfully that many cannot stand to hear it. As a 34year old white woman, I have absolutely no problem apologizing to black americans for slavery and all that it has caused them to endure. I am truly sorry.

Barack Obama's campaign has provided clear proof of that. I prefer to listen to Barack Obama's message of unity and growth as a nation than listening to Rev Wright or the Media discuss the past.

I must take issue with the theory that black children and white children learn differently. The environment in which a child is reared will be either more aural and verbal or more academic in nature to varying degrees. In many families children are read to and encouraged to read at a very early age. In other families they are not. And this would be in the same economic and racial framework. Middle class white children in a suburban environment can also have vastly different learning styles based upon what sort of parenting there is in their formative learning years.

In my experience, the more affluent communities are likely to have parents who are more academic minded and encourage books and reading in the home. These children are more likely to be encouraged to pursue college educations (especially at ivy league colleges). Reverend Wright does a tremendous disservice to black children by suggesting that they are "aural" learners who can't sit still in a classroom. He himself is a college graduate, as are Michelle and Barack Obama, and tens of thousands of other Black Americans. Surely these people learned in the traditional "white" way?

165. Well to begin with Barack was raised in a total 'European' environment
The Pedagogical issue was only one of the areas that Rev. Wright was using to illustrate a larger point and that is that 'different is not deficient'.

The speech was not meant as a major address on pedagogy but as an illustration that rather than condemning people who appear different it would be better to understand them. He also used music, linguistics, hermenuetics and homelitics as other examples.

166. The reality is that Obama is going to get the nomination and then face McCain
in the GE. It is a distraction but better we drive it into the ground now and get it out of the way.

BTW Obama is actually going to be running against somebody. McCain's seeking the endorsement of politically reactionary ministers is a much bigger problem than Jeremy Wright.

Obama will get the nomination and he will win the GE. Better these distractions are dealt with now.
