Perhaps this topic has been covered in this forum at some point. If so, I apologize.
Roy Moore is the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court -- former because he was removed from office for refusing to obey the lawful order of a federal judge to remove his Ten Commandments monument from the Supreme Court building in Montgomery.
That, of course, made him a hero of the religious right. Actually more like a rock star. When he speaks, he does so before packed houses of fanatics. For Christian conservatives, Roy Moore is the real deal.
Because of his popularity, the far-right Constitution Party tried to recruit him to run as their presidential candidate. Thus far, they have not been successful. Perhaps because Moore has some other office (U.S. Senate from Alabama, governor) in mind.
But the intriguing thing about Roy Moore is that, if he did run, he would virtually ensure Kerry's election.
Roy Moore became chief justice because he drew more than 800,000 votes in Alabama. If he ran for president, he would easily outpoll Nader. He would draw thousands of votes from North Florida, making Florida an easy win for Kerry. He would also draw enough from Bush to deliver Louisiana and Arkansas. I would even go so far as to suggest that Moore on the ballot delivers Alabama to Kerry.
It's just a crying shame nobody could convince him to run.
