The Kerry-Edwards cavalcade rolled into midtown Manhattan on Thursday night for a delayed date with the east coast celebrity elite that boosted campaign funds by $7.5m.
That, at least, was the figure announced by John Kerry when he took to the stage with his running mate, their wives and other family members, at the end of a long night of music-making, speeches, and barbed jokes at the expense of George W Bush.
The fund-raising extravaganza was scheduled for early June, but was cancelled because of the death of former US President, Ronald Reagan.
In one obvious way, it was a timely delay for the Democrats.
Back then, Mr Kerry was running alone, but last night provided a golden opportunity to share the political limelight - quite literally - in one of the most sympathetic environments imaginable.
