When Obama gets pissed
Posted April 29th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Yesterday, Jeremiah Wright pushed Barack Obama pretty far. Today, at a DC press conference, Obama pushed back.

Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he was outraged by the latest assertion by his former pastor that criticism of his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church.

The presidential candidate is seeking to tamp down the growing fury over Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his incendiary remarks that threaten to envelope his campaign.

“I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday,” Obama told reporters at a news conference.

For six weeks, Obama has cautiously defended Wright the man — and even Wright the pastor — while denouncing some of Wright’s more notorious sermons. Today, the subtleties, context, and understanding are gone. Obama’s pissed.

“The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate, and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective of the black church.

“They certainly don’t portray accurately my values and beliefs. And if Reverend Wright thinks that that’s political posturing, as he put it, then he doesn’t know me very well. And based on his remarks yesterday, well, I might not know him as well as I thought, either.”

The subtext was less than subtle: “If Wright thinks he’s going to sabotage my campaign for his own vanity, narcissism, and desire to grandstand, he’s crazy.”

1. Watching the video, you could tell it was hard for him to say, but necessary
Politics does strange things to friendships sometimes.

2. Tell me about it; I haven't talked to a brother in years because of
politics, but I think Obama liked Wright more than I like my brother most of the time.

7. What is it about brothers?
I haven't talked to mine in almost 4 yrs because he thinks * is the best pResident ever.
We didn't even talk when our other brother died last Nov, that's how deep the division has gotten.

10. Thanks. I wish it hadn't happened but it did...
I guess that's why I feel so strongly about the person who will be our next President.
I want a President who has a chance of bringing this country together not one that will have us living the divisive '90s again.

14. It's also sisters too...
I have a hard time talking to my sister since she voted for Arnold the last two times, and is very dismissive when I talk about my concerns about the corporate lobbyists over our government.

It works both ways! :) Sometimes family members don't study the details as much as we do!

I believe that he has the temperament that we need in the White House at this time. When I'm pissed it is really evident! :)

8. Same here, but I hope he's blowing off some steam in private.
It weirds me out when someone says they're angry but the tone in their voice doesn't rise to it. When I'm angry I don't control it- I can't.

15. Isn't is interesting how people show their anger?
I tend to be quiet; my expression shows it but I do not get loud. That doesn't mean I'm not feeling it inside though. :hi:

16. yes, its very interesting
Its uncomfortable seeing someone in a position of power lose their temper, and that will be McCain's undoing. Bush gets all sputtery and pissy- and I bet he's a beast away from the cameras. Clinton gets red faced but he pretty much verbalized it appropriately (usually towards the press).

I guess when someone is more contained, like Obama, you always wonder if there's more to come until you really know them.

4. Now Obama knows exactly how Hillary Clinton feels.
Seriously, Wright has actually outdone the Big Dog in embarrassing the one he loves.

Damn, this sucks.

5. Jeremiah Wright is a crazy old man
He could have quit after the Moyers interview with his dignity intact. His performance at the press club was vindictive and destructive. Obama had no choice but to do what he did.

Obama's not throwing anyone under the bus..he's defending himself from attacks on all sides.

17. I've never heard such anger in his voice before, I'd say "pissed" is exactly the right word.
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 05:25 PM by Unbowed
And hurt. HE didn't throw Wright under the bus. And then Wright goes on this greatest hits tour so anyone who might have missed some of his more outrageous statements gets another chance to hear them reiterated. He not only threw Obama under the bus but he drove the bus right over Obama, back and forth a couple of times for good measure.

Obama's never once sounded this angry with Hillary Clinton, no matter how "down and dirty" her campaign and her rhetoric against him got. He laughed it off. I was fuming, but Obama laughed it off.

This just goes to confirm a suspicion I've had for a long time: Obama is going easy on Clinton. He doesn't want to damage her. He's been far more respectful than she deserves, IMO. His refusal to take the gloves off with Clinton is a refusal to do damage to a prominent member of the Democratic Party, a United States Senator and former First Lady.

Obama took the gloves off today. It gave me an insight into how he will handle McCain on the issues this fall. I can't wait until he has at McCain. It won't be about the nonsense the primary has been about. Obama is going to cut to the chase and call McCain out on the war, the economy, torture, civil rights, womens right, the environment and all the things that McCain's been getting a pass on.

18. If this is Obama being pissed...
...then the man is almost supernaturally even-tempered.

(Note: That's a GOOD thing in a potential C-in-C)
