Bush/Rove running to the right?
Aren't you supposed to run to the center? Does Bush/Rove think they need to shore up the base? All this talk about values, taxes and now abortion ....

Like everybody, I know former republicans who say they will never vote for Bush again.

Is Dowd seeing something in the poll numbers that the outside polls are not reporting?

Does Rove and co think it is more important to pull in the 4 million Christian conservatives that didn't vote in 2000 vs. the moderates and new voters.

Or maybe, the dems are so united against him that they feel they have to fire up their base to compete.

2. Run to the right now
Dance to the center in August/September (starting at the convention)

since the middle isn't paying attention now.

3. I'm no so sure they aren't paying attention.
To be sure, Bush's aura of moderation has completely slipped away. So while people are not in campaign mode, it will be a hard sell for Bush to suddenly parade a few Blacks and Latinos and pretend he's not a fascist. Most people intuitively know that Bush is a far-rightist, I think. To some, that's a good thing. But moderates, the largest bloc of voters, will definitely go for Kerry by a wide margin. Of course there are more "conservatives" than "liberals," so we need a big moderate victory margin.

4. the far right is his BIG base...
he will suck up to them no matter what. I think the middle of the roaders are very skeptical now. Least I hope so.

5. He Expect To Win With Just the Far Right (and Diebold)
He has no need to move to the center any more.
