Will crappy planning for GOP Convention affect (northern) NJ vote?
They're planning to reroute trains into Penn Station, which is going to create massive problems for anyone commuting into Manhattan by rail.

"Each day, 120,000 passengers take New Jersey Transit into and out of the city. But only one-third of the tunnels entering and exiting under the Garden will be in operation from August 29th through September 2nd."

For those of you not in the NYC area, imagine the highway you use to commute each day being reduced from 3 lanes to 1. Now imagine that the overflow traffic is all being forced down a local side street, where they have to park and then continue their trip by bus. That's pretty much going to be the case if 2/3 of commuters are forced to transfer to the PATH trains.

Long story short: It's gonna get real ugly.

Does anyone from the Boston area know if the planners there have been as cavalier with the way the Dem's convention will affect commuters??

1. Well I think
all states affected by the conventions (NJ, NY, MA) will go for Kerry anyways.

2. Dem convention will be much worse
I-93 will be closed in Boston and so will North Station. There will also be many street closing and I think part of the subway system. The closures in NYC won't be as bad, I think.

3. I used to live in N. NJ and commute into Manhattan through
the Lincoln Tunnel. If that were closed or only 2 tubes were used, there would be an absolute riot! Folks in NJ do not take monster aggravations of their already hellish commute with a sense of humor.

4. They're talking about the train
They are just saying that only a 1/3 of the tunnels going into Penn Station will be open so not as many trains can enter. Therefore, some will have to go to Hoboken and take the PATH, which should take longer.

5. Yes, I know that they're talking about the train.
I'm talking about the general level of irritation that New Jersey-to-Manhattan commuters are able to generate.

It doesn't matter whether NJ commuters go through one of the tunnels, NJT trains, the PATH or the ferries. Mess up their commute: they get really, really pissed. And they don't forget.
