The Right Wing Has Declared War On Ronald Reagan Jr.*
I put the asterik cuz Ron Reagan is Ronald Precott Reagan and his father is Ronald Wilson Reagan...

There's an article by the malevolent Robert (NoFacts) Novak that trashes Ron Reagan....

Ron Reagan has really got under their skin... It was pricless when Ron Reagan quoted Jack Palance's character in City Slickers saying my "father craps bigger ones than him"..... Him being the Simian In Chief....

1. He's going to speak at the Democratic Convention ...
(CNN) -- Ron Reagan will speak in prime time at the Democratic National Convention on the importance of stem cell research, a senior adviser to presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry told CNN on Sunday.

He gave an interview to the New York Times and William Buckley "refuted" it point by point....

3. Good. Let them do it.
Ron has thick skin and he can take it. And if the GOP had any hopes of getting Nancy to speak in their favor, they will lose it now. Even though she was never mother of the year, I doubt she would speak in defense of those trashing her son.

4. Ron Reagan Never Has Criticized His Father
though obviously he looked at the world through a different prism....

However the right has no compunctions about trashing him...

I wonder how Nancy Reagan will feel seeing her son being trashed in the right wing press....

7. I'm sure Nancy's not pleased.
She has already told the GOP that she won't be at the convention.

Could you imagine if after Ron's speech, Nancy and Patti walked up the stage and hugged him??

13. I need some help with this
someone has challenged me with the following article which basically says Nancy has been duped and stem cell research will not help cure Alzheimer's. I have been trying to find an alternate view since last night. Can anyone help please?

16. yeah, that is right.
Don't get into this argument, they are correct, Alzheimer's is a real long shot and there is no indication whatsoever that stem cell research will help at all with that particular disease. (there are other techniques--such as microarray which DO hold hope for Alzheimer's--but these are not controversial--so DON'T bring them up)

(I have a pHd in science.)

for the record--I am in favor of all research--including stem cell (although I doubt any Alzheimer's answers will come from stem cell). I personally am not in favor of lots of federal funding for this--why should I support big biotech? When they are successful, they will end up holding patents worth many millions of dollars. And they will soak us for all we are worth--in spite of the fact that federal dollars funded their research. I only like federal research funds to go to universities etc. NOT to big biotech companies like genetech. There is NO way I would support federal funds for this, except that it has become SUCH a cool wedge issue for the repugs!!! (and other uneducated people)

I do enjoy using this as a wedge issue with the repugs. It isn't my fault that some are stupid (or desperate like Nancy Reagan). Hey--whatever it takes to bring them over to our side is A-OK with me! I would (and have) lied right to their faces to try and get them on our sides. It is not a big deal. Lie if you can, try to confuse them.

18. Reply: Awful advice. Why lie- the truth is enough.
Text:

We have enough facts to win- why go the Rush Limbaugh, Bush, Cheney, Powell route by lying?

We are better than that- once someone knows you will lie about one thing- it's hard to regain that trust. Terrible advice.

I disagree.

19. don't lie unless it is needed.
On stem cell it is necessary.

It is not good to say--yeah scientists know there isn't a chance in hell that stem cell research is going to help Alzheimer's. That just shoots us in the foot.

We are getting good mileage out of this as a wedge issue! So--On this issue--yes--I say just lie or confuse. If you are a non-scientist, you can always say later that you just didn't understand the facts.

http://www.aaas.org/spp/cstc/briefs/stemcells/index.shtml

See the link "executive summary" in the first paragraph, and the FAQs on the linked page may be helpful:

http://stemcells.nih.gov/index.asp

In the FAQs, this paragraph appears:

"Another potential application of stem cells is making cells and tissues for medical therapies. Today, donated organs and tissues are often used to replace those that are diseased or destroyed. Unfortunately, the number of people needing a transplant far exceeds the number of organs available for transplantation. Pluripotent stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat a myriad of diseases, conditions, and disabilities including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis."

Some say stem-cell research will help Alzhimer's. Some say it won't.

Why don't we actually TRY IT AND FIND OUT!!!

24. yes--AAAS has put together some good stuff
on the GENERAL usefulness of SCR (I should know--as a post-doc I was a AAAS fellow for 2 years! And believe it or not, I even wrote some of the stuff on the website you linked to!).

But--what I am telling you is absolutely true--the odds of an ALZHEIMER's cure coming out of SCR are the odds of a snowball in hell.

I like to act misty when RW's mention it--and just say something non-committal and misleading like "wouldn't that be nice...." (hee hee hee) but--just because they are morons who are easily led, does not mean that we have to be. Please don't get your hopes up--Alzheimers is a whole brain disease--there is next to no hope that SCR will offer anything for this PARTICULAR disease.

There ARE useful applications for SCR (and these reports--which I participated in writing)show that. (there are also some OPINION pieces that are not very scientific--you can cite those--many lay people eat that up). You would be surprised how many are so ignorant of science that you can get them to swallow anything---RR's stupid wife and son are evidence of that!

But--while it is OK to lie to pubs please don't lie to yourselves. Alzheimer's is not going to be solved by SCR. I love it that RR's son is such a useful idiot though!! This is a fantastic wedge issue and we should get all the mileage out of it that we can.

27. Saw Ron Reagan on Hardball last night
He reminds me a lot of his father. He's really starting to look like him. Also, his mannerisms and way of speaking seem very familiar.

I like it when those helpful traits help out the good guys.

28. I watched Ron Reagan last night and
he says that he is aware that stem cell research is unlikely to help treat/cure alzheimers. He said something that it would make Nancy an extremely shallow person if she only was promoting it because of the effect on her own family.
