Please help right away -- we've got to stick together
Hey DUer's

Congress is about to vote on amending the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage equality to same-sex couples.

Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone's rights. Yet our Senators will vote on this amendment in the next 48 hours.

It's urgent that we speak up now. This hateful divisiveness has no place in America. Please join me in saying so, at:

http://www.moveon.org/unitednotdivided/

Equality in marriage is the civil rights issue of our generation. We can't let anyone, or any group, be singled out for discrimination based on who they are or who they love.

1. I did it already
and here is the note I attached.

My godfather is gay. I believe he was born gay and his sexuality is exactly what god intended it to be. His partner of 20 years is a wonderful man and I believe their union to be as holy and spiritual as any I have every seen. This amendment is immoral. Do not allow it to pass.

Don't know if anyone even reads the stuff I email them, but I feel better saying it.

I have been trying to call Dole's office, as well, but her phone has been busy for a long time this afternoon.

We are all in this together. Do not let them divide us. Take the high road and speak out against bigotry in all its forms.

4. I did it! Thanks for the reminder.
Not that it will do any good, considering the two sorry-ass senators from Mississippi. Maybe it will make them squirm a little bit!!!

6. I did it already.
I don't think Eliz. Dole will care what I think and it's too late to call her office here. I did sign the petition and send it in.

I hope it makes a difference. Frankly I can't believe this is even happening right now. Don't people have more burning issues than who their neighbor is marrying? Jeebus, People! Get a life!:wtf:

http://www.wevotevalues.com

they had a big national simulcast yesterday that churches could hook up to.....

Tune into the Battle for Marriage: Imminent Vote on Sunday evening July 11th. This 90 min. live simulcast rally will mobilize Christians across America to let their voice be heard on Capitol Hill regarding the Federal Marriage Amendment Senate vote. The vote is the week of July 12th, sooner than anyone expected! We’ll hear from Dr. James Dobson, Chuck Colson, Pastor Ken Hutcherson, Tony Perkins, & Dr. Adrian Rodgers. We will pray for the senators in each battleground state. Get ready to pick up your phone because WE ALL MUST CALL our senators and make sure they know where we stand on this issue. Tell all your friends because every Christian must participate in this effort or America will never be the same again.

EVEN IF YOU MISS THE EVENT - GET THE PRAYER STRATEGY

26. Thanks for this info....I may have to pay them a little visit.
I am a reformed fundie. I know the lingo. I know the mindset. This could be fun....

Every so often I do visit a conservative site or a fundie site and leave them a little message. It's nice to stay in touch you know? lol

Not only that but, like you, one can learn what the other side is doing and adjust our efforts appropriately.

They need a 2/3 vote in the Senate for it to go forward, and even the advocates know they don't have it.

The right wing crazies are pulling out all the stops to contact their Senators to get this divisive Federal Marriage Amendment passed. We need to let our Senators and Dubya know that we will not stand for this kind of bigotry.

We Democrats must stand up for our brothers and sisters who are under attack by George "I'm a uniter, not a divider" Bush.

22. It will never pass
The amendment proces simply requires too many states to pass an amendment to the constitution in order to pass. Like the Equal Rights Amendment. Just couldnt get the requisite states. The same thing will happen with this thing. THe real purpose is to get Kerry and Edwards to vote against it so Bush can pursuade the Radical Right to come out in numbers to prenvent and liberal from winning the election. It is hateful and divisive, but allowing Bush to focus and make this the major issue of the election will sideline any of the real issues of this election. The best thing would be for democrats to filibuster the thing, and so prevent the vote from occuring until after November.

Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 07:39 AM by flpoljunkie
Debate continues in the Senate today. The Republicans are now wanting votes on two separate amendments because of disagreements within their ranks on the wording of the initially proposed amendment.

After Democrats called them on it, the majority leader, Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, moved to cut off debate, and has scheduled a procedural vote for Wednesday. If that vote fails, which is likely, Republicans will be forced to drop the FMA amendment for now.

Stay tuned.
