I'm serious.
This is not a 'gotcha' thread, or a joke at all. I'm not trying to screw with anyone.
'I like Hillary Clinton'.
Why the hell would I say this now after heaping such scorn and derision upon her supporters all over DU? I'll leave you to answer that all on your own. But maybe it will help if you read along.
First, and it really has the least overall bearing on this subject, I am still a registered Republican. That will very likely change after November... even though I'm still not convinced I need to become a Democrat. For now, it's nice to be able to remind my Faux-News watching family that I'm 'one of them'. To the extent that I am a Republican encompasses what the party once upheld under Eisenhower, but those values have deteriorated into nothing over the decades since. Yes... I was originally against W.J.Clinton in '92, but he was brilliant, eloquent, and far more moderate than the media painted him. I knew this, so he had my support in '96. From there I watched the orgy of mindless right-wing hatchery (yes, I mean the word as is) in comparison to the relatively good job he was doing. I was pissed over his granting 'favored nation trading status' along with other, more liberal friends of mine. I was, at the time, equivocal on NAFTA. I suppose in retrospect I bought the "all boats rise with the tide" même the corporations were selling us. I thought a "stronger" North America would reduce immigration... not bad on paper, but foolish in practice. But I digress...
All in all, I was happy with W.J.C., and the corporate media proved to me during his time that it had a more aggressive agenda than he was willing to support. Yes, I know... the Telecommunications act. Let's not forget that not everything he signed appeared inherently evil at the time... or that he was a President that needed a little grease for his own agenda. But with the power the TC act gave the likes of Rupert Murdoch, all havoc broke loose.
Flashback to Hillary Rodham, Republican and 'Goldwater Girl'. Still at the crux between women's rights and traditional values of the Republican party at the time, just as the Democratic party was really getting it's wind as the 'equality party', she was where she needed to be when she had to be there. It can hardly be said that she knew at the time how much worse it could get. Nonetheless... she became a Democrat.
Now, I haven't looked into her reasons for doing so, but I'm sure that some HRC experts can illuminate the issue, as well I'm sure that some cynical BHO supporters might proffer... but let's ease off that latter if we can.
Nonetheless, she became a Democrat, and during her effective tenure as a Democrat, she racked up a pretty thorough liberal voting record. Again... cynicism aside, it is best to judge based on empirical evidence, not supposition. As a liberal representative of NY, she did her job.
Now for a little cynicism; I have very little doubt that she targeted NY in order to launch her aspirations for the presidency. I have no problem with that. She wouldn't be the first person in history that used an expedient approach to become a vessel for well-meaning public service. In fact, I applaud the move. If someone has the moxy to pull it off for the sake of the greater good, then God bless 'em.
The only problem I have with her is that the aspiration has obviously compromised the integrity. Again... I don't necessarily have a problem with that either. I see her as a woman who has set her sights on becoming the first woman President of the United States of America with the purpose of making that mean something. I truly believe that she has every intention of making America stronger. I'm certain that she will do far more good for the nation than any Republican would even pretend to think of dreaming of doing nowadays because history would cast a keener eye upon her... and she knows it.
She's no dumb chick.
That is why I like Hillary Clinton, and I believe she would make an excellent President of The United States.
She is, however, aligned with the DLC. In my last several years of research, I have concluded that the DLC is a little too friendly with the corporate interests that Dwight Eisenhower warned us about so many years ago. She has created associations that have become questionable of late... far moreso than whether her spiritual adviser ever said anything 'untoward' or 'controversial'. She has failed the test of honesty with regard to NAFTA, which she promoted at it's inception yet denied doing so lately, and with various other shady issues. More than that... her tactics, though understandable under consideration of her greatest aspiration being usurped by a 'newcomer', have certainly been harmful to her own party and to the overall viability of any Democratic candidate in November.
With all of that under consideration, plus all of the real research I've done on the candidates, their respective and allocentric opponents, I still like Hillary Clinton and the idea of her becoming President.
But after all of my deliberations, I have concluded to a certainty that;
"I like Barack Obama more".
When this nomination is all over, I just hope we can all come back to our senses. Reality has an 'open arms' policy I've been told, and I think maybe someone can convince me what party to join after November.
God Bless DU. God Bless America. And may the Flying Spaghetti Monster guide us all with his noodly appendage.
