Barack Obama has claimed that Jeremiah Wright has acknowledged that...
Edited on Fri May-02-08 07:50 AM by The Night Owl
...what he preached in those videos which made him infamous was offensive, innappropriate, and untrue. But after reading and hearing everything Wright has said recently, I get the impression that Wright does not regret anything he has said. The Jeremiah Wright I have seen in a recent interview and in public appearances does not seem anything like the Jeremiah Wright who Barack Obama described on The View...

Obama: Had the reverend not retired and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying there at the church.

So, what is going on here? Why is Obama's description of Wright's mental state so different from what we have seen of the guy recently?

1. BO is a political chameleon, he'll "change" his position to whatever seems appropriate at the moment
Apparently Rev. Wright is not so gifted or inclined.

2. *PLONK*
Plonk is a Usenet jargon term for adding a particular poster to one's kill file such that the poster's future postings are completely ignored. It was first used in 1989 and by 1994 was a commonly used term on Usenet regarding kill file additions.

The word is an example of onomatopoeia, intended to humorously represent the supposed sound<1> of the user hitting the kill file. It is also sometimes given as an acronym standing for Please Log Off, Net Kook, though this is likely a backronym. Other used expressions are "put lamer on killfile" <2> and Please Leave Our Newsgroup: Killfile!

It is also used as a verb: "I plonked that idiot Tom". As a public repudiation of the plonked poster, it is appended to the end of one's reply (or may constitute the entire reply).

The term's usage later expanded to include the use of e-mail filters that delete incoming messages that meet certain filter criteria set by the receiving user, so block messages from annoying senders. It has also often been figuratively used on BBSes, webboards, blogs, and wikis (which usually do not actually have filters).

12. Nowadays, it's "LALALALALA I can't heaaar you" and the jazzy DU "Ignore"
Which is usually preceded by a dramatic statement, "I'm putting YOU on IGNORE!" --- like it's a 'punishment' that you won't have to interact with a moronic, partisan tool anymore. Then, of course, the same people who ignore you often cannot BEAR being left out of the "fun," and will come back and talk about you, thusly: "Ewww, I can't see what IGNORED is saying, but I'll bet it's STOOPID!" or something along those grammar school lines!

Generally speaking, on DU, it's the refuge of the poor debater here, because this is a moderated forum, with rules.

But if you can't handle it, that IGNORE feature is your friend.

6. NORTHWESTERN University isn't feeling the Wright Stuff, either....
May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Northwestern University withdrew its offer to give the Reverend Jeremiah Wright an honorary degree at this year's commencement because of the controversy over past sermons by the former pastor to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The honor was withdrawn in March after recorded excerpts of Wright sermons, denouncing the U.S. government and suggesting its policies were to blame for the Sept. 11 attacks, began circulating on the Internet and were broadcast on television.

In a statement released today, Northwestern spokesman Alan Cubbage said the university in the Chicago suburb of Evanston was concerned that the furor over Wright would disrupt the June commencement ceremonies.

``In light of the controversy around Dr. Wright and to ensure the celebratory character of commencement not be affected, the university has withdrawn its invitation to Dr. Wright,'' Cubbage said.

The videos of Wright's sermons have been used by the Republican Party in North Carolina against Democratic candidates. In March, Obama condemned Wright's statements as ``profoundly distorted,'' though he said he wouldn't ``disown'' the man who had been his pastor for 20 years.

Renewed Controversy

Wright reignited the controversy with an address April 28 at the National Press Club in Washington in which he said he still believes the government is capable of spreading AIDS in the black community and that the Sept. 11 attacks were a reaction to U.S. policies. ......

23. I read somewhere that Wright got carried away the other day
And did not intend to come across the way he did. So he might have privately expressed regret to Obama but then gotten defensive at the National Press Club.

Edited on Fri May-02-08 08:41 AM by The Night Owl
In an interview that aired Friday on ABC's "The View" -- excerpts of which aired on CNN on Thursday night -- Obama talks about Wright's reaction to the controversy.

"Had the reverend not retired and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying there at the church," the senator said.

Get it? Barack Obama said that had Jeremiah Wright not acknowledged that what he said was offensive, inappropriate, and untrue that he would have left TUCC. In other words, Obama is claiming that Wright expressed regret about what he said. The problem is that the Wright we have all seen recently does not seem to regret anything he has said. Please explain this to me.

17. I read/heard it differently.
That in order for Obama to stay in the church, Wright would have either had to retire (which he did) or publicly apologize for what he had said (if he were to stay Obama's pastor).

After all, what use would a personal apology to Obama had been? Obama was referencing a public apology there.
