8. SHHH!!!. Microsoft's sofware and O/S have given me a good living |
|
As long as MS keeps making subpar OSes and software, I STILL have a way to make a living, patching and fixing their mistakes, and getting paid good money to do so.
Go Unix? Are you NUTS? The last thing tech support weenies need is a stable, rock-solid OS that NEVER needs to be repaired. That puts us out of bidness.
GO MS!!!
:D

28. Back when I was at Apple ( 7 years ) |
|
We always looked at Windows as "job security " for the IT peeps. I loved it when an IT person would so complicate his routines and system operations that only he fully understood it.
At one time NT had 7 million lines of code - and Microsoft is still great ad defending weak products.
It was kind of like a techno priest hood. You have to admire them - its a fine racket / monopoly.

7. Macs suck. Go Amiga!!!! |
|
(the above comment is meant as a joke. Everybody knows that the only people who use Amigas nowdays are mouth-breathing, live-in-moms-basement, no-life having, greasy-haired geeks who have nothing better to do than look down their noses as normal people.)

Amigas had some strong points but as usual commodore made great machines and then did not support them. When all three 68K machines were on the market, Byte ranked them all and Amiga got the best rating, by far, and it had a lot goinmg for it. A lot of TV graphic stuff at thetime was developed on Amigas, and even two years ago, the Local Comcast station in my areas was using Amigas to generate the TV Guide Channel. (Every once and a while they would have problems and the code would come up with Amiga Dos Messages)
The Atari was one of the best midi machines at the time. The 68K series of Chips always ran rings around 80xx chips becaseu the machine code was som much more elegant and simpler. Which is why almost every program wrutten for PC's that were ported over to Macs were half the size. I am thinking of getting a Mac again, as I only se my damned computer to go online, and write articles, short stories, poetry, and email. I done have much use for computers anymore except for the odd internet access, and as a typewriter with a memory. An old original IMAC would suit me fine.

confession: I first learned how to program on a modem-connected mainframe, one line at a time, at a teletype terminal. Then, the Apple IIs made it to my school (late 70s), and I coded a mean GOTO loop in BASIC. Unfortunately, as a child of a single mother, the $2000+ pricetag of the Apple was beyond our reach.
The first computer I owned was a Timex Sinclair 1000, which retailed for $200. I also got the 'extra' 4K RAM module for another $100, bringing the machine up to a whopping 8k RAM-- which in the early 80s was nothing to sneeze at, especially for a sub-$500 machine.
Later on, we got one of the first IBM PCs released, as my mom is an IBM "lifer" (30 years this fall) and we got the employee discount. Finally, a machine that used 5 1/4" floppies instead of a cassette player for storage....EGAD! A couple years later, we got my grandfather a PC jr. with the memory cartridges-- a computer that he still used up until a few years ago, when he could no longer remember how to use it (Alsheimer's).
Nowdays for me, it's a collection of WinBlows and Unix/Linux boxen, and a borrowed iMac for compatablity-checking web apps. Yeah, Windows isn't the greatest, but it's widespread, and you won't go broke writing software for it-- or doing tech support to fix it when it goes bad! :D

This rant brings me back to key punching FORTRAN cards late into the night and mainframe 'puters. Kinda reminds me of the teletype/small crt/ fresnel lens in a stick technlolguy in the movie Brazil. Ever see it ? That is kind of how I see windows.....

33. Brazil One of the BEST movies ever! |

and by a former Python, no less! Glad I'm not Mr Buttle is all I have to say! Windows is about the same, too. Of course NT/2K/XP is tons better than the old DOS-based kernel, but that's because they had to steal Dave Cutler (the guy who created VMS) from Digital to do it!
My mom's first job at IBM was as a keypunch operator back in 1974. I remember going into work with her on a Saturday and watching what she did. Since I was only 5 at the time, it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Maybe I should have paid closer attention-- I could be making piles more money!
Although I didn't actively pursue computer science in college (I was a PoliSci major), I still kept busy with computers one way or the other. I had several friends who had accounts on the VAX in the math dept (late 80s, pre-web) and used to go online with them. I was also an editor on the school newspaper, too, and we went over to Macs my junior year after our ancient IBM film-based typesetter caught fire during out last issue of the year.
I suppose if I could have my perfect OS, it would have to resemble good old BeOS. It was easy to use, visually appealing, and very powerful, and ran on cheap Wintel boxen. Since it had no legacy code, it was also quite elegant and written from the ground up to be object-oriented. I still have a machine that dual-boots BeOS 4.5 and Win98, and BeOS keeps running like a charm.
