Anti-tax proponent offers to help Nader in Oregon; Camejo compares Democrats to dictators

(07-13) 18:58 PDT SALEM, Ore. (AP) --

The leader of a Republican-leaning anti-tax group says his organization is ready to collect petition signatures to help Ralph Nader win a spot on Oregon's presidential ballot.

Democrats are challenging Nader's efforts to appear on ballots in some states. In San Francisco on Tuesday, his running mate, Peter Camejo, compared the Democratic Party to "a dictator" who uses fear and false rhetoric to give voters the illusion they have an open electoral system.

Drawing votes away from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry to help President Bush win Oregon is a goal of Citizens for a Sound Economy, said its leader, Russ Walker. The group was instrumental in putting together the signature drive and campaign that led to the drubbing of the state's $800 million tax hike in a Feb. 3 special election.

The offer could be a boost to Nader, who has struggled to meet an Aug. 24 deadline to qualify for the Oregon ballot.

1. damn, having Camejo on Nader's ticket changes the calculus...
...for this Californian. Peter Camejo is awesome-- I'd really hoped he would get the Green Party nod. As much as I respect Nader's message, I'd pretty much written him off for this election and planned to vote for Cobb. However, I have TREMENDOUS respect for Peter Camejo. I'll bet this will shake up a lot of Californian GP stalwarts.

Probably not the blanket condemnation you were looking for.... Camejo rocks.

3. Camejo defended Latinos like no Democrat ever does in the Gov race
He showed that Latinos pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than whites do and had the state data to back it up.

Logical really as the tax system in California is regressive. Poor pay 10% and after a certain amount it falls to 7% . Camejo is the only guy on tv I honestly ever saw who showed that if the wealthy paid the same rate as the poor then the big media story (and justification for the historic recall)of the $38 billion deficit would have been a small surpluss.

Democrats were so out of touch they never could even have the ability to point that out (the fiscal thingy). As for the latino bashing , I can tell you Latinos get bashed to death on conservative sites as bums who drain our budgets . If only Democrats defended them with facts like Camejo.

JUST A HINT................pssssssss...TOP SECRET INFORMATION to those who want to win ultra conservative states. Alabama has the most regressive tax system in the nation. Wealthy pay just 3% in income taxes while the poor pay just 11%. Any Democrats want to reach out to conservatives?????? Want to bring in new voters?????? HINT HINT HINT tax fairness.

5. Aren't you forgetting Alabamans voted last year to keep their system?
the GOP governor has been crippled for pushing for tax reform while the Moral Majority defended the current system!

True
Gov. Bob Riley is a hero. And Republicans here were stunned when he told them it was their Christian duty to help those less fortunate than them.

He will likely face a primary opponent in 2006. Possibly Roy Moore.

Gold help us.

9. Those poor folks of all ethnicitys were bambozeled for sure.
But some points.

A. the reform wasnt even massive
B. (much more important thn point A)the media and corperate propaganda on those backwoods poverty striken folk was an overwhelming white wash of the current system and smear of the reform that ont work if we fight endlessly to expose the truth

C. (even more important than point B)It must tell you something about Democrats if it takes a right wing GOP radical congresscritters from the mid 90s to inally propose reform 9however modest).

Anyway just keep telling those poor people that it isnt THEIR taxes that are going to be raised, thats solution # 1 . Heck by the time w get to solution number 99 maybe #100 will come along and it will be national Democrats reconizing that we have REGRESSIVE taxation and then #101 will be them proposing to change it

6. Indeed
Alabama's tax system is fucked up. We have the oldest, most ridiculous state constitution in the nation. Out-of-state corporations hold huge tracts of land and pay almost nothing in property taxes.

But worst of all, we pay the highest liquor taxes in the nation.

8. Camejo is a flacid race-baiting has-been
I was in CA during the Gov race and tried to have an open mind toward Camejo. He showed his true colors as a race-baiting opportunist as well was a willing apparachik for a lot of the flaky Greenie ideas

Cobb is even worse. The Greens will get nowhere with these dull blades.

13. I voted for Camejo in Calif. but I'm disappointed he is
taking the side of Nader during such a critical time. I agree with Nader's ideals but Nader himself doesn't seem to get that we are ALREADY in a dick tatorship with that fascist pig Bush and we need to get BUSH out before we can do any good at all. For that, I cannot give Nader or Camejo anymore respect.

I hope someone with some sense will pick up where Nader left off and give some respect to the message in the future. I may be changing parties next time around. However, because of Nader's complete bullheaded attitude, I will NEVER vote in any party that he or Camejo has a hand in. Very sad.

4. Camejo is more of a whore than Nader is
I remember when that liar went all over California urging the recall of Davis and saying Arnold would be a better governor.

I'm thinking of kids that Arnold kicked off of Medicaid and the several who died thanks to Camejo!

10. Camejo has the courage to speak truth to power...
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 11:38 PM by mike_c
...and he ALWAYS has the facts to back it up. Not just catchy slogans, and not just pandering to the least common denominator. Peter Camejo walks the walk and works for the people. I'll take that kind of "whore" anyday!

on edit: You called Camejo a "liar." Other than your emotional and undocumented assertions, can you provide any examples of lies he's told (and the truth, if he's lied)? I think you're just blowing smoke. Personally, I doubt that you've ever really listened to him-- kind of like all those repigs who condemned F-9/11 but didn't have to see it to just know it was full of lies.... Pony up, if you've got 'em. I think Camejo is one of the most honest politicians I've ever witnessed.
