New Kerry ads aim to boost black voter turnout

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat John Kerry initiated a $2 million ad campaign aimed at black voters Wednesday, encouraging them to turn out to vote for the candidate because his plans on jobs, health care and education could have a direct impact on their lives.

The campaign, much of it targeted to black-owned media, includes print, radio and television ads. The ads will run in battleground states as well as major cities in other states.

Alexis Herman, Kerry campaign co-chair and former labor secretary, said the efforts to engage black voters are starting earlier in a campaign than any election year she can remember.

"This is a conversation that must start now," Herman said.

1. Alexis Herman is an energetic campaigner and effective speaker. She'll
most likely find a spot in the Kerry cabinet.

4. Very important
Kerry doesn't give the impression he isn't taking the black community's vote for granted.

Kerry, and Edwards as well (I think he can connect better with working class people of all races), have to get out to black churches and campaign in urban areas well. The African American community is a big part of the vote in several of the swing states, and is especially important in southern swing states.
