Jenna Bush To Learn Firsthand What An Unfunded Mandate Is
HUEYTOWN, Ala. - It took a group of second-graders to elicit from Jenna Bush something the first family doesn't often discuss publicly — specifics on her future career.

Seated beside first lady Laura Bush in a classroom Wednesday, the 22-year-old college graduate laughed when it was their turn to read aloud with students at Hueytown Elementary School. She got through the exercise and asked a question relevant for the moment.

"What grade is this?" said Jenna, who plans to teach this fall.

"Second grade," eight 7-year-olds said in unison.

"I'm going to teach fourth grade," Jenna said.

Later, she introduced her mother on a bigger stage — a private, $500-per-person luncheon that raised $500,000 for Republican candidates nationwide. For $5,000, donors could have their photo with Mrs. Bush.

If Jenna's gonna teach public school, she's in for a treat - to see in human terms what her father's policies represent.

Ps - Kudos to Jenna for picking a great career!

5. Wondered that m'self...
... and I don't know what to think. Bush's kids aren't Bush, and if they're doing the campaign thing for Dad and have no intention to pursue these careers after election, it will become apparent then. Now, no one knows.

If they aspire to more than entry-level teaching or HGO work, they'll quickly drop out and find rich husbands. If they have some sense of purpose, they'll stick with it and will probably do reasonably well at their chosen tasks in life. They both have good educations, and it's their choice to use what they've learned, or not.

11. Walking, Standing, Smiling
"So far, Jenna and Barbara Bush's days on the campaign trail seem to consist of walking and standing and smiling for the cameras and for the crowds.
-- Judy Woodruff, CNN, July 14, 2004

Interesting contrast to the Kerry daughters who are out speaking about policy and programs. I wonder if Bush plans to let his college-educated daughters do more than stand around and look pretty.

13. They Don't Seem Overly Interested In Politics
Just being good, supportive daughters. If they say something dumb-ass, I'll be the first to give them hell, but I can't find too much fault as yet.

As for the Kerry (and Edwards) family, they are truly exceptional and give credit to all those years when Kerry spent every weekend in Boston with them, rather than schmoozing in D.C. for political gain.

"My sister and I did play sports and my father was remarkably dedicated. He was at a lot of our games. It was really funny 'cause we would look up in the middle of our game and we'd see this man in you know a huge jacket, it'd be sort of the end of fall and he was in a huge jacket and a bright orange hunting cap and we would realize you know that 6'4 guy was our dad and we you know at the game, the game would end, and he'd sort of come running out with his arms out for a huge hug and we sort of bypass until he took the orange hat off." - Vanessa Kerry.
