History Buffs: How close to the election has the candidate for VP been
changed - either by death or being dropped from the ticket? I was wondering because of the chatter about Chaney (sp)

1. Sometimes VPs have been changed at the convention
A few examples that come to mind:
Gerald Ford dropped Rockefeller for Dole in 1976.
FDR dropped Garner for Wallace in 1940, and Wallace for Truman in 1944.
Lincoln dropped Hamlin for Johnson in 1864 as part of the "National Union" Ticket; Johnson was a War Democrat.

The only time I can think of a VP candidate being replaced after the convention was in 1972 when Eagleton withdrew a couple of weeks after the Dem Convention and was replaced by Sargent Shriver.

4. Ford didn't drop Rocky at the convention.
Rocky had said in advance he would not run in '76.

2. Well, VP Henry Wallace was essentially dumped

at the convention in 1944 by FDR in favor of Truman.

3. McGovern had to dump Eagleton in late July
in '72. He grabbed Sargent Shriver and they got slaughtered by Nixon/Agnew but Nixon was cheating.

5. Shriver
is the correct answer, I believe. But the S.S. McGovern had long since sailed.

6. In 1912 President Taft's VP died in late October
a replacement was certified by the Republican Party.
