Outlook not looking good for Obama in NJ
Edited on Sat May-03-08 12:05 PM by brentspeak
Example: This morning, I was on line at a local United Methodist Church rummage sale, and some of the people in front of me were discussing Obama. One guy was saying positive things about him (Harvard Law Review president, etc.), but he and some other people believed that the Rev. Wright thing alone could sink him. All agreed that had Rev. Wright been in the public eye back in December or January, Obama would not have won Iowa, and would never have made it this far (that's my opinion, as well.)

These were just average NJ citizens I'm talking about; but their comments seem to be par for the course on the subject of Obama.

1. Last evening I was waiting in line at a church rummage sale in Vermont
and a guy says to me, "So you're probably supporting Hillary, right?" (Old, white and female.) I gave him a dirty look and said, "Not bloody likely." He started to laugh and said, "Phew. That's good to hear. O-Bam-a!" Everyone there supported Obama.

Are you that cut off from life that anything outside the box is not to be seen or heard? There are opinions going on out there, and it is important to find out what people are saying about both candidates... I don't have a candidate, but I am sifting through the threads to find out as much as I can about both of them.. I will support and vote for the winner, it's that simple...

So they are letting the corporate media whores tell them how to think and what to believe. Letting Wright and the 24/7 talking points define the man....

Did you refer them to DU? :)

We may be fighting like hell at the moment, but at least this place is populated by folks who don't do what the MSM tells them to do.

Hopefully, by Wednesday Obama will have won 3 straight contests and this crazy dance will be over.

15. I have heard all kinds of opinions on Obama here
Edited on Sat May-03-08 12:16 PM by brentspeak
While I do see a lot of Obama bumper-stickers, and, sometimes, people wearing Obama buttons, I've also heard some wacked-out opinions concerning him. The most prominent was a couple of months ago at a local library, where some woman insisted that Obama was Muslim. The guy she was talking with, an obvious Obama supporter, tried to tell her that the Muslim thing was just an email rumor, but she wasn't convinced.

The problem is there just might be enough of those Sean Hannity-listening fools to tip an election.

Edited on Sat May-03-08 03:42 PM by Beacool
do not consider for a minute that our upscale neighborhood (home of both Governor Corzine and Senator Menendez), represents the average person in NJ.

I should know since I volunteered for months in the Hillary campaign in Hudson County and the only town we lost was Jersey City due to the demographics, and even there we lost by a hair. BTW, Hillary won Hoboken.

62. Well, friend,
let's call Hoboken a mixed demographic. True, the influx of well-off folk, condo-ization of our town and the soaring home prices have tipped the balance in favor of the upper income strata, but there are plenty of middle class folk trying to stay here and those on the lower end of the scale as well. My daughter attends Wallace, and the diversity of her peers illustrates that. Hudson Tea Building occupants, like Corzine, are not representative of the "average" person here- even the tea Building seems to be having trouble selling in this climate. (I visited a friend there yesterday and she was telling me management was offering all sorts of incentives to attract buyers- who would've thunk it. Well, all I can say is: thank G-d we moved here before the big real estate boom because we couldn't afford it now!

Anyway, Hoboken is a solid Democratic town and will turn out for whomever the nominee is. (You may know a neighbor, Mike, who works at City Hall and is politically active- he is close to Menendez, worked for him when he was a local politician).

Whereabouts are you, in Hoboken? Anyway, we support different candidates, but it's nice to know there are DUers in my town! :)

13. There's a difference between being worried about the Wright issue
and actually buying into it and being scared out of voting for Obama. A few of my relatives, strong Obama supporters, had the same concern, but their support of him is unshaken.

The "weren't ever going to vote for him anyway crowd" will grab onto Wright and use it as yet another excuse. Reasonable people who know what he's about, especially compared to Clinton, will see through the spin.

27. Ha! April 30th poll of NJ voter preferences, Obama vs. Clinton
http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080430/NEWS/804300402

New Jersey voters are proving as fickle as the April weather.

Only two months after handing U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton a healthy 10-point presidential primary win over Sen. Barack Obama, the state's Democratic voters now say they prefer Obama for president by the same margin, a new Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll found.

And in a head-to-head contest, John McCain — the presumptive Republican presidential nominee — would lose to either Democrat if the election were held today. The poll found that Obama would defeat McCain by 24 percentage points, while Clinton's vic-tory margin would be 14 points.

So what's happened since the Feb. 5 Democratic primary, when Clinton beat Obama 55 to 45 percent?

"New Jersey Democrats see that Obama has the (nationwide) lead, and they feel he should win the nomination," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. "Democrats want to see the party united. They feel that if this (contest) goes on, it will hurt the party."

The poll results showed that nearly 40 percent of Democrats said the continuing battle between Obama and Clinton will damage the party's chances in the November general election.

But Obama should define himself better than just saying the word "change" every other minute.

The other day, when I tried to convince a semi-Freeper-ish friend of mine -- who I persuaded a couple of years ago to finally see Bush for what he is -- to support Obama, I found myself unable to articulate clearly just why he would be better than McCain. All I could come up with were, "Uh, McCain wants to keep us in Iraq; he's the same as Bush".

32. Recent NJ poll showed Obama trouncing McCain
By a bigger margin than Hillary. Reverend Wright already surfaced once, so I can't for the life of me understand why it's hurting him again in the polls. I feel like people who were not going to vote for him because of it already jumped ship. It's so frustrating to see him getting hurt for something someone else did and said. None of the other candidates has been tarred with guilt by association the way he has.

Hilly took Calif in the primary ~~ however, if we voted today, her numbers would be in the toilet...along with her campaign and her truthfulness.

Poll finds Obama surges past Clinton in NJ
by The Star-Ledger Continuous News Desk
Wednesday April 30, 2008, 5:37 AM

Only two months after U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton scored 10-point presidential primary win in New Jersey vs. Sen. Barack Obama, the state's Democratic voters now say they prefer Obama for president by the same margin, a Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll found, according to a report in the Asbury Park Press.

The report said in a head-to-head contest, John McCain -- the presumptive Republican presidential nominee -- would lose to either Democrat if the election were held today. The poll found that Obama would defeat McCain by 24 percentage points, while Clinton's victory margin would be 14 points.

"New Jersey Democrats see that Obama has the (nationwide) lead, and they feel he should win the nomination," Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute told the newspaper. "Democrats want to see the party united. They feel that if this (contest) goes on, it will hurt the party."

This is closer to what I hear - there are many Clinton voters who are horrified at some of the nastier Clinton moves. They like Obama more. PS I am active with my towns Democrats - though we are a minority, they are REALLY hoping its Obama because they have for the first time got the teens in the HS and young adults in the County College involved and they are excited.

PS Monmouth University polling institute is one of the more decent ones - Eagleton out of Rutgers is the only one I've heard of that is more respected.

The corporate media did as well, yet the candidate received kid glove treatment (in fact- he had by far the most positive media coverage of any candidate from either side) throughout 2007 and early 2008.

Why was that, do you suppose?

60. NJ shifting to Obama in a big way - posted last night on DU
Ever hear of 'google'? Before you post something sweeping about a candidate's performance in the entire state why not check around and get oh a fact or two?

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newjersey/ny-bc-nj--presidentialpoll-0430apr30,0,5458012.story

Maybe the stupidest post of the week

TRENTON, N.J. - Support among New Jersey Democrats in the presidential race appears to be shifting to Barack Obama.

A Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll finds 45 percent of the Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents surveyed would like to see Obama get the party's nomination compared to 38 percent for Hillary Clinton.

Clinton beat Obama in the state's Democratic primary in February by a 10-point margin.

Nearly 40 percent of the Democrats polled say the continuing battle between the presidential candidates will damage the party's chances in November.

The survey shows Republican John McCain would lose to either Democrat in the Garden State.

The telephone survey of 803 adults was conducted between April 24-28 and has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

61. "some people" will not vote for him..just as "some people" will not vote for her and
"some people" will not vote for grandpa..

"some people" will always say things..and "some people" will always report what "some people" said, and how they are "worried" about the effect that "some people" may have on an election..

"some people" yawn, and fart in their general direction
